Bali 1928: Gamelan Gong Kebyar Music from Belaluan, Pangkung, Busungbiu 2 Introduction 6 A Sketch of the Time Period of these Recordings 11 Emergence of Kebyar 29 The Balinese Gamelan Recordings from Bali, 1928: a track–by–track discussion: 33 Gamelan Gong Kebyar of Belaluan, Denpasar 46 Gamelan Gong Kebyar of Pangkung, Tabanan 50 Gamelan Gong Kebyar of Busungbiu, Northwest Bali 57 List of Silent Archival Films 58 Acknowledgments 61 References Cited and Further Readings * Glossary on Separate PDF File1 1 The spellings in this article follow modernized Balinese orthography of dictionaries such as Kamus Bali Indonesia, by I Nengah Medera et.al. (1990). Although this system was proposed as early as 1972 it has been applied irregularly in writings on the arts, but we have chosen to adhere to it so as to reflect a closer relationship to actual Balinese aksara ‘letters of the alphabet, language’. For instance, many words with prefixes frequently spelled pe or peng are spelled here with the prefixes pa and pang. 1 Introduction These historic recordings were made in 1928 as part of a collection of the first and only commercially–released recordings of music made in Bali prior to World War II. This diverse sampling of new and older Balinese styles appeared on 78 rpm discs in 1929 with subsequent releases for international distribution. The records were sold worldwide (or not sold, as it happened) and quickly went out of print. It was a crucial time in the island’s musical history as Bali was in the midst of an artistic revolution with kebyar as the new dominant style of music.

  • The Perception and Cognition of Time in Balinese Music
Empirical Musicology Review Vol. 3, No. 2, 2008 The Perception and Cognition of Time in Balinese Music ANDREW CLAY MCGRAW[1] University of Richmond ABSTRACT: This article describes experiments designed to determine the perception and cognition of time-in-music among Balinese gamelan musicians. Three topics are discussed. First, the proposed connections between cultural/religious concepts of time and the construction of (time in) gamelan music are explored. Here a novel and experimental use of the Implicit Association Test is incorporated to explore potential implicit (unconscious) connections between concepts of time-in-music and time-in- general. Only weak associations are found. Second, the author explores music’s influence in subjects’ ability to gauge objective durations. Other than a tendency for Balinese subjects to consistently underestimate actual timings, and the potential for tempo changes to influence response patterns in specific ways, few strong patterns are found. Third, previously proposed models for the performance of tempo changes (here, rallentandos) are explored in the context of gamelan music. Results from perceptual tasks and an analysis of performance suggests that previous idealized models are too simplistic to describe the Balinese case. Submitted 2007 December 18; accepted 2007 February 2. KEYWORDS: Bali, gamelan, time, perception, cognition THE conflation, common in musicology and anthropology, of time-in-music with time-in-general (or, time in cosmological senses) invites all sorts of well-documented problems and paradoxes (see Rowell, 1979, 1985; Mayr, 1985). Given too much time to ponder it, we are easily over-stimulated by certain eccentric truths concerning time: Definitions of time are impossible as nothing resembles it.

  • Innovation and Change in Approaches to Balinese Gamelan Composition
42 Malaysian Journal of Music Vol. 9(42-54) ISSN 2600-9366, eISSN 2600-9331 Innovation and Change in Approaches to Balinese Gamelan Composition I Komang Sudirga Music Department, Faculty of Performing Arts Institut Seni Indonesia, Denpasar Jalan Nusa Indah, Sumerta, Denpasar, Bali, 80235 e-mail: [email protected] *Corresponding author: [email protected] Published: 10 September 2020 Cite this article (APA): Sudirga, I. K. (2020). Innovation and change in approaches to Balinese Gamelan composition, Malaysian Journal of Music, 9, 42-54. https://doi.org/10.37134/mjm.vol9.4.2020 Abstract This article addresses newly developed approaches to gamelan composition among Balinese composers by focusing on changes and innovations within tradition. Balinese composers today represent a cross-section of arts communities who collectively have produced some of the most innovative gamelan compositions in nearly half a century. Subjected to increasingly cosmopolitan reviews from both conservative and progressive audiences, these composers encapsulate the shifting ideals of a generation who value new aesthetic paradigms that increasingly diverge from the history, tradition and legacy of their traditional Balinese predecessors. In the fiercely competitive world of gamelan group rivalry, struggles and triumphs between contemporary composers have always seen creative boundaries pushed to their limits. I examine some of these triumphs and limitations by examining the creative output of six representative Balinese composers who contend with innovation and its reception in local contexts. I argue that innovations in gamelan serve as benchmarks that demarcate creative spaces and approaches while simultaneously testing the real-world confines of changing traditions. Keywords: Balinese gamelan, contemporary composition, cultural matrices, innovation Introduction Audiences who support new compositions may feel confident that the presentation of contemporary music can, at the view least, provide some new ideas and innovations to existing music traditions.

  • Music As Episteme, Text, Sign & Tool: Comparative Approaches To
I would like to dedicate this work firstly to Sue Achimovich, my mother, without whose constant support I wouldn’t have been able to have jumped across the abyss and onto the path; I would also like to dedicate the work to Dr Saskia Kersenboom who gave me the light and showed me the way; Finally I would like to dedicate the work to both Patrick Eecloo and Guy De Mey who supported me when I could have fallen over the edge … This edition is also dedicated to Jaak Van Schoor who supported me throughout the creative process of this work. Foreword This work has been produced thanks to more than four years of work. The first years involved a great deal of self- questioning; moving from being an active creative artist—a composer and performer of experimental music- theatre—to being a theoretician has been a long journey. Suffice to say, on the gradual process which led to the ‘composition’ of this work, I went through many stages of looking back at my own creative work to discover that I had already begun to answer many of the questions posed by my new research into Balinese culture, communicating remarkable information about myself and the way I’ve attempted to confront my world in a physically embodied fashion. My early academic experiments, attending conferences and writing papers, involved at first largely my own compositional work. What I realise now is that I was on a journey towards developing a system of analysis which would be based on both artistic and scientific information, where ‘subjective’ experience would form an equally valid ‘product’ for analysis: it is, after all, only through our own personal experience that we can interface with the world.

The Balinese have been readily praised for their ability to borrow whatever foreign influence suits them while nevertheless maintaining their identity over the centuries. Today, there is no dearth of observers to claim that the Balinese have adjusted to the tourist invasion of their island just as in the past—taking advantage of the appeal of their cultural traditions to foreign visitors without sacrificing their own values on the altar of monetary profit. The following quotation should suffice as an example of such an established conviction: The Balinese seem to be coping with the tourist invasion as well as they have coped with others, that is they are taking what they want, but they are not allowing them *This article is a revised version of a paper given at the International Workshop on Indonesian Studies, Bali nese State and Society: Historical, Textual and Anthropological Approaches, held at the Royal Institute of Linguistics and Anthropology (KITLV), Leiden, April 21-24, 1986. It is based on research undertaken in Bali during 1981 and 1982.
