Time penalty begins 7:00:01am. After 07:00:00am there will be a 30-point per minute penalty for being late. "Minutes" will be rounded up at one second past the key time. For example, 7:00:01 (one second past 7:00am) will be counted as 1 minute late. Any rider who arrives after 9:00:00am (beginning 9:00:01am) will not be considered a rally finisher.

A maximum of 3,000 points total is available for fuel purchase records. To obtain points for fuel purchase records, riders must submit a receipt for every fuel purchase with the following information on the receipt: 1) location (city/town and state/province), 2) date, 3) time, and 4) volume (gallons or liters) purchased.
If any of the required information is not printed on a receipt, it must be hand written on the receipt. Any error in the printed date should also be corrected by hand. (Errors in the printed time need not be corrected IF YOU ARE KEEPING A FUEL LOG.) Also, write the telephone number of the station on the receipt if you correct an error other than a time error. Riders of motorcycles with a fuel capacity of 7.0 or more U.S. gallons also must complete the "fuel log" sheet provided in this leg‘s rally package.
The fuel log requires all of the same information as required on receipts plus the odometer reading and the correct time the purchase was made.

The owner of the location we originally wanted to use, Aly Saad Marsy, was fined $6,337 after conviction of "criminal usury" for charging customers as much as 207,981% interest on their loans. Unfortunately that rate still wasn't enough for Aly and his shop eventually went belly up. We have no idea what Sharky's rates are, but we loved the crime so dearly that we couldn't let this one go.

After ten tickets, three accidents, and two license suspensions, Janson Towers, 19, knew the insurance premiums on his Nissan 240 would be going up, but he was shocked to see that they jumped to $103,398.89 a year. The insurer confirmed the amount and told him to quit complaining. The maximum rate he could have faced was $122,727.42 annually.

This is a wonderful example of your tax dollars at work. Two teenagers were nabbed in April 2007 near the U.S. border after having absconded from this business with a large quantity of beef jerky, sausage, and pepperoni. A drone plane with infra-red spotting device from the Department of Homeland Security assisted in the capture.

On 3/24/1989 the Exxon Valdez struck a reef in Prince William Sound, spilling almost eleven million gallons of oil into the sea. Capt. Joseph Hazelwood was acquitted of piloting the ship while intoxicated but was convicted of the misdemeanor of negligently discharging oil. Fine: $50,000, plus 1,000 hours of community service.

Twenty-five miles west of here is the bus in which Chris McCandless starved to death. He broke into a cabin not far from there to steal food at one point. McCandless‘ short and confused life is recounted in Jon Krakauer‘s book (also made into a movie), Into the Wild.

A Likely story: First pine beetles began eating the forest away around Likely. Then more than 35,000 marijuana plants were seized by the RCMP on a farm near here in the spring of 2008, breaking open an Asian grow-op concern that had boosted property values and employment in the area. Now the store makes coins for tourists from the destroyed trees and the economy is rolling along once again, more or less.

Construction foreman Gavin Docherty was struck with a high-powered nail gun. With the spike protruding from his forehead, Docherty was driven by his company's first-aid officer to the hospital. On the way they were stopped and Docherty was given a $167 ticket for failing to wear a seat belt.

More than 110,000 American citizens of Japanese ancestry were rounded up immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbor and warehoused in ten concentration camps like this until the end of World War II. This unbelievable travesty of justice was ordered by President Roosevelt and carried out here at Manzanar by California attorney general Earl Warren. Not one of the detainees was ever convicted of any crime, much less espionage or treason. For his patriotic work Warren was elected governor of California and later served as chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. But of course.

Known forever in lurid newspaper reports as the Black Dahlia, Elizabeth Short's nude body, severed at the waist, was found here on 1/15/1947. The subsequent investigation was the largest mounted by the LAPD in 20 years. The case remains unsolved.

The Zodiac killer murdered one woman and gravely injured her boyfriend on the shores of this lake on 9/27/1969. During a two-year reign of terror in the San Francisco bay area in 1968-69, he killed five, and perhaps ten, others. The case remains unsolved, although the most likely suspect is believed to be dead. In 2004 police placed it on the inactive list. The killer‘s identity is still is a Holy Grail for amateur sleuths.

In the 2005 IBR George Zelenz tried to take the easy way out by shooting a photo of the lighthouse from what appeared to be a distance of about 17 miles. He discovered, as have others, that an ethical lapse on the rally can lead to everlasting fame on the internet.

This is the house where Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman met their deaths on the night of 6/12/1994. Her ex-husband, O. J. Simpson, was tried but acquitted of the murders. He vowed to spend the remainder of his life looking for the actual killers. Unhappily, that search was interrupted by Simpson's conviction for armed robbery in Nevada in the fall of 2008, a judgment that will put the former running back in the Nevada State Prison in Carson City for 33 years.

The wife of actor Robert Blake was shot to death outside this restaurant on the evening of 5/4/2001. Blake, who portrayed one of the In Cold Blood killers in the movie of the same name, was acquitted of her murder after a lengthy trial. Like other celebrity murders in Tinseltown, it remains theoretically unsolved.

Patricia Hearst, granddaughter of newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst, was kidnapped from her apartment here by members of the Symbionese Liberation Army on 2/4/1974. She later assisted the SLA in a bank robbery in San Francisco. Upon her release from the SLA‘s clutches, she was tried and convicted of the robbery and served two years in prison.

CAUTION: The cemetery is located on the outskirts of Glenwood Springs atop Jasper Mountain via a severe hike up a dirt trail in extreme elevation and almost certain heat. The hiking trail begins near Bennett Avenue between 11th and 13th streets. Do not even think about attempting this climb if your physical health is questionable.

This is a marker memorializing the 1860 Otter Massacre in which 44 emigrants were murdered or scattered to the winds by Shoshone Indians. Not far from here self-styled mountain man Claude Dallas killed two Department of Fish and Game officers and lived off the land for a year before being captured. He was tried in this court and convicted. Five years into his 30-year sentence, Dallas escaped, eluding capture for another 11 months before being returned to the jug.

In March 2009 Li was found not guilty by reason of insanity. The attack occurred near Portage La Prairie, but since the bus station there is so depressing, we're redirecting you to Erickson (where Li spent the night before boarding the bus), a town that has memorialized their ancestors, the Vikings. Those fellows could have taught Vince Li a thing or two about cold-blooded murder.

Lawrencia ("Bambi") Bembenek, a gorgeous Milwaukee police officer convicted of killing her husband's ex-wife, was sentenced to life imprisonment in March 1982. She escaped in July 1990 and worked here (then known as the Columbia Grill) before being recaptured in October 1990. Facing a retrial of the murder charge, Bembenek pleaded no contest to 2nd degree murder and was released from custody on a sentence that was commuted to time served. Unhappily, her life since prison — despite being featured in a book, two movies, and endless television profiles — has been disastrous. She has contracted Hepatitis C, admits to alcoholism and suicidal depression, and lost part of a leg through amputation when she fell or jumped from a 2nd story window in 2002.

In 1981 Indian con man Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh established a cult city here on a 64,000-acre plot of land, attracting thousands of devoted and determined followers. Almost immediate conflict with neighboring ranchers arose, principally over land use issues. In 1984, seeking to depress voter turnout in a state election, Rajneesh cult members introduced salmonella into ten restaurants in The Dalles, poisoning more than 750 people. To this day it remains the worst biological attack ever experienced on U.S. soil. Rajneesh was deported from the country in 1985. Before his death back in India in 1990, he admitted that his claims to be a God were ―a joke.‖

Congressman and former South Dakota governor Bill Janklow, a notorious speeder, ran a stop sign at this intersection, killing motorcyclist Randy Scott. The jury was not informed of the defendant's twelve speeding tickets or three prior accidents, but since his bullshit defenses couldn‘t even pass the laugh test, he was convicted anyway. He served three months. Because Janklow claimed that he was on public business at the time of the accident, taxpayers ended up footing the million dollar bill to settle the lawsuit brought by Scott's family.

In September 1857 the Fancher party emigrant train from Arkansas was attacked by Mormons at this site. On September 11, after a five-day battle, the assailants approached the embattled pioneers under a truce flag. They convinced the emigrants to surrender peacefully and to be led out of the valley under guard. On a prearranged signal, however, the Mormon militia shot and killed 120 men and women, leaving only 17 small children to survive. It remained the worst mass murder in the country's history for exactly 144 years until the terrorist attacks of 9/11/2001.
