MORT1943 ET RÉSISTANCE BIEN QU’AYANT rarement connu les noms de leurs victimes juives, les nazis entendaient que ni Zivia Lubetkin, ni Richard Glazar, ni Thomas Blatt ne survivent à la « solution finale ». Ils survécurent cependant et, après la Shoah, chacun écrivit un livre sur la Résistance en 1943. Quelque 400 000 Juifs vivaient dans le ghetto de Varsovie surpeuplé, mais les épi- démies, la famine et les déportations à Treblinka – 300 000 personnes entre juillet et septembre 1942 – réduisirent considérablement ce nombre. Estimant que 40 000 Juifs s’y trouvaient encore (le chiffre réel approchait les 55 000), Heinrich Himmler, le chef des SS, ordonna la déportation de 8 000 autres lors de sa visite du ghetto, le 9 janvier 1943. Cependant, sous la direction de Mordekhaï Anielewicz, âgé de 23 ans, le Zydowska Organizacja Bojowa (ZOB, Organisation juive de combat) lança une résistance armée lorsque les Allemands exécutèrent l’ordre d’Himmler, le 18 janvier. Bien que plus de 5 000 Juifs aient été déportés le 22 janvier, la Résistance juive – elle impliquait aussi bien la recherche de caches et le refus de s’enregistrer que la lutte violente – empêcha de remplir le quota et conduisit les Allemands à mettre fin à l’Aktion. Le répit, cependant, fut de courte durée. En janvier, Zivia Lubetkin participa à la création de l’Organisation juive de com- bat et au soulèvement du ghetto de Varsovie. « Nous combattions avec des gre- nades, des fusils, des barres de fer et des ampoules remplies d’acide sulfurique », rapporte-t-elle dans son livre Aux jours de la destruction et de la révolte. -

‘Pulsen’ Abraham Puls had in Amsterdam een bloeiend verhuisbedrijf. Al sinds mei 1934 was hij fanatiek lid van de NSB. Geen wonder dat hij graag meewerkte toen het om het leeghalen van de huizen van gearresteerde en gedeporteerde Joden ging. Hij reed met zijn verhuiswagens waar A. Puls (en niet Abraham, dat deed te Joods aan) op stond naar elk adres dat hem door de nazi’s werd aangegeven om er huisraad op te halen. Amsterdam. Verhuiswagen firma Abraham Puls. Zo heeft zijn bedrijf ook Het Achterhuis, waar Anne Frank en de andere onderduikers zich schuil hielden, ‘leeggepulst’, geplunderd. Na de oorlog is Puls opgepakt door de Binnenlandse Strijdkrachten en gevangengezet in het beruchte Huis van Bewaring aan de Weteringschans in Amsterdam. Pulsen gebeurde ook door particulieren: zogenaamde ‘goede’ Nederlanders gingen of drongen de pas verlaten woningen van Joden binnen en maakten een enorme chaos. Zij roofden van alles en vernielden de mooiste spullen voordat Puls kwam. Zelfs het koud geworden eten op het fornuis werd niet vergeten! En dat gebeurde door mensen van wie niemand dit verwachtte: gewone, nette Nederlanders. Voor het beroven van de Nederlandse Joden was een grote organisatie nodig. De opzet was: alle Joden oppakken en deporteren en hun bezittingen onteigenen en in beslag nemen. Dit kon alleen maar slagen met de hulp van Nederlandse medestanders: de NSB. De partij 52 steunde de Duitse overheersing en sympathiseerde met de nationaal-socialistische ideeën. De NSB hielp maar wat graag mee. De WA (Weerbaarheids Afdeling, de knokploegen van de NSB) stookte onrust en lokte ruzies uit en: zij had een grenzeloze hekel aan de Joden. -

Biography of Franz Stangl (1908-1971) Childhood and Early Life Franz Stangl was born on March 26, 1908 in a small town in Austria called Almunster. His father worked as a night watchman, and believed that Stangl was not his child (implying his wife cheated on him). Stangl was petrified of his father because he was continually beaten by him. When Stangl was eight years old his father died of malnutrition, and a year later his mother re- married. When he was fourteen, his step-father wanted him to leave school and work at a local steel mill. At fifteen, he left school and became an apprentice weaver. He finished his apprenticeship in three years and when he was eighteen and a half became the youngest master weaver in Australia. At twenty-three years old he discovered there was no further career advancement, so he applied for a job with the police force, as he was always attracted to the job of policemen, liking the safety and security it represented. Several months later he was told to report to the Kaplanhof (police training barracks in Linz) for training where he started out as a rookie for the Austrian police force, working as a traffic policeman and on the riot squad. He volunteered for ‘special duties’, which included in participating in street battles in Linz against socialists. He earned a silver medal for removing socialists from a local Cinema where they had been entrenched. In 1934, the Nazi’s assassinated the Chancellor of Austria, but it was clear that the Austrian police criticized this action. -

These mass murders were allegedly perpetrated at the Sobibór “death” camp in east- ern Poland. According to mainstream historiography, 170,000 to 250,000 Jews were exterminated there in gas chambers between 1942 and 1943. The corpses were buried in mass graves and later incinerated on an open-air pyre. But do these serious claims really stand up to scrutiny? In Sobibor: Holocaust Propaganda and Reality, the official version of what transpired at Sobibór is put under the microscope. It is shown that the histori- ography of the camp is not based on solid evidence, but on the selective use of eyewitness testimonies, which in turn are riddled with contradictions and out- right absurdities. This book could exonerate John Demjanjuk. For more than half a century, mainstream Holocaust historians made no real attempts to muster material evidence for their claims about Sobibór. Finally, in the 21st century, professional historians carried out an archeological survey at the former camp site. Their findings—and the findings of many oth- ers—are here presented in detail and fatal implications for the extermination camp theory are revealed. The Holocaust illustrates how silence and indifference to the suffering of others, can unintentionally, serve to perpetuate the problem. It is an unparalleled event in history that brings to the forefront the horrors of racism, prejudice, and anti-Semitism, as well as the capacity for human evil. The Canadian education system should aim to be: democratic, non-repressive, humanistic and non-discriminating. It should promote tolerance and offer bridges for understanding of the other for reducing alienation and for accommodating differences. Democratic education is the backbone of a democratic society, one that fosters the underpinning values of respect, morality, and citizenship. Through understanding of the events, education surrounding the Holocaust has the ability to broaden students understanding of stereotyping and scapegoating, ensuring they become aware of some of the political, social, and economic antecedents of racism and provide a potent illustration of both the bystander effect, and the dangers posed by an unthinking conformity to social norms and group peer pressure. The study of the Holocaust coupled with Canada’s struggle with its own problems and challenges related to anti-Semitism, racism, and xenophobia will shed light on the issues facing our society. What was The Holocaust? History’s most extreme example of anti- Semitism, the Holocaust, was the systematic state sponsored, bureaucratic, persecution and annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1933-1945. The term “Holocaust” is originally of Greek origin, meaning ‘sacrifice by fire’ (www.ushmm.org). -
