Marine Animal Behaviour in a High CO2 Ocean

Hunt Department of Biology, University of New Brunswick Saint John Campus, 100 Tucker Park Road, Saint John E2L 4L5, NB, Canada ABSTRACT: Recently, the effects of ocean acidification (OA) on marine animal behaviour have garnered considerable attention, as they can impact biological interactions and, in turn, ecosystem structure and functioning. We reviewed current published literature on OA and marine behaviour and synthesize current understanding of how a high CO2 ocean may impact animal behaviour, elucidate critical unknowns, and provide suggestions for future research. Although studies have focused equally on vertebrates and invertebrates, vertebrate studies have primarily focused on coral reef fishes, in contrast to the broader diversity of invertebrate taxa studied. A quantitative synthesis of the direction and magnitude of change in behaviours from current conditions under OA scenarios suggests primarily negative impacts that vary depending on species, ecosystem, and behaviour. The interactive effects of co-occurring environmental parameters with increasing CO2 elicit effects different from those observed under elevated CO2 alone. Although 12% of studies have incorporated multiple factors, only one study has examined the effects of carbonate system variability on the behaviour of a marine animal. Altered GABAA receptor functioning under elevated CO2 appears responsible for many behavioural responses; however, this mechanism is unlikely to be universal. We recommend a new focus on determining the effects of elevated CO2 on marine animal behaviour in the context of multiple environmental drivers and future carbonate system variability, and the mechanisms governing the association between acid-base regulation and GABAA receptor functioning. -

Results indicate that, for seawater and dietary pathways, C. varia displays higher bioaccumulation capacities in terms of uptake rate from water and fraction absorbed from ingested food (assimilation efficiency) than Pecten maximus. Regarding sediment exposure, P. maximus displayed low steady-state Cd transfer factor (TFSS < 1); however, once incorporated, a very large part of Cd transferred from sediment (92%) was strongly retained within P. maximus tissues. Both species showed a high retention capacity for Cd (biological half-life, Tb1/2 > 4 months), suggesting efficient mechanisms of detoxification and storage in both species. -

INTRODUCTION In the Mediterranean Sea the genus Solecurtus Blainville, 1824, is represented by three species: S. scopula (Turton, 1822), S. strigilatus (Linne, 1758) and S. multistriatus (Scacchi, 1835). The last taxon was based by Scacchi (1835) (and not Scacchi, 1834, according to Cretella et ah, 1992) on a fossil specimen collected near Gravina, Puglia (Italy). Here the original description is given: "Testa ovali-oblonga, subaequilatera, antice oblique striata, striis approximatis angulo acuto in/lexis. Lata lin. 8, alta lin. 3". In the description 'lin.' (which stands for linea) is a standard size unit. The one adopted by the authors of that time corresponded to 2.25 mm; but, in this case, it is also possible that 'linea' represents a local Sicilian size unit (1.8 mm) as reported by Giannuzzi-Savelli et al. (1986). The author clearly stated that this species differs from the fossil and Recent specimens of "Solene bianco del Renieri" candidus of S. and of [S. I Molluscs: Bivalvia Laura A. Brink The bivalves (also known as lamellibranchs or pelecypods) include such groups as the clams, mussels, scallops, and oysters. The class Bivalvia is one of the largest groups of invertebrates on the Pacific Northwest coast, with well over 150 species encompassing nine orders and 42 families (Table 1).Despite the fact that this class of mollusc is well represented in the Pacific Northwest, the larvae of only a few species have been identified and described in the scientific literature. The larvae of only 15 of the more common bivalves are described in this chapter. Six of these are introductions from the East Coast. There has been quite a bit of work aimed at rearing West Coast bivalve larvae in the lab, but this has lead to few larval descriptions. Reproduction and Development Most marine bivalves, like many marine invertebrates, are broadcast spawners (e.g., Crassostrea gigas, Macoma balthica, and Mya arenaria,); the males expel sperm into the seawater while females expel their eggs (Fig. 1).Fertilization of an egg by a sperm occurs within the water column. Boa proba da importancia desta publicación é que Galicia aporta a práctica totalidade da produción española de navallas e longueiróns, un recurso que integra a tres especies: navalla, longueirón e longueirón vello, que se asentan no intermareal e submareal. Non entanto, as máis importantes extraccións do produto acádanse na zona submareal e son exercidas por mariscadores-mergulladores, coñecidos como “navalleiros”, que destacan por ter unhas características profesionais moi específicas, xa que practican a maior parte da súa actividade dende embarcacións, en zonas abertas, a miúdo alonxadas do litoral, e con técnicas de mergullo en apnea. Dende o punto de inflexión que supuxo a catástrofe do Prestige, que en novembro de 2002 afectou á meirande parte das zonas nas que se asentan as poboacións de navalla e longueirón, a partires do ano 2004 asistimos, na costa galega, ao paulatino incremento da produción, impulsada sen dúbida polos avances rexistrados na organización e regulación da explotación e nunha mellor comercialización, que implica a obtención dun máximo valor. -

THE EFFECT OF OCTOPUS PREDATION ON A SPONGE-SCALLOP ASSOCIATION Thomas J. Ewing , Kirt L. Onthank and David L. Cowles Walla Walla University Department of Biological Sciences ABSTRACT In the Puget Sound the scallop Chlamys hastata is often found with its valves encrusted with sponges. Scallops have been thought to benefit from this association by protection from sea star predation, but this idea has not been well supported by empirical evidence. Scallops have a highly effective swimming escape response and are rarely found to fall prey to sea stars in the field. Consequently, a clear benefit to the scallop to preserve the relationship is lacking. We propose that octopuses could provide the predation pressure to maintain this relationship. Two condi- tions must first be met for this hypothesis to be supported: 1) Octopuses eat a large quantity of scallops and 2) Octo- puses must be less likely to consume scallops encrusted with sponges than unencrusted scallops. We found that Chlamys hastata may comprise as much as one-third of the diet of giant Pacific octopus (Enteroctopus dofleini) and that E. dofleini is over twice as likely to choose an unencrusted scallop over an encrusted one. While scallops are a smaller portion of the diet of O. rubescens this species is five times as likely to consume scallops without sponge than those with. This provides evidence the octopuses may provide the adaptive pressure that maintains the scallop -sponge symbiosis. INTRODUCTION The two most common species of scallop in the Puget Sound and Salish Sea area of Washington State are Chlamys hastata and Chlamys rubida. -

ABSTRACT A taxonomic study has been carried out on scallops (family Pectinidae: Mollusca, Bivalvia) occurring in the low- er-earliest middle Pliocene deposits of the Campo de Dalías, Almería-Níjar Basin, and Carboneras Basin (prov- ince of Almería, SE Spain). The recently proposed suprageneric phylogenetic classification scheme for the fam- ily (Waller, 2006a) has been followed. Twenty-two species in twelve genera (Aequipecten, Amusium, Chlamys, Flabellipecten, Flexopecten, Gigantopecten, Hinnites, Korobkovia, Manupecten, Palliolum, Pecten, and Pseu- damussium) and three subfamilies (Chalmydinae, Palliolinae, and Pectininae) have been identified. This number of species is higher than previously reported for the same area. Additionally, the phylogenetic classification fol- lowed in this paper modifies the species attributions formerly used.
