“Seeds of faith are always within us; sometimes it takes a crisis to nourish and encourage their growth.”- Susan L. Taylor

Hello to all RCCPC Rotarians & Spouses! Tonight, I wish and hope that everything is well and warm in spite of the crisis that we are facing at the present time. As of March 29, 2020, there have been 1,418 confirmed cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the Philippines. Out of these cases, 71 deaths and 42 recoveries were recorded. The largest single-day increase in the number of confirmed cases was on March 29, when 343 new cases were announced.

The first case was confirmed on January 30, that of a 38-year-old Chinese woman who was confined in the San Lazaro Hospital in . The second case was confirmed on February 2, that of a 44-year-old Chinese man who died a day earlier, which was also the first confirmed death from the disease outside mainland China.

The first case of someone with no travel history abroad was confirmed on March 5, a 62- year-old male who frequented a Muslim prayer hall in San Juan, Metro Manila, raising suspicions that a community transmission of COVID-19 is already underway in the Philippines. The man's wife was confirmed to have contracted COVID-19 on March 7, which was also the first local transmission to be confirmed.

Impact on Economy

On March 9, 2020, the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) index lost 457.77 points or 6.76%, its steepest decline since the financial crisis of 2007–08. The following day, shares plunged by 6.23% to ₱5,957.35, settling below the 6,000 level benchmark and entering bear market territory. The mining and oil industries were the most affected with a 9.05% drop, followed by holding companies with 6.93% drop. The PSE's circuit breaker mechanism was invoked for the second time since the measure's introduction in 2008 halting trade for 15 minutes.

The retail industry in the Philippines was affected by the pandemic. According to the Philippine Retailers Association, the "total retail environment" saw a decline of 30% to 50%. SM Investments, the country's largest retailer, saw a decline of 10% to 20% in domestic sales. PORTSIDE CLUB BULLETIN

The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines estimates that around 7,000 people may lose jobs within the first half of 2020 due to the pandemic. This followed Philippine Airlines' decision to lay off 300 of its workers due to losses caused by the pandemic. Philippines AirAsia also dropped its plan to debut in the PSE within 2020 and decided to focus on expanding its domestic operations after government ban on China and South Korea which threatened 30% of its revenue. Employees of Pacific, the country's largest airline, compromised on a pay cut amounting to 10% in order to avoid layoffs. However, Cebu Pacific eventually laid off over 150 cabin crew personnel near the end of the first quarter as more countries and provinces in the Philippines implemented travel restrictions, affecting its flights.

The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) revised its economic growth outlook for the Philippines in 2020 from a 6.5% to 7.5% gross domestic product (GDP) growth registered in late 2019, to a 5.5% to 6.5% GDP growth, following the pandemic. The NEDA cited the decline in service exports, especially tourism. Moody's Analytics also reduced its GDP growth outlook for the country, from 5.9% in 2019 to 4.9% following the pandemic.

Filing of income tax returns was extended to May 15 from April 15 by the Bureau of Internal Revenue.

Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella issued Executive Order No. 064 declaring under Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) and took effect last Saturday, March 28, 2020 at 12:01 in the afternoon. The purpose of the ECQ is to limit the number of people on the streets in a bid to counter the continued spread of the dreaded coronavirus disease (Covid-19). While life in Cebu City may not be the same for the next 30 days, the public is advised to stay calm, stay at home and keep the faith stronger than fear.

Last Monday, March 23, 2020, at 9:00 in the evening, we had a mock online meeting using the Zoom App media. We had discussed the Key Performance Indicators for the Rotary Year 2019-2020 and other upcoming activities that we need to be done. Aside from that, we talked also on how we can help to our front liners in the barangay level to combat the Covid-19. My appreciation and thanks to the following Rotarians who participated in the online meeting, to wit: 1. Pres. Jun Falcon, 2. Treas. John Sulay, 3. DITO Jeff Tan, 4. PP Sam Tiu, 5. Rtn. Lester delos Santos and yours truly.

Meanwhile, our PORTSIDE E-bulletin will still be posted at our Viber Group and the District Website at www.rotarydistrict3860.com. We encourage all members to post your concerns and suggestions in our Viber Group account. Online interactions thru social media or group chats in the meantime will be adopted in lieu of actual physical meetings. PORTSIDE CLUB BULLETIN

According to Naval Ravikant, “Doctors won’t make you healthy. Nutritionists won’t make you slim. Teachers won’t make you smart. Gurus won’t make you calm. Mentors won’t make you rich. Trainers won’t make you fit. Ultimately, you have to take responsibility. Save yourself."

That’s all for now, stay safe and healthy my dear RCCPC Rotarians to flatten the curve.

God bless us all! PORTSIDE CLUB BULLETIN

President’s Message – March 2020 Today in 1945, After suffering heavy losses, the 182nd U.S. Infantry Regiment stages an assault on Go Chan Hill near Cebu City. By dusk, the area is cleared of Japanese soldiers.

We are now on Enhance Community Quarantine or ECQ! The move started by Cebu City at noontime of 28 March 2020 followed by Lapu-lapu City at 12AM of 29 March 2020, which eventually declared by City and the entire province of Cebu effecting 12AM of 30 March 2020. At this moment of crisis, let us not forget our respective responsibilities and obligations most especially to help our government stop spreading the virus. A good option to many, the rationale of ECQs and those not exempted to go out, is to stay at home and keep safe from contamination/infection.

Though confronted by this physical challenge, let us support our Rotary club in spreading kindness during this coronavirus outbreak. Let us do in every way we can extend to help our community even through online collaboration. Cheers to PP Edward Go for the 2 units of 20-footer container (to quarantine people) and PAG/PP Boy Unabia for 10gallons of alcohol to Don Vicente Sotto Hospital and production of PPE initiated by the District.

ONLINE ROTARY MEETING Last Monday, 23 March 2020, Sec. Jensen Racho invited each one and used Zoom App for an online meeting. Though, there were only few who made the actual connection but it was indeed successful. With much appreciation to the participants, the Zoom meeting was hosted by Sec. Jensen Racho, and joined by Treas. John Sulay, Dir. Jeff Tan, PP Sam Tio, Rot. Lester de los Santos, and yours truly. Informal discussions – among other items- were focused on RCCPC’s Club Balance Scorecard. From there, we noted that our Club is already on its right track towards achieving RCCPC’s full commitment to Gov. Philip Tan.

Another discussion we had in Zoom was on its use to the fullest, changing its background, and how to share individual files & desktop screen. We are hoping that RCCPC members can install Zoom on their phone or computer so that we can already have online regular meeting. The good thing about Zoom App is that - it is just like a meeting room where each one can join and enter the chatroom one by one, at anytime during the meeting. There is a meeting ID number that the host (Sec. Jensen was the one hosting it last Monday) can share to each one for log-in purpose. Let us know if you need help in installing Zoom App (to your phone or computer) and Sec. Jensen Racho, Jeffrey Tan or myself can assist you on it. Zoom can be downloaded online thru: https://zoom.us/download or you can search it in your Google PlayStore (for Android users) and iStore (for Apple users). PORTSIDE CLUB BULLETIN
