While broadly examining popular music, the primary focus ofthis study is on black popular music making and hip hop cultures in Canada and Greece. My dissertation focuses upon three distinct case studies in Toronto, Canada; Athens, Greece; and Vancouver, Canada. Each ofthe three case studies in my dissertation contributes, and offers revisions, to Bourdieusian studies ofcultural production. Whether it is DJs in Toronto trying to assert authorship and legitimate their roles as musicians, an MC in Vancouver trying to conceptualize a new mode ofdiasporic belonging for Greeks ofthe diaspora, or male hip hop practitioners in Athens utilizing their historical knowledge ofthe Greek field of popular music to authenticate their pursuits in rap music, each case study provides a different lens through which to understand how popular music makers use music in their quests for cultural legitimacy, diasporic belonging and/or authentication.

To Jam or Not to Jam: The Labour of Improvisation and Discourses of Authenticity in Popular Music. For many rock critics, determinations of musical authenticity have often depended on the degree of apparent physical effort—the labour—of performance because of its seeming naturalness, allowance for spontaneity and concomitant privileging of live performance. These qualities are contrasted with the ostensible predictability, lack of effort, unnaturalness and, thus, inauthenticity of music whose prominent use of technology situates its origins more obviously in recording studio creations. Simon Frith (among others) has critiqued such assumptions, however, arguing that not only does technology not subvert the authenticity of live music, but such claims of authenticity are fundamentally flawed: what is important in rock music is, instead, the semblance rather than actuality of spontaneity and of the labour that seemingly constitutes it. Among the constituents of one rock sub-genre, however, that of jam-bands, the importance of making each performance unique through genuine collective improvisation (rather than its mere appearance) involving musicians and audience members, both within and between songs, is fundamental. This paper argues that the significance of such musical labour reflects the genre's essential stylistic hybridity: mixing highly experimental musical practices with popular forms and audience dancing as the expression of the collective autonomy of a self-conscious countercultural community. The value of such an account is in undermining the widespread view of the inherent opposition of rock practices to dance and other overtly technophilic music and, instead, acknowledging the significant connections between them—as the work of many contemporary musicians who combine rock instrumentation with the rhythms and textures of electronic dance music demonstrates.

This past week, Staff Photographer Kevin Legge and Senior Editor Harrison Samphir had the invaluable opportunity of speaking with some of Winnipeg’s most exciting entrepreneurs – those artisanal coffee- house proprietors who are bringing speciality java to our city at a fair price, and with an inspiring man- date. The thoughts they shared, and the shots Kevin took, are remarkable. At the time of this writing, five (count it, five) independent cafés have opened here in the last two years, the latest being Little Sister Coffee Maker in the Osborne village. These aren’t just stopgaps, either, providing a quick cup of imper- sonal joe; they are convivial spaces of conversation, local art and design, and provide a product that can be traced directly to the source.
