Voices of the Electric Guitar Don Curnow MPA 475 12-12-12 Intro The solid body electric guitar is the result of many guitars and innovations that came before it, followed by the guitar's need for volume to compete with louder instruments, particularly when soloing. In the 1930s, jazz and its various forms incorporated the guitar, but at the time there was no way for an acoustic guitar to compete with the volume of a trumpet or saxophone, let alone with an orchestra of trumpets and saxophones, such as in big band jazz. As a result, amplification of the guitar was born and the electric guitar has been evolving since, from a hollow bodied ES-150 arch-top with a pick-up used by Charlie Christian to the Les Paul played by Slash today.

Dyer Symphony Harp Plectral Family from Dyer extant specimens The Cadenza, 1917-1918 1 Foreword Though the sight of the unusual instrument may be familiar to harp guitar aficionados and fans of fretted instruments built by the Larson brothers, its history has remained little understood. Indeed, the story of the Dyer harp mandolin has been one of those musical instrument histories that seemed destined to perpetually remain “to be determined.” There were always simply too many unanswered questions. For example, when I first wrote online on the subject in 2002, there wasn’t a single harp mandola known. Neither could we then confirm – let alone explain – the existence of the “backwards 1908 harp mandolin.” By 2018, after the discovery of a late 1907 W. J. Dyer & Bro. catalog along with many additional instrument discoveries (we have now found five harp mandolas!), things started to fall into place.

  • Archtop Build Journal
Archtop Build Journal By Mike Conner Fifth Edition © September 2016 Archtop Build Journal Forward I have played guitar for over 40 years now, worked as an engineer for 34 years, and a woodworker for at least 30 years. These combine d to drive a strong interest in instrument construction, especially guitars, mandolins and upright basses. Having read, studied and thought about these instruments for many years, we now have been blessed with the opportunity to attempt to build some from scratch. It would have been easier to build from a kit. Since I have done hundreds of guitar setups and built much of the furniture, cabinets and even our front door in our home, it seemed like a great challenge to build instruments starting from the milled lumber. We humbly submit this journal detailing much of the process used to build a guitar and octave mandolin in the hope that it will help others understand how to build an instrument in a home shop primarily with normal woodworking tools. This project would not have been possible without the many blessings God has granted us. With some modest abilities, reasonable resources, a shop full of tools, and the love and patience of a wonderful bride I was able to fulfill a life-long dream.
