    Women and climate change – Mehreen Faruqi The theme for this morning “women and climate change’ combines two areas that I am adamant about making a change in – gender inequality and inaction on climate change. Unfortunately, in both areas we are disappointingly moving backwards in NSW and Australia, and I’d like to highlight some of these issues separately before looking into the interconnection between climate change and women. I grew up in Pakistan, a country that ranks 135 out of 136 in the global gender gap. So from an early age I was acutely aware of the inequality and discrimination that exists in law as well as societal norms which actually prevents women from access to education, work opportunities or fully participating in decision- making. Living in Pakistan, I always imagined prosperous countries like Australia having achieved gender equality in all spheres of life. So I was surprised when I arrived in Sydney 22 years ago and started my postgraduate studies in engineering, only to discover there was only one female academic amongst a fifty odd male teachers in the school of civil and environmental engineering at my university. Of course, judging gender equality is much more sophisticated than just measuring numbers in one particular institution and profession, but it is a good indicator of existing marginalisation. There is no doubt that much has been achieved through the successive waves of feminism over the last century. We’ve fought hard and won many battles - the right to vote and to run for parliament, to join the workforce and pursue careers in all professions.

    OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT OBAMA FROM U.S. ORGANIZATIONS Mr. President: It’s time to move from talk to action on nuclear disarmament. April 28, 2014 Dear President Obama, During the closing session of the Nuclear Security Summit in The Hague on March 25, 2014, you cited a number of concrete measures to secure highly-enriched uranium and plutonium and strengthen the nuclear nonproliferation regime that have been implemented as a result of the three Nuclear Security Summits, concluding: “So what’s been valuable about this summit is that it has not just been talk, it’s been action.” Would that you would apply the same standard to nuclear disarmament! On April 5, 2009 in Prague, you gave millions of people around the world new hope when you declared: “So today, I state clearly and with conviction America’s commitment to seek the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons.” Bolstered by that hope, over the past three years, there has been a new round of nuclear disarmament initiatives by governments not possessing nuclear weapons, both within and outside the United Nations. Yet the United States has been notably “missing in action” at best, and dismissive or obstructive at worst. This conflict may come to a head at the 2015 Review of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT). We write now, on the eve of the third Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) meeting for the 2015 Review Conference of the NPT, which will take place at UN headquarters in New York April 28 – May 9, 2014, to underscore our plea that your administration shed its negative attitude and participate constructively in deliberations and negotiations regarding the creation of a multilateral process to achieve a nuclear weapons free world.

    European Parliament Delegation for relations with Australia and New Zealand (DANZ) visit Auckland and Wellington 23-26 February 2020 Report on the European Parliament’s Delegation for relations with Australia and New Zealand (DANZ) visit 23-26 February 2020 Background The European Parliament’s Delegation for relations with Australia and New Zealand (DANZ) and the New Zealand Parliament have regular exchange meetings. This year it was the turn of DANZ to visit New Zealand for the 24th Inter-parliamentary meeting. As the visit was on a non-sitting week for the New Zealand Parliament, this meeting was held in Auckland to enable easier attendance for New Zealand parliamentarians. This was followed by meetings in Wellington, including with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, three New Zealand Cabinet Ministers and the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. DANZ’s visit this year was comprised of a larger delegation than usual. Eight members of the European Parliament (MEPs) came to New Zealand, including a Vice President. The members were from five of the six main political groups in the European Parliament – the European People's Party (Christian Democrats), the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, Renew Europe, the Greens/European Free Alliance and the European Conservatives and Reformists. 1 The DANZ visit was led by Chairperson, Ulrike Müller MEP, who also led the previous delegation to New Zealand in 2018.2 Inter-parliamentary meeting The 2020 meeting was held on Monday 24th February. The New Zealand Members of Parliament who attended are listed at the end of this report.

The Aussies let Kiwis enter without quarantine, then quickly and defi nitively shut us off at the fi rst sniff of Covid, as they have done now with the latest outbreak. They do the same thing domestically. Look at Victoria. Cut off from the rest of Australia. But you can still travel Sydney to Brisbane return with no quarantine.
