Please allow me to thank you and your staff for all your efforts to advance the cause of human rights and democracy in Iran. It is also a great pleasure to be here with Rudi Bakhtiar and Kambiz Hosseini. They are leaders in how we communicate the human rights issue, both to Iran and to the rest of the world. Freedom House is celebrating its 70th anniversary. We were founded on the eve of the United States‟ entry into World War II by Eleanor Roosevelt and Wendell Wilkie to act as an ideological counterweight to the Nazi‟s anti-democratic ideology. The Nazi headquarters in Munich was known as the Braunes Haus, so Roosevelt and Wilkie founded Freedom House in response. The ruins of the Braunes Haus are now a memorial. Freedom House is actively promoting democracy and freedom around the world. The Second World War context of our foundation is relevant to our Iran work. The Iranian state despises liberal democracy, routinely violates human rights norms through its domestic repression, mocks and denies the Holocaust. Given the threat that the Iranian state poses to its own population and to the Middle East, we regard Iran as an institutional priority. In addition to Freedom House‟s well-known analyses on the state of freedom in the world and our advocacy for democracy, we support democratic activists in some of the world‟s most repressive societies, including Iran.

The project area is the Peninsula of Devon and Cornwall, two neighbouring counties in the South West of England with a combined population of 1,664,500, 1,135,000 in Devon and 529,500 in Cornwall. Both counties have a rural element, a strong maritime heritage, are tourist regions and important retirement locations. The Peninsula area embraces numerous heritage sites, national parks and some of the nation’s finest tourist sites, notably the internationally renowned Eden Project. Devon and Cornwall share significant common features and have similar challenges and ambitions. It complements Research Paper 11/46 prepared for the Commons Second Reading. Report Stage and Third Reading are scheduled for 5 September 2011. Significant areas of debate at Committee Stage included: the lack of a legal definition for overnight residence requirements that could be imposed on suspects; the fact that the Home Secretary would no longer be able to geographically relocate terror suspects; proposals to allow suspects access to a mobile phone and computer. Some Members expressed a particular worry about the inability to renew measures imposed on suspects after two years, unless there was evidence of new terrorism-related activity. Only a small series of Government amendments, which were mostly described as drafting or technical amendments, were made in Committee.     Rt Hon Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister Hon Kris Faafoi Hon Stuart Nash Hon Grant Robertson Hon Simon Bridges Hon Paul Goldsmith Hon Todd McClay Parliament Building Wellington, 6160 16 April 2020 Dear Prime Minister, Government Ministers and Opposition Members of Parliament COVID-19 effect on small business leases – call for urgent action to be taken to prevent business closures We refer to our previous letter to each of you dated 2 April 2020. In our letter we wrote: a) calling for urgent action to be taken to prevent business closures; and b) we implored you to address the critical issue of rent relief to all tenants of commercial leases – as many leases do not provide any rent relief. We have had no response from government or the Ministry for Business, Innovation & Employment to our letter and our views do not appear to have been considered in the recent package that was announced yesterday to supposedly assist small to medium-sized businesses. We find this very disappointing. As we said in our letter, we are the peak body representing franchising in NZ. Turnover of the franchising sector represents circa 11% of New Zealand’s GDP. As such franchising is a critical part of the New Zealand economy. And most of the circa 37,000 franchisees in NZ are small businesses – the very people that the government has said need more government support. In our letter we explained to you why rent relief is critical and why we believe urgent action needs to be taken to put cash in the hands of small to medium-sized business owners.
