Welcome 2019-2020 Choir Members!

With great excitement and enthusiasm I look forward to beginning my seventh year at Pius X Catholic High School. Music has a vital role in my life. Now in my 17th year of teaching, my goal for you, the singer, is to develop your independent musical ability, to gain confidence in sharing your gifts and talents with the world, to have fun exploring choral music, to grow deeper in your faith, and to become a lifelong musician.

Each singer is a vital part of the program; no one “star” can make a choir. Remember: WE CAN DO TOGETHER WHAT NONE OF US CAN DO ALONE.

This handbook is designed to provide pertinent information that singers and parents need to know for the upcoming year. While this handbook was designed to give you as much information as possible at the time of printing, things will evolve and change throughout the school year. Please check your emails, Teamapp, and the Performing Arts tab on the Pius X website for updated information, and feel free to contact me with any concerns you have.

The Best Is Yet to Come!

Sincerely, Todd Krier

Greetings, Pius X Choir Students and Parents,

“The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.” I love this quote because it takes everyone working together in harmony, both with positive work ethic and positive outlooks towards one another to make great things happen. As we embark on this year’s musical journey, it’s important to remember that we are better together and it’s worth the work. We intend to have all expectations, events and procedures outlined in this handbook, however, we do ask that you’ll be gracious and kind when things inevitably get added, tweaked or changed altogether.

Best wishes, Shani Sorensen

Grading

Students will be graded quarterly based on the following: 1. Performances / Dress Rehearsals a. Of utmost importance; punctual attendance, correct attire and performance etiquette is essential i. In school performance = 20-50 points ii. Gig outside of school = 20-75 points iii. Concert = 100 points 2. Powerschool Learning assignments, Journal Essay writings, Score markings, etc. = 10–50 points. 3. Rehearsal Etiquette = 5 points per rehearsal a. Given frequently, based on positive contribution, preparation and use of class materials, effective work with classmates and directors, proper rehearsal etiquette 4. Makeup points a. Excused absence from performance i. Refer to “Concert Make-up” Policy - to be completed within one week of missed performance to receive credit. b. If a student needs to make up points due to absence or low test score, they may submit an i. Extra Credit Recovery Sheet (download from Powerschool Learning). 1. note - not all absences are excused. If unexcused, make up points may not apply. Up to the discretion of the director. Absences ● Excused absences are given for school activities. If you cannot be at a concert for a good reason (and there are some good reasons), you need to submit a WRITTEN EXCUSE (or email) signed/written by a parent BEFORE THE CONCERT ● Illnesses and emergencies happen and in this case let your director know ASAP. ● Work is not a valid excuse to miss a concert, performance or scheduled rehearsal. At the beginning of the year, let your employers know what dates you have mandatory performances so they have ample amounts of time to cover your absence. ● See details under Pre-Absence Form. ● If you miss a concert, you will be expected to perform music by yourself or in a small group along with a recording or piano accompaniment to earn partial makeup points. ● NOTE: Excused Absences will be approved by the director. Submitting a written excuse DOES NOT guarantee an excused absence where make up work will be approved. ● Unexcused absences (such as working, oversleeping, not getting a ride) from a concert and/or rehearsal will result in penalty to one’s grade. We are a team and the expectation is that each teammate is supporting the team in full.

7 Updated by Sorensen/Krier 8/14/19

Rehearsal Etiquette: Techniques & Expectations Proper Posture and Vocal Technique ● Students will learn and rehearse with proper vocal technique and posture for good vocal production.

Binder/Music/Pencil ● Each student will need a ½ inch black binder which will be assigned a number for music and a slot per choir ● Students will need to take binder from slot and be in his/her assigned seat/riser position, with a pencil in hand, when the bell rings.

Music ● Students will make the correct markings in music with a pencil as instructed by the director. ● Students will be responsible for turning in all music checked out to him/her. ● The student will owe the choral music department money if the music is lost, stolen, or badly damaged. ● Take care of your sheet music!

Gum, Candy, Food in Rehearsal Spaces ● Students will refrain from chewing gum or candy during the rehearsal period or concert. ● Food in rehearsal spaces is limited to special occasions permitted by the directors only. ● Food Allergies: Please notify your director as soon as you are aware of any severe food allergies you have. ● All food in the music room MUST be free of nuts at all times.

Warm-ups ● We will begin each day with vocal and physical warm-ups. ● Everyone stands and participates. If you are in the room, you rehearse. NO ONE studies or sits out for illness. ● If you are having throat problems or feel ill, TELL THE DIRECTOR RIGHT AWAY. It is the student’s responsibility to communicate this to the director. Students will follow along silently with what is being rehearsed Audiate (sing your part in your head) and mouth the words

Bookbags and Personal Belongings ● Jackets, sweatshirts, and backpacks should be placed by the entrance to the room, away from the rehearsal area so students have room to move.

Classroom Discussion ● Students must refrain from talking without permission. ● Due to a very large group, the student is expected to always raise his/her hand to speak. ● A mutual respect among students and the director is expected. ● Respect others, so they will respect you. ● Negative talk is not tolerated; take the positive approach instead. ● Individual questions and concerns should be addressed in-between classes or after school with the director, if appropriate. ● Be careful that “venting” doesn’t turn into habitual gossip. We are only as good as our group wants to be and that can’t happen with ill feelings towards each other/directors. ● You don’t have to agree with someone to be respectful and courteous towards them.

8 Updated by Sorensen/Krier 8/14/19

Behavior ● Students are expected to show motivation towards class goals and respect for fellow students and the director. ● Students are expected to stay on task throughout rehearsals and performances.

Student Attitude and behavior ● Students are expected to maintain a positive attitude and contribute positively to each rehearsal. ● This affects the total group, so it is a very important part of the grading process. ● Do your best and your grade will reflect it.

Concert Make-up Policy

If you will or have missed a concert due to illness, emergency, or another absence, which has been excused by the director, please follow the guidelines below in making up your concert.

The student’s grade can be recovered by completing the concert by themselves and recording it. Students will need to video record themselves singing their part to all the songs on the concert which their choir is responsible for, then send their director a link of it. Students are to use the recordings of our choir or learning tracks, which are posted on TeamApp and sing along to them. If there are no songs posted, please find a youtube recording of a choir singing the same song, play that in the background as the student sings along to it. Students will be graded on accuracy of their voice part. Students can then post the recording to google drive, dropbox or youtube (under the “unlisted” setting, if preferred) and email a link of the recordings to their director. Please do not try to send videos over email, as it is generally too big of a file size to send via email. It often takes a lot of time to load videos. Please allow extra time to ensure your assignment is submitted properly and you receive credit. If you are unable to upload to any of the above online platforms, you may turn in a flash drive labeled with you name to your director.

This needs to be completed and sent to the director within a week of the missed performance. Fill out and return this sheet with your recordings. ______

Choir Parent Group & Help

We are fortunate to have a very large choir program and are filled with many wonderful students and wonderful families. In order to help the Vocal Music Department facilitate a successful program your help is essential. The Pius Choir Parent group is voluntary and is dedicated to assisting the department in any way possible. Although you may not have time to assist as a committee leader, your help is appreciated whenever you are available. We will use an event based need this year to be more efficient so parents can volunteer on dates they are available.

We will use Volunteer Spot. Please sign in to read a list of events, duties and tasks. THANK YOU!!!

Auditions 2020-2021 Students are asked to rank their top choices of choirs they would like to join in the following school year. We do our best to accommodate them, but we also try to put them in the choir that best suits their personality and musical aptitude! All students are strongly encouraged to attend Harmony Explosion Camp in the Summer! Auditions take place in April. See next page for more details. Sotto Voce – Mixed Acappella Choir (18-30 members) – Mr. Krier ● Due to its small size and difficult repertoire, students must demonstrate high proficiency in music theory, vocal independence and clarity of tone. ● Students qualify for audition to this ensemble by adequate midterm theory and singing scores. Directors will POST the first call-back list for those students who qualified for the audition. ● On Friday, April 3, the first callback list will go up, students will receive a song to learn, and they must be able to sing in a quartet from memory on Thursday, April 16. ● Students who perform at a high level will make callback #2 which will be posted, and students will come Friday, April 17 for the second round, choral sight reading. ● Students must have been in choir at least one semester or must demonstrate exceptional musicianship. If they have not participated in choir previously, students must obtain a letter of recommendation from a previous voice, piano, or band instructor. Students are strongly encouraged to attend Harmony Explosion Camp in the Summer! In A MADRIGAL DINNER YEAR (Even Numbered Years), students may not be both in Sotto Voce and in the One-Act Play if it occurs on the same weekend. Must be able to demonstrate a British accent. Concert Choir – Mixed Choir (around 50-60 members) - Mr. Krier & Mrs. Sorensen ● Due to the amount of repertoire Concert Choir sings, students must score in the medium to high proficiency level on midterm singing and theory evaluations. ● Students must have been in choir at least one semester or must demonstrate exceptional musicianship. If they have not participated in choir previously, students must obtain a letter of recommendation from a previous voice, piano, or band instructor. Cantabella – Advanced Women’s Choir - Mrs. Sorensen ● Placement is determined by student preference, and students must score in the medium to high proficiency level on midterm singing and theory evaluations. ● If students have not participated in choir previously, they must have taken band or piano lessons at some point OR must demonstrate some knowledge of basic music theory. Men’s (X-Men’s) and Women’s (Laudamus) Choirs - Mr. Krier & Mrs. Sorensen ● NO AUDITION REQUIRED. ● These choirs are fun and focus on building musical skills that students need to gain confidence for lifelong singing and preparation for other groups at Pius. AcaBellas & aCaFellas – Select Women’s, Men’s A cappella Small Groups - Mr. Krier & Mrs. Sorensen ● Students in these choirs will be auditioned from any choir in the fall and will hold rehearsals every during 5A/D one day a week and will rehearse after school from 3:45-4:45 pm the last Wednesday of each month. Attendance at Harmony Explosion Camp in the Summer is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Show Choir Auditions - Spectrum (Mon & every other Thurs 6:30-8:30 pm) & Prism (Tues 3:45-6 pm) ● Auditions: April 20-22, 2020 - 6-8:30 pm.
