Chelsea is pursuing a minor in Jewish Studies in addition to a major in International Affairs and a certificate in Digital Arts and Media. She first joined the Program in Jewish Studies because she wanted to incorporate genocide and religious studies into her broader major, and was specifically attracted to learning about gendered experiences within both the Holocaust and Judaism. We would like to congratulate Chelsea on recently being awarded the 2014 Jacob Van Ek S cholar Award! An outstanding student, this past year, Chelsea has also received the Wrenn Scholarship from the Boulder Chapter of the United Nations Association and the Ripple Award from the Dennis Small Cultural Center. During her time at CU, Chelsea has served as a member of the Jewish Studies Student Advisory Board, was the co-president of Hillel, played for CU's Women's Rugby team, served on CUSG and Student Outreach Retention Center for Equity (SORCE), and was on the KVCU Radio 1190 Task Force. Chelsea also works for the CU Recreation Center. This past summer 2013, Chelsea completed the CU in D.C. summer session, interning with Women's Action for New Directions and the Women Legislators' Lobby in Washington, DC. She worked particularly on women's advocacy and defense budget issues, as well as nuclear policies.

Gordon Fox Professor of History and Director, European Union Center of Excellence, University of Wisconsin, Madison Benjamin Franklin spent the American Revolution in Paris. He had helped to draft the Declaration of Independence in the summer of 1776, one of the most radical documents of the eighteenth century—sparking rebellion on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Serving as a representative for the Continental Congress in France during the next decade, Franklin became a celebrity. He was the enlightened idealist from the frontier, the man of principled action who enthralled onlookers in the rigid European class societies of the 1770s and ’80s. Franklin embodied the American critique of Old World society, economy, and diplomacy. He was one of many American revolutionaries to take aim at the degenerate world of powdered wigs, fancy uniforms, and silver-service dinners where the great men of Europe decided the fate of distant societies. Franklin was a representative of the enduring American urge to replace the diplomacy of aristocrats with the openness and freedom of democrats.1 Despite his radical criticisms of aristocracy, Franklin was also a prominent participant in Parisian salons. To the consternation of John Adams and John Jay, he dined most evenings with the most conservative elements of French high society. Unlike Adams, he did not refuse to dress the part. For all his frontiers- man claims, Franklin relished high-society silver-service meals, especially if generous portions of wine were available for the guests.

INTRODUCTION Self-censorship refers to the decision by an individual or group to refrain from speaking and to the decision by a media organization to refrain from publishing information. Whenever an individual or group or the media engages in self-censorship, the values of the First Amendment are compromised, because the public is denied information or ideas.' It should not be sur- prising, therefore, that the principles, doctrines, and precedents of what I refer to as "the law of the First Amendment"' are designed to prevent self-censorship premised on fear of govern- mental sanctions against expression. This fear-induced self-cen- sorship will here be called "self-censorship bad." At the same time, the First Amendment also values and pro- tects a right to silence.

    Prepared Testimony to the United States Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near Eastern and South and Central Asian Affairs May 11, 2011 HUMAN RIGHTS AND DEMOCRATIC REFORM IN IRAN Andrew Apostolou, Freedom House Chairman Casey, Ranking member Risch, Members of the Subcommittee, it is an honour to be invited to address you and to represent Freedom House. Please allow me to thank you and your staff for all your efforts to advance the cause of human rights and democracy in Iran. It is also a great pleasure to be here with Rudi Bakhtiar and Kambiz Hosseini. They are leaders in how we communicate the human rights issue, both to Iran and to the rest of the world. Freedom House is celebrating its 70th anniversary. We were founded on the eve of the United States‟ entry into World War II by Eleanor Roosevelt and Wendell Wilkie to act as an ideological counterweight to the Nazi‟s anti-democratic ideology. The Nazi headquarters in Munich was known as the Braunes Haus, so Roosevelt and Wilkie founded Freedom House in response. The ruins of the Braunes Haus are now a memorial. Freedom House is actively promoting democracy and freedom around the world. The Second World War context of our foundation is relevant to our Iran work. The Iranian state despises liberal democracy, routinely violates human rights norms through its domestic repression, mocks and denies the Holocaust. Given the threat that the Iranian state poses to its own population and to the Middle East, we regard Iran as an institutional priority. In addition to Freedom House‟s well-known analyses on the state of freedom in the world and our advocacy for democracy, we support democratic activists in some of the world‟s most repressive societies, including Iran.

    Mandatory Credit: Bloomberg Politics and the Media Panel: Bridging the Political Divide in the 2012 Elections Breakfast NORMAN PEARLSTINE, CHIEF CONTENT OFFICER, BLOOMBERG, LP: Thank you very much to all of you for coming this afternoon for this panel discussion and welcome to the Bloomberg Link. This is a project that a number of my colleagues have been working very hard on to - to get in shape having had a similar facility in Tampa last week. And as Al Hunt is fond of reminding me, eight years ago, Bloomberg was sharing space as far away from the perimeter and I guess any press could be. I think sharing that space with Al Jazeera -- About four years ago, we certainly had a press presence in Denver and St. Paul, but this year, we're a whole lot more active and a lot more aggressive and I think that reflects all the things that Bloomberg has been doing to increase its presence in Washington where, in the last two years through an acquisition and a start up, we've gone from a 145 journalists working at Bloomberg News to close to 2,000 employees and that reflects in large part the acquisition of BNA last September but also the start up of Bloomberg Government, a web based subscription service. And so over the next few days, we welcome you to come back to the Bloomberg Link for a number of events and hopefully, you'll get a chance to meet a number of my colleagues in the process. I'm very happy that we are able to start our activities in Charlotte with this panel discussion today, not only because of the subject matter, which is so important to journalism and to politics, but also because, quite selfishly, it's given me a chance to partner with Jeff Cowan and Center for Communication Leadership and Policy in Los Angeles at Annenberg USC, which Jeff, I was happy to be a co-chair of your board so, it's good to be able to - each of us to convince the other we ought to do this.
