    Technical Note – TN 003: 2018 For queries regarding this document [email protected] www.transport.nsw.gov.au Technical Note – TN 003: 2018 Issue date: 23 August 2018 Effective date: 23 August 2018 Subject: Turnout speeds and crossing selection This technical note is issued by the Asset Standards Authority (ASA) as an update to ESC 250 Turnouts and Special Trackwork, version 4.8 to restrict the design speed through higher speed turnouts and crossovers, provide restrictions on the use of certain crossing types and correct some typographical errors. Higher speed turnouts, when used in a crossover or a reversing curve situation without transitions, can result in higher maintenance requirements and increased passenger discomfort. Swing nose and spring wing crossings are permitted to be used with tangential turnouts, but due to whole-of-life costs considerations, restrictions on their use have been expanded. The updates include amendments to Section 6.1.5 as follows: 1. Section 6.1.5 Crossings Replace the contents of Section 6.1.5 with the following: The selection of turnouts is dependent upon the criteria for crossing rates and crossing types. For crossing rate see Section 6.1.5.1 and for crossing type see Section 6.1.5.2. 1.1. Section 6.1.5.1 Selection of crossing rate The selection of the crossing rate shall be based on the geometric design of the turnout and the associated limiting speeds of the mainline and turnout roads. Turnout speeds shall be determined by applying design standards for track geometry detailed in ESC 210 Track Geometry and Stability.

Abstract: India’s population has skyrocketed to about 122 crores .In such a scenario a high speed train technology for a swift transportation of the ever-increasing population is required .Not only speed is the sole aim but passenger safety, comfort and punctuality in railways is the need of the hour. Indian railways are subjected to regular delays in their railway setup. This comparative study focuses on various already existing high speed train technologies across four major countries of Japan, France , Germany and South Korea. The break-through was made by Japan by introducing Shinkansen (Bullet Trains) followed by the French Train Grande Vitesse. Germany and South Korea too followed the French by introducing Inter City Express and Korea Train Express respectively. Since the development of high-speed train technology in India is still in the beginning phase, the study also analyses its future in India. The study is also based on the existing setup and technology of Indian railways and gives some recommendations. A main driver for the high maintenance costs is the need to repair and replace switch rails and crossings as these components are subjected to a severe load environment. Dynamic wheel{rail contact forces with high magnitudes are often generated in the switch and crossing panels due to the discontinuities in rail profiles, resulting in a degradation of track geometry. One critical contribution to the track geometry degradation is track settlement.
