It has been observed that existing translation studies literature appears to cater mainly for long texts. This suggests that there may be a literature gap with regard to short text translation. Investigating how short texts are translated would reveal whether mainstream translation theories and strategies are also applicable to such texts. Therefore, the objectives of the paper are two-fold. Firstly, it seeks to confirm whether there is in fact a gap in the existing literature on short texts by reviewing corpuses of leading works in translation studies. Secondly, it investigates how short texts have been translated by examining the translation theories and strategies used. This is done by way of a case study on street names in Hong Kong. The case study also seeks to remedy the possible paucity of translation literature on short texts by building an objective and representative database to function as an effective platform for examining how street names have been translated. Data, including street names in English and Chinese, are collected by way of systematic sampling from the entire data population.

Seaward Department of Environmental Science, University of Bradford, Bradford, West Yorkshire BD7 1DP, United Kingdom Abstract. An annotated checklist of the lichens of Hong Kong, based on all available literature reports and specimens, including those recently collected by the authors, is presented. In total, 261 species are reported, of which 176 are new records for Hong Kong, 132 of which are new for China, 43 are new for East Asia, and 27 are new for Asia. The lichen vegetation is mainly tropical, as is shown by the distribution patterns of the identified species: 53 species are cosmopolitan, 40 northern temperate, 122 pantropical, 17 paleotropical and 29 endemic to tropical East Asia. With regard to substrata, 129 species are corticolous, 148 saxicolous, 17 foliicolous and 19 terricolous. Four species are newly described: Anisomeridium conorostratum Aptroot, A. hydei Aptroot, Caloplaca pulicarioides Aptroot and Placidiopsis poronioides Aptroot. The flora is rather poor in species; for example, no Caliciales have been found. In the past, the numbers of species of several groups such as the Graphidaceae, Heterodermia and Xanthoparmelia have been overestimated, whereas few pyrenocarps have been reported. The flora of wet granitic outcrops is surprisingly well developed in Hong Kong. Although not a single Peltula species was reported before, six species were identified, including one that was previously only known from Africa. In addition, several other cyanophilic genera are present, such as Euopsis, Psorotichia, Pyrenopsis and, most unexpectedly, Vestergrenopsis, each with one species.

Through the personal experiences of Stanley Kwan and those around him, this book gives such a voice to people whose lives have been profoundly affected by the dramatic changes, as Hong Kong transitioned from an entrepot to an international financial centre and from a colony to become a part of China. Wedged between the East and the West — the Dragon and the Crown — Stanley Kwan's life experiences reflect the forces pulling at Hong Kong. He was born into a traditional Chinese banking family but attended King's College under the British colonial system. Fired up by patriotism during the war, he joined the Nationalist Chinese army and served as an interpreter for American forces in southwest China. In 1 949, two of his brothers went to the Mainland to join the socialist revolution. Although tempted to join, he stayed in Hong Kong, worked for a British firm and became a "China watcher" at the American Consulate General. He finally joined a local Chinese bank — Hang Seng Bank where, as head of the Research Department, he launched the Hang Seng Index and witnessed the dramatic cycles of the Hong Kong economy. With the prospect of 1997, Stanley Kwan deliberated on his future and decided to retire to Canada in 1 984, joining the tide of immigrants from Hong Kong.

    Hong Kong’s Popular Entertainment 1. Introduction “Popular entertainment” can be defined as forms of entertainment that are accepted and enjoyed by most people in a society. Popular entertainment is intimately connected with people’s lives and forms part of their culture; its transformation reflects the changing times. Adhering to traditional customs and practice, the local Chinese had various traditional forms of entertainment, such as dragon dances, lion dances and outdoor Chinese opera, all of which were performed to celebrate the birthdays of deities. After the cession of Hong Kong to the British government in 1842, new and foreign forms of entertainment such as horseracing, football, movies and so on, reached its shores. In the beginning, such activities were partaken by Europeans and some Chinese, but they gradually became more widespread and eventually became part of the popular entertainment in Hong Kong. Hong Kong has seen many changes over the past 150 years⎯population increase, economic development, technological advancement, the transformation of its society and the growth of its commerce. In tandem with these changes is the evolution of Hong Kong’s popular entertainment, in terms of venues, programme content, games equipment, participation methods and so on. Several trends can be gleaned from observing these developments. Entertainment in Hong Kong is evolving from one that involves mass participation to one that engages the individual, and it is no longer something to be indulged in at one’s leisure but a consumer activity with commercial interests. In addition, tangible toys, which are played in real time and space, are being replaced by virtual games unfettered by physical constraints.
