    Introduction Testimonies of Resistance Nicholas Chare and Dominic Williams R As the late director Claude Lanzmann and his editor Ziva Postec began to put some shape on the hundreds of hours of footage that he had filmed for Shoah (dir. Claude Lanzmann, France, 1985), it became clear to them that the central space around which their film should circle was the gas chamber.1 It was also clear that they could not, and should not, represent this space pictorially. Instead, it had to be evoked by testimony, that of the people who had worked around and in the chambers: the Sonderkommando (SK), or their equivalents, in Auschwitz, Chełmno and Treblinka. Lanzmann was therefore making the claim that these survivors in particular were central to an understanding of the entire period of persecution and mass murder of the Jewish people in Europe. Lanzmann’s approach placed itself in opposition to what had gone before: accounts of survival and life in the concentration camps, the use of archive footage taken by perpetrators and liberators. His new approach was to concentrate on what the witnesses of the gas chambers said, paying them closer atten- tion than they had been paid before.2 The SK had indeed been a group that had been given less consideration than might be expected. They were forced to labour at the heart of one of the killing centres of the Holocaust. At Auschwitz in particular, they witnessed, as they worked, hundreds of thousands of fellow Jews from all over Europe being brought into the crematorium buildings of Birkenau, tricked or forced into undressing and entering the gas chambers.

Examples for the Caribbean include golf, bird watching and diving. Note that “niche” does not necessarily mean “small” – niche markets can generate large numbers of tourists. It should also be noted that niche market tourists are not necessarily high spenders (although many are). Therefore developing niche market tourism does not necessarily increase the average spend of tourists. However niche markets are good for diversifying the product, minimizing the effects of seasonality, and reducing pressure on “honey pot” areas by distributing tourists to lesser-visited places on the islands.

There is more here of a personal nature than the Royal Society needs, but also a review of my scientific work and recollections about some of the scientists I have met and worked with. ∗email: [email protected] 1 1 Introduction It is interesting to look back on one's life and career, recall some key memories, and try to assess the significance of one's contribution to science. My life has not been very eventful from the public's perspective. I'm little known outside a modest circle of theoretical physicists and some mathematicians, and have not appeared as a scientist on TV. I have hardly ever been interviewed by journalists, except once for Finnish radio when Stephen Hawking was unavailable. But I have had an interesting time in science, and most of my social life revolves around interactions with academic colleagues and graduate students. For over 30 years, family life has been with my wife Anneli Aitta and our son Ben. I am currently 65 and expect to retire in about two years. I would hope to be involved with research beyond retirement, and to keep writing articles and maybe another book. But I have had some health problems recently, so felt that it was a good time to start on this memoir.
