To make room for Duke, right-handed pitcher Jose Lopez was designated for assignment. Duke, who will turn 36 in April, agreed to terms with Cincinnati on Feb. 2. The club will get added veteran presence in its bullpen. He is a 14-year Major League veteran. In 72 games combined for the Twins and Mariners last season, Duke was 5-5 with a 4.15 ERA and 1.50 WHIP. Over 52 innings, he allowed 57 hits including one home run with 21 walks and 51 strikeouts. Left-handed hitters batted .220 against him, compared to .311 by right-handed hitters. But the Reds do not view the ground-ball pitcher as a one-out left-handed situational reliever. "He's a guy that likes to pitch a full inning and expects to be in there to pitch a full inning," Reds president of baseball operations Dick Williams said. "He's had a lot of success against lefties, but we are comfortable that he's not necessarily going to be a one-out guy." Duke is returning to the Reds after pitching for them during the 2013 season, a stint that helped turn his career around after being released by the Nationals earlier that year.

It’s especially tough in the 21st century with pitchers working on four days’ rest and getting 35 or fewer starts. But it wasn’t a given in the mid-20th cen- tury when a bigger strike zone, no DH and four-man rotations increased the odds of a 20-win season for a capable starter. Some of the best-known Sox pitchers of modern times have not won 20 while working on the South Side – Mark Buehrle, Tommy John, Joel Horlen. Instead, some surprising names reached that pitching bench- mark like Ray Herbert, Esteban Loaiza and Jim Kaat. Herbert connects to the great Sox pitching staff of the 1960s. “Excellent” is the word that best describes a group that lead the American League in ERA Ray Herbert warming up at Comiskey Park during in four of five seasons between 1963 his surprise 20-win season in 1962 . Whether your big league team is competing for a division title or the first overall draft pick, there is always a minor league team and several prospects in every organization worth following. There is always someone to dream on, and in that way, it keeps that often short-lived spring optimism alive year-round. While minor league coverage is increasing constantly, it is still difficult to get involved cold. Here is your preview on all four minor league affiliates and the most notable prospects at each level. Every player in the system is above the Mensa level of baseball talent in the world. It feels insulting to leave out most players or to summarize an impact prospect in three inches of a column. On the other hand, this preview is 21 pages long and nearly 6500 words. I have not seen every player in this report with my own eyes, but I have seen a few of them. I relied on scouting reports from Baseball Prospectus, Baseball America, John Sickels, and other contacts I have made in prospect dialogue.     New Approaches F to Historical Pitcher Evaluation Using DRA In 2001, Voros McCracken published an article at baseballprospectus.com in which he introduced to the public the idea that pitchers have surprisingly little control over the outcomes of at-bats, excluding strikeouts and home runs, or “batting average on balls in play” (“BABIP”). McCracken found that there was an extremely low correlation in each pitcher’s BABIP from year to year, and that most long-term BABIP rates for pitchers were very similar. Veteran baseball analyst Craig Wright immediately identifi ed two particular groups of pitchers that tend to have noticeably lower BABIP (extreme fl y ball pitchers and knuckleball pitchers), but praised McCracken as “… the guy who really got people to understand that most folks overestimate the pitch- er’s ability to infl uence the number of hits that result from balls batted into the fi eld of play.” In contrast, McCracken found that walk, strikeout, and, to a lesser extent, home run rates of each pitcher were far more consistent year-to-year and varied greatly over long periods of time from pitcher to pitcher. McCracken therefore proposed that pitchers should be evaluated by the statistics over which they have the most control, that are “independent” of the quality of the defenses behind them — strikeouts, walks, and home runs. McCracken developed a method for converting these elements directly into another sta- tistic, scaled the same as ERA, that he called Defense Independent Pitching Statistics (“DIPS”). Okay. Thank you.” • Likes to be the engineer of the “round the horn” throw around and takes pride in his snap throw to the shortstop • Helps to “manage” the pitcher (motions to him to slow down or calm down, or directly tells him to do certain things, “hey, roll us a pair,” etc.) • Takes great pride in his ability to pick ANY bad throw in the dirt • Acknowledges that he is the anchor that keeps players close at first base and establishes an awareness for how much is too much • Lives for the pick-off tag and the back door pick when playing behind the runner • Understands and executes his role as the trailer on balls hit to the gap • Is vocal in taking the cut in the slot by making his presence known (giving a target with two hands up) and then always opens up to the glove side or in being the trailer in covering second base on a “sure double” • Works on jumping to catch the high throw, coming off the bag to the inside and making the tag, and diving to block an errant throw to prevent the overthrow • Meets the throw from the infielder while maintaining contact with the bag then pushes off to “sell” the out • Asks for timeout and initiates a mound visit in situations where the pitcher or the
