SGPR 12/04/2017 BM_33-2_INGL.indb 8 25/05/2018 14:45:24 PRESENTATION The renewal of religious life entails at the same time both the continual return to the sources of every form of Christian life and to the original spirit of the institutes, as well as their ad- aptation to the changed situations of the times (...). It is to the advantage of the Church that institutes have their own physi- ognomy and proper function. Thus the spirit and purpose of the founder should be faithfully interpreted and observed, as also the sound traditions, all of which constitute the patrimony of each institute (Perfectae caritatis, 2). Maintaining the char- acteristics of their institute, monks should renew their ancient and beneficial traditions and adapt them to the contemporary needs of people, so that monasteries are like nurseries for the edification of the Christian people (ibid., 9) In the wake of the indications of the second Vatican Ecu- menical Council, the Abbot General and the General Curia of the Benedictine Sylvestrine Congregation OSB organized a symposium on the occasion of the 750th anniversary of the death of their founder, St Sylvester Abbot of Osimo (1267-2017). The symposium, held from 1 to 3 June 2017 at the monastery of San Silvestro in Montefano near Fabriano, mother house of the Sylvestrine monastic family, represented the high point of the jubilee celebrations. The conferences, entrusted to Italian and overseas experts noted for their scientific and theological- spiritual profile, were able to deepen the figure and work of St Sylvester, through a re-reading of his charism (« return to the sources ») in the light of the epochal change of the third mil- lennium (« adaptation to the changed situations of the times »). Therefore it was not simply a case of an « examination of the past » but of a « spiritual evaluation based on the guiding prin- ciples of Vatican II », as was the hope of the organizers. Through the study of the sources referring to the person of the Founder, in particular the Vita Silvestri, the biography writ- ten a few years after the death of the saint, there was deepened BM_33-2_INGL.indb 9 25/05/2018 14:45:24 X PRESENTATION the experiential journey of his disciples down to our days. This illustrated the practical elements of the charism of St Sylvester for today’s multiethnic and multicultural society in the five con- tinents where Sylvestrine monks currently work (Europe, North America, Australia, Asia, Africa). There emerged from the symposium the perennial validity of the spiritual values of the Benedictine Rule, chosen by Sylvester for his monastic family in a period when there were flourishing the two new movements of the Franciscans and Dominicans. In fact, beyond the contingent elements tied to the situation of the times, the values of the monastic tradition remain unchanged: the search for God above all else; the deep relationship with Jesus the Lord (« to prefer nothing to the love of Christ ») under the guidance of the Holy Spirit along the ladder of humility (Rule of Benedict, 7); the primacy of the Word of God; the common life by the exercise of brotherly love that overcomes differences of nationality, race, culture and language. As was indicated in the Symposium, the sons of St Sylvester are present above all in Asia (Sri Lanka, India, Philippines), where they carry out predominantly educational work among the local population, for the greatest part non-Catholics: in fact, the numerous schools conducted by the monks are attended mostly by pupils whose religion is Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam. Thus the students are called to practise tolerance, reciprocal respect and peaceful coexistence. These are values found in the Rule of Benedict, which St Sylvester made his own and which his monks continue to transmit. The recent foundations in the Democratic Republic of Congo (Congo-Kinshasa) and in the Re- public of Congo (Congo-Brazzaville) require Sylvestrine monks to face the problems of the reality of Africa. This is a new and difficult challenge that awaits the heirs of St Sylvester, called to realize today the original intuitions and evangelical intentions of the Founder. I hope that this important volume of the Proceedings will have a wide circulation, contributing to a better knowledge of St Sylvester and his spiritual inheritance. PIETRO CARD. PAROLIN Secretary of State of His Holiness BM_33-2_INGL.indb 10 25/05/2018 14:45:24 FOREWORD XI FOREWORD The Order of Saint Benedict has been enriched deeply by the presence of Sylvestrine monks since the hermit Saint Syl- vester Guzzolini first built his hermitage by the mountain of Montefano in the area now known as the town of Fabriano. From these humble roots, the community that Saint Sylvester had founded strictly followed the Rule of Saint Benedict, extend- ing eventually to dozens of monasteries throughout the Sylves- trine Congregation in the Italian regions of Marche, Umbria, and Tuscany, and beyond Italy with its presence in Sri Lanka, the Americas, Australia, India, the Philippines, and Congo. Per- haps Saint Sylvester would not have been able to imagine that his humble movement, first called the Order of Saint Benedict of Montefano, would have such wonderful, far-reaching impact on the religious and lay life of five continents across the globe. It has been my joy as Abbot Primate to represent the Ben- edictine Confederation through participation in this important Conference of Studies at the Motherhouse of Saint Sylvester at Fabriano. This Conference has sought to deepen our under- standing of the original charism of Sylvester as the holy Founder of the Sylvestrine Congregation, with various presentations ex- amining the essential elements of Sylvestrine life and their im- pact on the world over the past 750 years. Through the studious work of this Conference’s many prominent speakers, we are able to appreciate the profound influence that Saint Sylvester and the monks of the Sylvestrine Congregation have had on world monasticism, providing inspiration for monastic religious life for many years to come. During this international Conference that took place be- tween 1-3 June 2017 at Fabriano, participants greatly benefited from a deeply spiritual and highly cultured series of talks that highlighted the ecclesial and religious context of the Sylvestrine Congregation’s founding. Tupig was a highly demanded because lot of the tourist and devotees were looking for tupig as a “pasalubong” or take home present or snacks. They also sell some “pasalubong” products like “bukarilyo,” “bukayo”, banana and camote ships and “alamang” for additional profit to maximize the use of their market location and to grab also the opportunity to offer some products of Pangasinense to tourists. Date and day were the major factors that affect the sales of tupig like during Christmas and New year season, Holidays, Holy week, festival of Manaoag, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are the peak season increased sales of tupig. Weather can Profitability of Tupig in Manaoag, Pangasinan CORLA, MICHELLE S. Producers used their personal money as their capital in producing tupig. The amount of capital they used per production is from Php 500.00 to 1,200.00 and it provided a net gain of Php 863.00 per production or per day.

    L’immagine dell’Italia, eredità antica di Maria Grazia Maioli Archeologo Emerito della Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici dell’Emilia-Romagna Se chiedete a un ragazzo delle elementari o delle medie qual è la prima immagine che gli viene in mente pensando all’Italia, probabilmente vi dirà la sua forma geografica, il famoso stivale. Solo in seguito (ma non è detto) farà cenno alla figura femminile avvolta nel tricolore che compare a fumetto anche nei titoli di una famosa trasmissione televisiva. Vedere l’Italia come una persona che esiste e agisce non è al giorno d’oggi così immediato come poteva essere in altri momenti della storia patria. Manca l’abitudine all’utilizzo dei simboli e delle raffigurazioni simboliche, come è appunto la personificazione dell’Italia. Eppure la figura femminile, più o meno vestita come una donna “antica”, con la corona turrita, lo stellone in fronte e, nel caso, anche la spada, era per i nostri antenati un’immagine costantemente presente, fosse solo a livello inconscio. Compariva quasi ovunque ed era il simbolo dell’Italia, della Repubblica Italiana e quindi dell’essere Italiani: tutti sapevano che la testa turrita raffigurata un po’ dappertutto, dai francobolli alle monete, ai documenti ufficiali, rappresentava l’unione in un’unica matrice. La testa turrita è diventata il simbolo ufficiale dell’Italia solo dopo il referendum che sancì la 25 maggio 1958, Elezioni politiche fine della monarchia dei Savoia, dopo la Sulla copertina della Domenica del Corriere seconda guerra mondiale. Il simbolo non è l’Italia invita gli elettori a recarsi a votare comparso all’improvviso ma ha avuto una lunga gestazione, con variazioni nell’immagine e negli attributi che la caratterizzavano.

    CARDINAL CAJETAN RENAISSANCE MAN William Seaver, O.P. {)T WAS A PORTENT of things to come that St. Thomas J Aquinas' principal achievement-a brilliant synthesis of faith and reason-aroused feelings of irritation and confusion in most of his contemporaries. But whatever their personal sentiments, it was altogether too imposing, too massive, to be ignored. Those committed to established ways of thought were startled by the revolutionary character of his theological entente. William of la Mare, a representa­ tive of the Augustinian tradition, is typical of those who instinctively attacked St. Thomas because of the novel sound of his ideas without taking time out to understand him. And the Dominicans who rushed to the ramparts to vindicate a distinguished brother were, as often as not, too busy fighting to be able even to attempt a stone by stone ex­ amination of the citadel they were defending. Inevitably, it has taken many centuries and many great minds to measure off the height and depth of his theological and philosophical productions-but men were ill-disposed to wait. Older loyalities, even in Thomas' own Order, yielded but slowly, if at all, and in the midst of the confusion and hesitation new minds were fashioning the via moderna. Tempier and Kilwardby's official condemnation in 1277 of philosophy's real or supposed efforts to usurp theology's function made men diffident of proving too much by sheer reason. Scotism now tended to replace demonstrative proofs with dialectical ones, and with Ockham logic and a spirit of analysis de­ cisively supplant metaphysics and all attempts at an organic fusion between the two disciplines.

This is a special day for all of us in the Church in Los Angeles, because we are celebrating the rich Catholic faith of our Filipino people, and your deep roots here in our Archdiocese and in our country, which date back to the first evangelization of America, when the first Filipinos arrived here at Morro Bay in 1587. My brothers and sisters, as you all know, your ancestors were here — worshipping, working, evangelizing, serving the needy, and building our country — almost 200 years before America’s founding fathers. We can never forget this, my brothers and sisters! Always be proud of your roots. Proud of where you come from. Proud of your Filipino history and heritage, your culture and customs. Your culture is a rich treasure and a beautiful part of who you are, a beautiful part of your Catholic identity, which you are called to live and to proclaim as a light in our society. This novena of Simbang Gabi, and all of your traditions of piety and devotion, reminds us that the seeds of the Gospel have been sown in every culture, and have produced fruits of holiness and love.

    The Hospital and Church of the Schiavoni / Illyrian Confraternity in Early Modern Rome Jasenka Gudelj* Summary: Slavic people from South-Eastern Europe immigrated to Italy throughout the Early Modern period and organized them- selves into confraternities based on common origin and language. This article analyses the role of the images and architecture of the “national” church and hospital of the Schiavoni or Illyrian com- munity in Rome in the fashioning and management of their con- fraternity, which played a pivotal role in the self-definition of the Schiavoni in Italy and also served as an expression of papal for- eign policy in the Balkans. Schiavoni / Illyrians in Early Modern Italy and their confraternities People from the area broadly coinciding with present-day Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Herzegovina, and coastal Montenegro, sharing a com- mon Slavonic language and the Catholic faith, migrated in a steady flux to Italy throughout the Early Modern period.1 The reasons behind the move varied, spanning from often-quoted Ottoman conquests in the Balkans or plague epidemics and famines to the formation of merchant and diplo- matic networks, as well as ecclesiastic or other professional career moves.2 Moreover, a common form of short-term travel to Italy on the part of so- called Schiavoni or Illyrians was the pilgrimage to Loreto or Rome, while the universities of Padua and Bologna, as well as monastery schools, at- tracted Schiavoni / Illyrian students of different social extractions. The first known organized groups described as Schiavoni are mentioned in Italy from the fifteenth century. Through the Early Modern period, Schiavoni / Illyrian confraternities existed in Rome, Venice, throughout the Marche region (Ancona, Ascoli, Recanati, Camerano, Loreto) and in Udine.

Sacerdotal / A6 Church soon to implement changes in Mass translation By Pinky Barrientos, FSP CHANGES in the English translation of the Order of the Mass are soon to hit parishes across the country when the full implementation of the new liturgical text is adapted next year. The adoption of the new English translation of the Ro- man Missal has been approved by the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) during its plenary assembly in January this year. Some parts of familiar responses and prayers have been amended to reflect the true meaning in the original Latin text, the language of the Roman liturgy.
