Page 1 Welcome A Note from Nancy Miller, WGC President Hello Ladies! Welcome, new members and returning members alike! We are lucky to have such a large and talented group of singers this year–we actually have more members than ever before! Your commitment to one of the oldest organizations on campus continues the traditions that thrive today. I"m looking forward to this year and the many advancements we are making to improve our group cohesiveness, sound, and reputation on campus. We have already made great strides toward these goals at our retreat and will continue to make improvements throughout the year. It is an exciting time to be in the Women"s Glee Club, with many notable events coming up this year including the launch of our new Web site, a new CD Rachel Coyle and Jessica Trask at the 2010 recording, and a tour to Chicago! I am very proud of Involvement Fair. Officers and Section Leaders our group thus far and am honored to be able to make worked the WGC booth and collected almost 200 such great music and memories with all of you this names: a new record! See you in Glee, Nancy Conductor's Corner A word from Dr. Schnipke Off to a Great Start! In this first Medley, I just want to reiterate how pleased I am with the start of this fall quarter. !We had a wonderful turn- out at auditions in not only quantity but also quality. !This extremely large and talented group of new members is proving to be an exciting addition to the group. !Also, the veteran members, including the officers and section leaders, are doing an excellent job of providing leadership and using their talents and experience to help take the Women's Glee Club to the next level both organizationally and musically. !Additionally, I'm very excited about our projects for the year, including the upcoming concert with the Kent State Women's Chorus, our traditional joint concerts with the OSU Men's Glee Club, our spring tour, and the new CD! !The 2010-2011 Women's Glee Club has the potential for an incredible year of music making! As we approach the mid-term and as all of our schedules get more and more full, it is extremely important to plan ahead. !We have several performances between now and the end of the quarter and as the Women's Glee Club schedule gets more demanding, many of your academic projects, tests, papers, etc. will also begin to take priority. !Take care to manage your time carefully and during performance weeks, be sure to make time to keep up with your academic commitments. !Doing so will allow you to succeed academically while you enjoy making music with the Glee Club. !(It will also cut down on your stress levels during these busy times!) Once again, thank you for a wonderful start to the year! !I'm looking forward to working together to make the 2010-2011 OSU Women's Glee Club an incredible organization that not only makes beautiful and exciting music, but also that is a source of pride for its membership, the School of Music, and the The Ohio State University. Batey: Naked LunchNAKED for Lawyers: LUNCH William FOR S. Burroughs LAWYERS: on Capital Punishme WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS ON CAPITAL PUNISHMENT, PORNOGRAPHY, THE DRUG TRADE, AND THE PREDATORY NATURE OF HUMAN INTERACTION t ROBERT BATEY* At eighty-two, William S. Burroughs has become a literary icon, "arguably the most influential American prose writer of the last 40 years,"' "the rebel spirit who has witch-doctored our culture and consciousness the most."2 In addition to literature, Burroughs' influence is discernible in contemporary music, art, filmmaking, and virtually any other endeavor that represents "what Newt Gingrich-a Burroughsian construct if ever there was one-likes to call the counterculture."3 Though Burroughs has produced a steady stream of books since the 1950's (including, most recently, a recollection of his dreams published in 1995 under the title My Education), Naked Lunch remains his masterpiece, a classic of twentieth century American fiction.4 Published in 1959' to t I would like to thank the students in my spring 1993 Law and Literature Seminar, to whom I assigned Naked Lunch, especially those who actually read it after I succumbed to fears of complaints and made the assignment optional. Their comments, as well as the ideas of Brian Bolton, a student in the spring 1994 seminar who chose Naked Lunch as the subject for his seminar paper, were particularly helpful in the gestation of this essay; I also benefited from the paper written on Naked Lunch by spring 1995 seminar student Christopher Dale. Gary Minda of Brooklyn Law School commented on an early draft of the essay, as did several Stetson University colleagues: John Cooper, Peter Lake, Terrill Poliman (now at Illinois), and Manuel Ramos (now at Tulane) of the College of Law, Michael Raymond of the English Department and Greg McCann of the School of Business Administration.

IDENTITY AND SOLIDARITY IN ONLINE COMMUNITIES: QUEER IDENITIES AND GLEE Katie M. Buckley A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music August 2014 Committee: Katherine Meizel, Advisor Kara Attrep Megan Rancier © 2014 Katie Buckley All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Katherine Meizel, Advisor Glee, a popular FOX television show that began airing in 2009, has continuously pushed the limits of what is acceptable on American television. This musical comedy, focusing on a high school glee club, incorporates numerous stereotypes and real-world teenage struggles. This thesis focuses on the queer characteristics of four female personalities: Santana, Brittany, Coach Beiste, and Coach Sue. I investigate how their musical performances are producing a constructive form of mass media by challenging hegemonic femininity through camp and by producing relatable queer female role models. In addition, I take an ethnographic approach by examining online fan blogs from the host site Tumblr. By reading the blogs as a digital archive and interviewing the bloggers, I show the positive and negative effects of an online community and the impact this show has had on queer girls, allies, and their worldviews. iv This work is dedicated to any queer human being who ever felt alone as a teenager. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to extend my greatest thanks to my teacher and advisor, Dr. Meizel, for all of her support through the writing of this thesis and for always asking the right questions to keep me thinking. I would also like to thank Dr.
