Raising The framework was put together by Gisborne Scaffolding and was placed on the house so Pete Claffey and his Character Roofing team can remove an old roof and put on a new tin roof. “It probably took an hour to lift the whole the roof thing up,” Mr Claffey said. The frame would be “shrink-wrapped” later today to make it watertight. “It will take probably a month to do the re-roof so we can’t leave it exposed to the weather.” The operation works in reverse when the roof is ready. “We just unwrap it and crane it back down. Three dead after boat capsizes SAN DIEGO — Three people were killed and more than two dozen others were hospitalised after a wooden boat capsized during a possible human smuggling operation just off the San Diego coast, authorities said. Local lifeguards, the US Coast Guard and other agencies responded around 10.30am yesterday (local time) following reports of an overturned vessel near the peninsula of Point Loma, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. Three people died at the scene and 27 people were transported to hospitals with “varying degrees of injuries”, department spokesman Jose Ysea said. Ysea said when he arrived on scene near the Cabrillo National Monument there was a “large debris field” of broken wood and other items in the choppy waters. “In that area of Point Loma it’s very rocky. It’s likely the waves just kept pounding the boat, breaking it apart,” Ysea said. He said it was possible, but not confirmed, that the group had been packed in a low-slung panga boat, a type of motorised vessel often made of wood used by smugglers to bring people illegally into the US from Mexico. — AP ‘ENOUGH IS ENOUGH’: India on Saturday set yet another daily global record with 401,993 cases but numbers dropped slightly yesterday, with 392,488 cases recorded, taking its tally to more than 19.5 million. NETBALL by Murray Robertson WAIKOHU produced the boil-over result of the season to date in premier-grade netball when they downed defending champions YMP in emphatic style at Victoria Domain on Saturday. Claydens Waikohu (1) led throughout and steadily built on their lead to win 39-31. At the 10-minute mark they led 11-8, then 23-15 at halftime and 30-24 at the 30-minute mark in the Pak’nSave competition match. “It was a close contest between the top-of-the-table leaders and Waikohu were very pleased to take the win,” netball commentator Sherill Beale said. “Both coaches made changes, but Waikohu took a lead they never relinquished. “Their goal defenders Ruby Tuapawa and Karyn Matahia worked together well and pressured YMP Sunshine Brewery’s shooters at every opportunity and created turnovers,” Beale said. “At the other end, their shooters Missy Ruru and Arihia Ruru kept calm and moved around the goal circle well as they faced several different YMP defenders.” It was YMP’s first loss of the season. Waikohu coaching duo Cheryl Te Rito and Sharni Wainohu were thrilled, and proud of their players. They said they had set the bar now for the team, and were going to “work their butts off” to stay there. Waikohu and Whangara Old Girls (1) sit at the top of the table with four wins from four games. Whangara won twice on Saturday. In their first match they defeated F45 High School Old Girls 28-23. It was tied 5-5 at the end of the first quarter. Whangara led 11-10 at half time but it was all square again at three-quarter time, 17-all. “It was a very close game with Whangara just pulling away in the dying minutes,” Beale said. “Both teams played speedy netball with all players contributing on attack and defence. “Whangara’s Tania Adamson (nee Hill) led the defence charge and secured many intercepts TOO STRONG: Whangara Old Girls took out both their matches on Saturday, first against High School Old Girls, and then scoring a and tips but was ably backed up strong win against Ritana Senior A later in the day.
