Each unit contains a general educational goal, a series for behavior objectives designed to achieve the goal, and a number of learning experiences and accompanying resources intended to help children with particular types of handicaps experience music for purposes of learning about music itself, meeting certain physical, emotional, or psychological needs, and/or motivating and providing alternate ways of learning in other subject areas such as language arts. The learning experience section of each unit generally contains explicit, practical guidelines for the instructor to follow. Instructional units are provided for the following disability areas: emotionally disturbed, learning disabilities, brain injured, educable mentally retarded, trainable mentally retarded, communication disorders, blind, visually impaired, deaf and severely hard of hearing, and multiply handicapped. The instructional units are said to result from a conference on the role of music in thespecial education of handicapped children. Thank you for allowing us to show what we do and how we do it. Our program works for our situation in Winfield and we hope portions of it will work for your program. Let’s start with a song and then we will time warp into year one of our program. SONG – Prelude in E minor YEAR 1 – All those instruments The Winfield Band program, my philosophy has been that rhythm is the key to success. I tell all band students “You can learn the notes and fingerings fine, but without good rhythm, no one will understand what you are playing.” This is also true in folkloric music. Faster does not mean you are a better player. How well you communicate musically establishes your level of proficiency. Our first lessons with all band students are clapping exercises I design and lessons from the Goldenberg Percussion method book. Without the impedance of embouchure, fingerings and the thought of dropping a $500 instrument on the floor, the student becomes completely focused on rhythmic study. For the first percussion lesson, the focus is also rhythmic. Without the need for lips, we play hand percussion immediately. For the first Western rudiment, we play paradiddles on conga drums or bongos (PLAY HERE). All percussion students must say paradiddle while they play it.

    Irving Berlin “This Is the Life!” The Breakthrough Years: 1909–1921 by Rick Benjamin “Irving Berlin remains, I think, America’s Schubert.” —George Gershwin It was a perfect late summer evening in 2015. A crowd had gathered in the park of a small Pennsylvania town to hear the high-school band. I was there to support my trombonist son and his friends. The others were also mostly parents and relatives of “band kids,” with a sprinkling of senior citizens and dog walkers. As the band launched its “covers” of current pop hits toward the treetops, some in the crowd were only half-listening; their digital devices were more absorbing. But then it happened: The band swung into a new tune, and the mood changed. Unconsciously people seemed to sit up a bit straighter. There was a smattering of applause. Hands and feet started to move in time with the beat. The seniors started to sing. One of those rare “public moments” was actually happening. Then I realized what the band was playing—“God Bless America.” Finally, here was something solid—something that resonated, even with these teenaged performers. The singing grew louder, and the performance ended with the biggest applause of the night. “God Bless America” was the grandest music of the concert, a mighty oak amongst the scrub. Yet the name of its creator—Irving Berlin—was never announced. It didn’t need to be. A man on a bench nearby said to me, “I just love those Irving Berlin songs.” Why is that, anyway? And how still? Irving Berlin was a Victorian who rose to fame during the Ragtime Era.
