Over the summer a reader sent me a letter complimenting the News-Banner staff on this year’s “Who We Are” mag- azine. She wanted to share her thoughts on several stories that were published and asked if Street Fair officials were Jessica still considering naming a grand mar- shal. Bricker I asked the question, which led to the idea that led to Saturday’s story. It was a simple question posed on the News-Banner’s Facebook page and wasn’t associated with fair officials (therefore it’s not an official contest; it was just a fun way to get people involved) — If you were to nominate someone for the honor of grand marshal, who would it be and why? I compiled most of the answers and published them. There were several responses and some were repeated. In response to one nomination that was repeated by more than one poster, I immediately thought of another related nomination. But I’m getting ahead of myself. To recap Saturday’s story, first responders and essential workers in general received numerous “nominations.” There were also a few for Pam Vanderkolk and the staff of the Bluffton Parks Department. Such an honor would certainly be deserved, as they do so much for the commu- nity and have adapted programming this year during the pandemic. The staff’s work is noted across the state and has gained attention across the country. They are also a fan favorite during the Street Fair Hypocrisy and constitutional etiquette opening night parade for their floats. We are lucky to have Pam and her staff in Wells Coun- Sen.
