It occu- pies an area of 1,165.85 km2 and has a po- pulation of over 70,000. It is one of 17 land counties of Pomorskie Voivodeship, borde- ring such counties as Starogard, Chojnice, Gdańsk, Kartuzy, and Bytów. It constitutes a local self-government community cre- ated by residents of the county and area that encompasses the town of Kościerzyna with history dating back almost 600 years (serving as a social, economic, cultural and administrative center, and the county seat) and the following townships: Dziemiany, Karsin, Kościerzyna, Liniewo, Lipusz, Nowa Karczma, and Stara Kiszewa. An interesting titbit is the fact that in Kościerzyna County, in Kościerzyna Township, in the village of Kłobuczyno, there is the center of Pomor- skie Voivodeship. Geologically, the area of Kościerzyna County features a borderland of terminal moraine and sandy outwash plains creating the Charzykowy Plain. The- se areas, due to their varied topography, contrasts of scenery created by the myriad of deeply cut glacial troughs and accompa- nying hills, are called “Kashubian Switzer- land.” For this reason this area can justi- fiably be ranked among the most beautiful and charming parts of the country. Most of the people living in the county have the same ethnic origin, deeply rooted in Kashu- bia and its traditions. 7 Gdynia Kartuzy Nowa Karczma Lipusz Dziemiany Stara Kiszewa Karsin 8 Description of the county and townships Kościerzyna County Kościerzyna County is one of the most attractive regions in Poland as far as nature and scenery are concerned.
