Drip it like it’s hot... This past week, Staff Photographer Kevin Legge and Senior Editor Harrison Samphir had the invaluable opportunity of speaking with some of Winnipeg’s most exciting entrepreneurs – those artisanal coffee- house proprietors who are bringing speciality java to our city at a fair price, and with an inspiring man- date. The thoughts they shared, and the shots Kevin took, are remarkable. At the time of this writing, five (count it, five) independent cafés have opened here in the last two years, the latest being Little Sister Coffee Maker in the Osborne Village. These aren’t just stopgaps, either, providing a quick cup of imper- sonal joe; they are convivial spaces of conversation, local art and design, and provide a product that can be traced directly to the source. Beat Reporter Martyna Turczynowicz took it upon herself to add stylist and model to her ever expand- ing resume with a fall fashion photo shoot featur- ing looks from Para Mix, while Arts & Culture Editor Jared Story spoke with local comedian Jordan Wel- wood, one of eight Canadian comics vying for the title of SiriusXM’s Canada’s Next Top Comic. You’ll also find a slew of other great pieces about strip clubs, Bronies, virtual reality, student unions, on the cover and peace, as well as interviews with Braids and Kevin Legge photographs Jae-Sung Chon at MAKE M-Kaps conducted by Arts Reporter Deborah Remus. Originally formed in 2011, Yes We Mystic is a five- piece folk rock band from Winnipeg. Its sound is at once sombre and yet variably forceful – the introspective vocals of Adam Fuhr oscillate between brooding and spirited, while the eclectic instru- mentation of Keegan Steele (mandolin, ukulele, percussion), Solana Johannson (violin), Katherine Walker-Jones (banjo) and Zachary Rempel (cello) provide diverse crescendos and energy. On Floods and Fires, the dynamic shifting of tones is mostly successful. Fuhr quietly muses “When we look back to what is here/And what is not/I see the monu- ment/Whose time you say has come” on “These Roads”, after which a burst of violin and drums inject life and rhythm to completely transform the song. This five-track affair is merely a sample, YES WE MYSTIC though. Look for more Yes We Mystic in the coming Floods and Fires EP months. Head in the Sand Records - Harrison Samphir

To stop any Black Keys/White Stripes comparisons before they start - the Young Pixels are more in line with the Pixies’ Black Francis/Kim Deal, if they didn’t hate each other, had kids and lived on an organic farm near Brandon, Manitoba. This 13-track effort from the duo of Danny and Tricia Turner was produced by Mike Posthumus (Sebastian Owl) and features the stripped down set-up of guitar and drums that sounds like a full band, mostly due to the Turner clan’s dual vocals fleshing things out. Danny takes the lead on the first few while Tricia oohs and ahs, with such standouts as “Pollution Breath” allowing her to shine. The lyrics paint a realistic picture of a relationship - the good, the bad and what happens while you’re making other plans. It’s honest almost to a fault, and that’s what makes THE YOUNG PIXELS it so great. A real love-rock record by real rockers For the Love in love. Autumn is here and for many that means it’s time to get back to work or school, so why not start fresh and revamp your fall wardrobe? Para Mix – a women’s clothing boutique located in the heart of the Osborne Village – is known for its eclectic clothing and unique styles, with many one of a kind pieces. This fall, Winnipeg fashion is all about mixing comfort and style. “Comfy sweaters and harem pants and a lot crop tops too,” Para Mix’s Jesse Vestner, 23, says of the top choices at the store this fall. “Everything is super comfortable, not as many restricting clothes.” Vestner says the relaxed attire is a welcome change from the more restraining clothing that was all the rage recently. She says her two favourite fash- ions this fall are: “The harem pants – feels like pajama pants all day – and the giant sweaters.” Vestner says when it comes to stylish new duds, Winnipeg women aren’t, well, duds. “I’ve been told while traveling that Winnipeg has the most fashionable girls,” Vestner says. “Any time I travel in Canada, that’s what people tell me.”

Around the year 850, a young shepherd named Kaldi was traversing the Ethiopian Highlands when he noticed his goats acting erratically – so spirited, in fact, they could not sleep at night. Kaldi quickly concluded that his herd had been munching on berries from a strange tree and so reported his findings to the abbot of a local monastery. Eat Like You Give a Damn: about the employees

The production and consumption of food is one way to begin to appreciate the incredible diversity of ethnicity and culture present in the UWinnipeg community and its surrounding neighbourhoods.
