  • Marine Animal Behaviour in a High CO2 Ocean
Vol. 536: 259–279, 2015 MARINE ECOLOGY PROGRESS SERIES Published September 29 doi: 10.3354/meps11426 Mar Ecol Prog Ser REVIEW Marine animal behaviour in a high CO2 ocean Jeff C. Clements*, Heather L. Hunt Department of Biology, University of New Brunswick Saint John Campus, 100 Tucker Park Road, Saint John E2L 4L5, NB, Canada ABSTRACT: Recently, the effects of ocean acidification (OA) on marine animal behaviour have garnered considerable attention, as they can impact biological interactions and, in turn, ecosystem structure and functioning. We reviewed current published literature on OA and marine behaviour and synthesize current understanding of how a high CO2 ocean may impact animal behaviour, elucidate critical unknowns, and provide suggestions for future research. Although studies have focused equally on vertebrates and invertebrates, vertebrate studies have primarily focused on coral reef fishes, in contrast to the broader diversity of invertebrate taxa studied. A quantitative synthesis of the direction and magnitude of change in behaviours from current conditions under OA scenarios suggests primarily negative impacts that vary depending on species, ecosystem, and behaviour. The interactive effects of co-occurring environmental parameters with increasing CO2 elicit effects different from those observed under elevated CO2 alone. Although 12% of studies have incorporated multiple factors, only one study has examined the effects of carbonate system variability on the behaviour of a marine animal. Altered GABAA receptor functioning under elevated CO2 appears responsible for many behavioural responses; however, this mechanism is unlikely to be universal. We recommend a new focus on determining the effects of elevated CO2 on marine animal behaviour in the context of multiple environmental drivers and future carbonate system variability, and the mechanisms governing the association between acid-base regulation and GABAA receptor functioning.

In the last few years, a sharp increase in the number of descriptions of new species of West African cone snails, particularly from the Cabo Verde Archipelago, has taken place. In previous studies, we used mitogenome sequences for reconstructing robust phylogenies, which comprised in total 120 individuals representing the majority of species (69.7%) described from this biogeographical region (except Angolan endemics) and grouped into seven genera within the family Conidae.

Bustamante, email address : [email protected] blisher-authenticated version is av Abstract: The uptake and loss kinetics of Cd were determined in two species of scallops from the European coasts, the variegated scallop Chlamys varia and the king scallop Pecten maximus, following exposures via seawater, phytoplankton and sediment using highly sensitive radiotracer techniques (109Cd). Results indicate that, for seawater and dietary pathways, C. varia displays higher bioaccumulation capacities in terms of uptake rate from water and fraction absorbed from ingested food (assimilation efficiency) than Pecten maximus. Regarding sediment exposure, P. maximus displayed low steady-state Cd transfer factor (TFSS < 1); however, once incorporated, a very large part of Cd transferred from sediment (92%) was strongly retained within P. maximus tissues. Both species showed a high retention capacity for Cd (biological half-life, Tb1/2 > 4 months), suggesting efficient mechanisms of detoxification and storage in both species.

  • Taxonomy Developments & Publications
Publication History Prior to the 1960’s, there were few collectors in Angola who analysed specimens, the localities, and published information. Shells, brought back to Europe by traders and seamen, were analysed by conchologists of the time, based on shell morphology and pattern. The earliest descriptions were C. genuanus by Linneaus, 1758 , C. ermineus Born, 1778 and C. pulcher by Lightfoot, 1786; all West African species but found in Angola. Reeve in his 1843/1844 publication of cones introduced C. tabidus together with the first two of the species endemic to Angola ie C. aemulus and C. bulbus. Kiener, 1845 described C. guttatus, a name deemed to be a homonym and replaced by Da Motta in 1991 as C. neoguttatus. Kiener in 1848 introduced three more endemic cones ie C. africanus, C. variegatus and C. zebroides. Sowerby III described C. carnalis in 1879 and C. fuscolineatus in 1905. Tryon in his 1884 series of monographs published C. chytreus. Paes-Da Franca described two species in 1957, C. lucirensis and C. angolensis. Both species have been consistently accepted as junior synonyms of C. chytreus and C.bulbus. By the 1970’s Trovão and several Portuguese began collecting in an organised manner in Angola. Given, the diversity in colour pattern and form of specimens in any population, identifying the species boundaries became a problem, so Trovão introduced other factors into his descriptions of new species, the animal features, the periostracum, and the radula. His 1975 and 1978 publications contained several new species. C. musivus, C. cepasi C. nobrei and C. naranjus in 1975 and C.

  • BJ7- 123-128. New Petaloconchus
Biodiversity Journal , 2012, 3 (2): 123-128 A new species of Petaloconchus Lea, 1843 from the Mediter - ranean Sea (Mollusca, Gastropoda, Vermetidae) Danilo Scuderi Dipartimento di Biologia Animale, Laboratorio di Biologia Marina, Università di Catania, Via Androne, 81 - 95124 Catania, Italy; e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Petaloconchus (Macrophragma ) laurae n. sp. is a vermetid here described as new. It is very similar in shell characters to both the species reported for the Mediterranean sea, the fossil Petaloconchus intortus (Lamarck, 1818) and the recent Petaloconchus (Macrophragma ) glomeratus (Linnaeus, 1758), but the peculiar structure of the internal keels and the proto - conch distinguish the new species from all the congeners; the external morphology of the soft parts add a new item in the discrimination of the recent species. The holotype of P. glo - meratus is housed in BMNH and it is here compared with the new species. KEY WORDS Vermetidae, new species, Petaloconchus n. sp., taxonomy, Mediterranean Sea. Received 18.04.2012; accepted 19.06.2012; printed 30.06.2012 introdUCtion holotype of P. glomeratus and with P. intortus (La - marck, 1818), a fossil congener of the plio-plei - The species of the genus Petaloconchus Lea, stocenic Mediterranean area. 1843 are characterised by the presence in the colu - The new species is here distinguished by any mellar zone of a series of structures, i.e. internal other species of Petaloconchus mainly on the keels, whose number and arrangement is a character basis of the internal keel arrangement and the for the first time described and utilised by Carpenter shape of protoconch: additional characters useful (1856) as a species-specific character.

The and differences between this and Palliolum status of the pectinid genus Pseudamussium Mörch, 1853 is discussed, taxon Monterosato, 1884 are outlined. Five species from the Neogene of Belgium are assigned to Pseudamussium, viz. P. princeps (J. de C. Sowerby, 1826), P. edegemense (Glibert, 1945), P. lilli (Pusch, 1837), P. sulcatum (Müller, 1776), and P. clavatum (Poli, 1795). All of these described and and their and here are illustrated, stratigraphic ranges palaeoecology discussed. Pseudamussium sulcatum is the P.
