En este sentido, los sistemas acuáticos de mares y océanos, por ocupar 2/3 de la superfi cie terrestre muestran tener un papel preponderante como suplidores de alimento. No obstante, a pesar que se han aumentado las fl otas y el esfuerzo pesquero, las capturas permanecen es- tancadas desde el año 1995, con una tasa de crecimiento media de solo 1,1% y enfrentan una variedad de restricciones. Por otra parte, la FAO alerta que el 52% de las poblaciones marinas están sobreexplotadas. Iberoamérica en general y España en particular, no escapan de este escenario global, ya que mantienen una elevada tasa de natalidad y el consumo per capita de pescado, como un alimento sano, sigue aumentando; sin embargo, algunos recursos pesqueros muestran signos de sobreexplotación (atún, boquerón, corvina, etc.). Aunado a ello, el cambio climático avanza produciendo desastres e irregularidades en la naturaleza acuática. En vista de lo anteriormente planteado, el V Foro Iberoamericano de los Recursos Marinos y la Acuicultura (V FIRMA Cádiz 2012), engendrado en el 2007 de la mano de la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela y la Universidad de Oriente, en el Foro de los Recursos Marinos y de la Acuicultura de las Rías Gallegas, que año a año se celebra en O Grove (Pontevedra, España), permitió iniciar un debate más amplio, integrando a los países iberomericanos, en función de la necesidad inmediata de fi jarse objetivos comunes para atender la preocupación de la creciente degradación de los océanos y de las zonas costeras, promover el manejo sos- tenible de los recursos vivos marinos a través de una pesca razonable, recuperar los bancos naturales y promover la acuicultura. El V FIRMA Cádiz 2012 nos brindó la oportunidad de poder discutir sobre el diag- nóstico y la pertinencia de enfocar estrategias para la pesca y la acuicultura en España e Iberoamérica, donde se establecieron debates de importancia que, sin duda, guiarán una mejor administración pesquera y promoción de la acuicultura. La participación de repre- sentantes de organismos como el IFAPA, UCA, SEA, CSIC, IEO, ICCM, Universidad de Santiago de Compostela, cuya afi nidad lingüística y cultural surgida por efecto de la emigra- ción, entre otras situaciones, mantiene fuertes vínculos a lo largo de generaciones con una afi nidad y correspondencia, en particular con las regiones de Andalucía y Galicia en España, y que sin duda dierón frutos para el enfoque y desarrollo común. En fi n, creemos que se cumplirán los objetivos y también que se sembraron semillas cuya fertilidad se comprobará en futuras ediciones en Iberoamérica. Hunt Department of Biology, University of New Brunswick Saint John Campus, 100 Tucker Park Road, Saint John E2L 4L5, NB, Canada ABSTRACT: Recently, the effects of ocean acidification (OA) on marine animal behaviour have garnered considerable attention, as they can impact biological interactions and, in turn, ecosystem structure and functioning. We reviewed current published literature on OA and marine behaviour and synthesize current understanding of how a high CO2 ocean may impact animal behaviour, elucidate critical unknowns, and provide suggestions for future research. Although studies have focused equally on vertebrates and invertebrates, vertebrate studies have primarily focused on coral reef fishes, in contrast to the broader diversity of invertebrate taxa studied. A quantitative synthesis of the direction and magnitude of change in behaviours from current conditions under OA scenarios suggests primarily negative impacts that vary depending on species, ecosystem, and behaviour. The interactive effects of co-occurring environmental parameters with increasing CO2 elicit effects different from those observed under elevated CO2 alone. Although 12% of studies have incorporated multiple factors, only one study has examined the effects of carbonate system variability on the behaviour of a marine animal. Altered GABAA receptor functioning under elevated CO2 appears responsible for many behavioural responses; however, this mechanism is unlikely to be universal. We recommend a new focus on determining the effects of elevated CO2 on marine animal behaviour in the context of multiple environmental drivers and future carbonate system variability, and the mechanisms governing the association between acid-base regulation and GABAA receptor functioning.

Therefore, biofuels from renewable sources can be an alternative to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and contribute to maintaining a healthy global environment and economic profitability. Unfortunately, biodiesel produced from food stocks generally consumed by humans and animals can be a source of increased food market prices due to the increased use of arable land for growing biomass for the production of first and second generation biofuels. The production of biofuels from microalgae, as a third generation of biodiesel production, has some distinctive advantages, such as their rapid growth rate, greenhouse gas binding capacity and high lipid production capacity. This mini-study examines the current status of algae-based biofuels as a renewable energy source and their impact on the environment.

Results indicate that, for seawater and dietary pathways, C. varia displays higher bioaccumulation capacities in terms of uptake rate from water and fraction absorbed from ingested food (assimilation efficiency) than Pecten maximus. Regarding sediment exposure, P. maximus displayed low steady-state Cd transfer factor (TFSS < 1); however, once incorporated, a very large part of Cd transferred from sediment (92%) was strongly retained within P. maximus tissues. Both species showed a high retention capacity for Cd (biological half-life, Tb1/2 > 4 months), suggesting efficient mechanisms of detoxification and storage in both species.

For that, we propose a simple bioreactor model accounting for light attenuation in the reactor due to biomass density and obtain the control law that optimizes productivity over a single day through the application of Pontryagin’s maximum principle, with the dilution rate being the main control. An important constraint on the obtained solution is that the biomass in the reactor should be at the same level at the beginning and at the end of the day so that the same control can be applied everyday and optimizes some form of long term productivity. Several scenarios are possible depending on the microalgae’s strain parameters and the maximal admissible value of the dilution rate: bang-bang or bang-singular-bang control or, if the growth rate of the algae is very strong in the presence of light, constant maximal dilution. A bifurcation diagram is presented to illustrate for which values of the parameters these different behaviors occur.

DFO launched its Fisheries and Aquaculture Clean Technology Adoption Program in 2017, pledging a total of CAN $20 million over four years to help the sheries and aquaculture industries improve their environmental performance. To date, $9.3 million has been committed. The largest grant distributed was $101,817 to the Sth’oqui Aquaculture Limited Partnership of the Sumas First Nation, which operates a 100-metric-ton tilapia farm in Chilliwack, British Columbia. The grant supports the installation of an anaerobic digester which converts sh waste to biogas, fertilizer and water. In the process it reduces waste and produces low-carbon energy to power the land-based facility.
