    A report on Priory College South Wales Pontypool Campus Coleg Gwent Blaendare Road Pontypool Torfaen NP4 5YE Date of inspection: December 2019 by Estyn, Her Majesty’s Inspectorate for Education and Training in Wales A report on Priory College South Wales December 2019 About Priory College South Wales Priory College South Wales is an independent specialist college, situated within the Pontypool campus of Coleg Gwent, the further education institution (FEI) serving south-east Wales. Priory College South Wales was established in 2010 and is administered by Priory Education Services, which is part of the wider Priory Group. The college offers day placements for young adults aged 16 to 25 with Asperger syndrome, autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) and associated conditions. There are currently 32 learners at the college. All learners come to the college from the local area. Around a fifth of learners access education in-house, exclusively at the college, and follow pre-entry to level 2 courses, including independent living skills. The other learners follow full-time courses at Coleg Gwent from a range of programmes from entry level through to level 3. All learners, irrespective of their main place of study, receive both in-class and additional support by Priory College staff. The last core inspection of the college was in January 2017. The college manager was appointed in 2017. 1 A report on Priory College South Wales December 2019 Main findings Strengths The college provides a calm, welcoming environment that enables learners to feel safe and secure. This contributes to the very high levels of attendance. The college provides all learners with high levels of support and guidance that is based on a sound understanding of learner needs.

    + POST 16 TRANSPORT OR TRAVEL GRANT FOR STUDENTS RESIDING IN MONMOUTHSHIRE The time has now come to decide what you are going to do next once you have finished your GCSEs or Vocational Studies. Students residing in Monmouthshire who are over the age of 16 and under 19 at the start of the academic year are entitled to subsidised Home to School/College transport subject to the post 16 criteria as set out below. Assistance continues up to the end of the academic year during which the student has their 19th birthday. (i) The student resides in Monmouthshire. (ii) The student lives 2 miles or more from the educational establishment and (iii) attends the nearest appropriate educational establishment (even if the establishment is outside the county boundary). Please Note: There is no longer a statutory transport provision for Post 16 students, therefore a Post 16 Application Form must be completed for all options outlined below every new academic year. Forms can be downloaded from Monmouthshire Web Site at www.monmouthshire.gov.uk (search for School Transport) or obtained from your school/college or Monmouthshire’s One Stop Shops in Abergavenny, Caldicot, Chepstow and Monmouth. If you are undecided or waiting for your exam results we would advise you to complete the application form and mark as provisional in the section provided.     ANNUAL REVIEW REPORT WELSH IN EDUCATION STRATEGIC PLAN DECEMBER 2020 OVERALL SUMMARY Despite the difficulties posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Council has made good progress in terms of its PLAN commitment to developing Welsh-medium education. A school reorganisation proposal to establish a new Welsh-medium primary school has been approved, and work is now underway to ensure that the school is able to open as planned in September 2021. A temporary governing body has been established, and all applications received by the Council for admission to the nursery class in September 2021 were successful. Applications can now be made for places in the Reception year group. Two non-maintained providers were successful in their tender applications to provide Foundation Phase education, and this will assist in meeting the shortfall of Rising 3 nursery places that the Council has faced at times in recent years. Additional Welsh-medium Flying Start and Mudiad Meithrin provisions are planned, and further work on these aspects will progress into 2021. The provision of improved facilities at Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed is a priority project within the Council’s Band B programme, and work has now commenced on site. This project will result in capital investment of £18.7m. 1 Outcome 1: More seven-year-old children being taught through the medium of Welsh KEY ANNUAL DATA (where possible, please note if data shows a % increase / decrease since previous reporting period) The January 2020 PLASC return confirmed that 103 Year 3 pupils were being taught through the medium of Welsh, an increase from 91 in the previous year.
