    COMMUNICATION TRADE ROUTES AND HIGHWAYS At the opening of the seventeenth century, there were no metalled roads in the district, though the main routes of land travel were clearly defined by avenues of trees and occasional rest-houses, known as serais. The travelers and merchants could pass the night in comfort and comparative security within their walled enclosures. These roads were of beaten earth and connected the district with the adjoining regions. However they were used only in the dry season. The whole district seems to have been traversed by a network of such roads. These roads connected the district with Basti, Faizabad, Azamgarh, Deoria and Ballia. Gorakhpur was a chief garrison town on the north of Ghaghra in the medieval period. Roads which were unmetalled connected it with Bihar and the adjoining areas. To know what transport would be like in the district of the seventeenth century or an earlier period, one may have to picture to oneself trains of ox- coaches (raths) and ox-carts (bahlis) with hammocks attached to the vehicles for carrying fodder for the animals, as well as small luggage, with a posse of horses ridden by middle class people and palanquins (palki) used by the elites or caravans of oxen, ponies and other pack animals laden with goods and flanked by foot-pilots. There were no bridges one the rivers which had to be crossed by means of ferry boats. The carts and wagons were fastened to boats by the wheel and the pole. The oxen and the horses swimming all the while, goods had to be unloaded before the pack-animals were driven into the rivers for negotiating their waters.

    HISTORY ANCIENT PERIOD In the epic period, the region covered by the present district of Gorakhpur, known as Karapatha, which formed part of the kingdom of Kosala, an important centre of Aryan culture and civilization. The renowned ascetic Gorakh Nath gave name and fame to this district by practicing austerities on the spot where the famous temple named after him stands. It appears that the earliest known monarch ruling over this region with his capital at Ayodhya, was Iksvaku, who founded the solar dynasty of Ksatriyas. It produced a number of illustrious kings till the accession of Ram, who was the greatest ruler of this dynasty. Ram had divided the kingdom, during his lifetime, into small principalities. He coronated his eldest son Kusa as the king of Kusavati present Kushinagar which lay in the Gorakhpur district till 1946. After Ram's renunciation of the world Kusa left Kusawati (Kushinagar) and repaired to Ayodhya. His cousin, Chandraketu, son of Lakshmana, even the epithet of malla (valiant) in the Ramayan, thereupon took possession of this region. The Mahabharata mentions that at the Rajasuya (imperial) sacrifice performed by Yudhisthira, a behest to conquer the east was given to Bhimasena who in turn subjugated the principality of Gopalak (identified with Gopalpur of Bansgaon tahsil). Close to Gopalpur at Bhimtola, Bhimasena is said to have reposed after his victory. The discovery of a series of enormous mounds at Gopalpur and around it suggests that the places has been old sites of extensive cities. A few development in the political history of the district during the post- Mahabharata period is the functioning of a number of republics under the sovereignty of the kingdom of Kosala.

In the present study, the development of a statistical yield forecast model has been carried out for sugarcane production over Gorakhpur district using weather variables of crop growing season and past observed yield data for the period of 1971 to 2010. The study shows that this type of statistical yield forecast model could efficiently forecast yield 5 weeks and even 10 weeks in advance of the harvest for sugarcane within acceptable limit of error.The performance of the model in predicting yields at district level for sugarcane crop is found quite satisfactory for both validation (2007 and 2008) as well as forecasting (2009 and 2010). In addition to the above study, the climate variability of the area has also been studied and hence, the data series was tested for Mann Kendall Rank Statistical Test. The maximum and minimum temperatures were found to be significant with opposite trends (decreasing trend in maximum and increasing in minimum temperature) while other three are found insignificant with different trends (rainfall and evening time relative humidity with increasing trend andmorning time relative humidity with decreasing trend).

The suggestions, comments & queries of general public in this regard are most welcome by the concerned office. 3 | P a g e PREFACE The Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India, made Environmental Clearance (EC) for mining of minerals mandatory through its Notification of 27th January, 1994 under the provisions of Environment Protection Act, 1986. Keeping in view the experience gained in environmental clearance process over a period of one decade, the MoEFCC came out with Environmental Impact Notification, SO 1533 (E), dated 14th September 2006. It has been made mandatory to obtain environmental clearance for different kinds of development projects as listed in Schedule-1 of the Notification. Further, In pursuance to the order of Hon’ble Supreme Court dated the 27th February, 2012 in I.A. Studies in Fungi 2(1), 92–105, Doi 10.5943/sif/2/1/11 Abstract The present study deals with the status of macrofungal diversity in Gorakhpur district and its distribution pattern. The macrofungal survey was undertaken during 2011-2014 in different localities of Gorakhpur district. A total of 114 species of macrofungi belonging to 58 genera and 33 families were collected and identified in to 31 edible species, 10 excellent edible species, 68 inedible species and 5 poisonous species. Agaricaceae family was found to be the dominant representing 18 species. Distribution of macrofungal species in different localities of Gorakhpur district was also evaluated on the basis of Shannon diversity index, Simpson diversity index and evenness. Highest Shannon diversity index, Simpson diversity index and evenness were found to be 3.61, 0.97 and 0.90 respectively in Sahjanwan tehsil. The results indicate a very high species richness of the study site. Macrofungi occupy important place in the biodiversity of India.
