Kindle at Your Library

Check out FREE for your Kindle!

(You must have an account with and a registered Kindle device orKindle app for PC, Mac, Android, iPhone, iPad, iPod, Blackberry or Windows Phone 7.)

Here’s how:

Go to the library’s website at www.daytonmetrolibrary.org

Click on the Downloadables link: (Found on the upper right side of the site.)

Select items to check out in the Kindle format.

Basic Search

Use the search box at the top of the page to find a specific item by typing a search term in the search box. Click on the magnifying glass.

When the results are returned, click on the ‘Kindle Books’ filter on the left side of the page.

Advanced Search

If you would like to browse all of the ebooks available in the Kindle format you can click on Advanced Search.

1. Select Kindle as the format. 2. If you only want to see titles currently available for check out, click on ‘Available Now’. 3. Then click the search button, this will display all titles available for the Kindle.

Check out items for Kindle format. Once you have found a title you would like to check out, you need to look for a few things: 1. Is there a copy available for check out? If the title is not available you can request the item. To request an unavailable item you click on ‘Place a Hold’. You will be prompted for your library card number and pin to login. Overdrive will ask for you to confirm your email address. You will be notified by email when the item is available; you will have 3 days from then to check out the item. 2. Is it in the Kindle format? 3. Once you find a that is available and in the Kindle format you can borrow it by clicking on ‘Borrow’.

4. Click on the bookshelf button (was the Borrow button). 5. Once you are looking at your bookshelf, locate the title you checked out. 6. Click on ‘Get for Kindle’. 7. Overdrive will verify that it is the Kindle format you want; click ‘Confirm’. 8. You will be taken to Amazon’s website to complete the transaction.

Note: Checking out library ebooks requires an active Wi-Fi connection for wireless delivery to a Kindle device or USB sync. Library books will not be delivered via your Kindle's 3G connection.

Downloading your item from Amazon using Wi-Fi.

Once in Amazon, click Get Library Book to download your title. You will be prompted to login to your Amazon account.

Select the device you would like to read your on from the drop down and click Continue.

Some publishers do not allow Wi-Fi transfer of their ebooks as part of their agreement with Overdrive to carry them, and certain Kindles do not have Wi-Fi. If either of these things are true, you will need to tether the Kindle (hook it to a USB port) to transfer the title from the Amazon web site.

Once in Amazon, click Get Library Book to download your title. You will be prompted to login to your Amazon account.

Select the device you would like to read your ebook on from the drop down and click Continue.

You should be prompted to open or save the file immediately.

This will save your Kindle to the default downloads location.

To begin , first make sure your Kindle is connected to this computer via USB. Then, copy the downloaded file to the "" folder of your Kindle. It will appear on your Home screen.

You will have the option to click Manage Your Kindle where you can delete the book, view past check outs or return the book early.

Amazon will send you an email when the title is about to come due and when it has been returned. It will be necessary to delete the title from the Kindle once it’s no longer checked out to you.

Download your ebook to your Kindle or for the Kindle App.

Kindle – Sync your Kindle using Wi-Fi and the library book should show up near the top of your list.

Kindle App: Open the Application, the software will automatically sync when started. You will find your ebook in your Archived items. Click or touch the book title to download it to your device.
