“I’d Strike the Son if He Insulted Me: Milton’s and Melville’s Flawed Revolutionaries” Benjamin Platt English Honors Thesis Advised by Professors Harvey Hix and Michael Edson Table of Contents: Introduction: The Flawed Revolutionary 2 Chapter 1: Satan in Paradise Lost 10 The Monarchical Father and the Regicidal Milton: 12 The Fall of Satan 27 Chapter 2: Ahab in Moby Dick; or, the Whale 44 Melville’s Democratic Drive 44 Ahab’s Satanic Descendancy 48 “Dark Ahab’s” Tyranny and Isolation 51 Potential Redemption in Pip and Starbuck 61 Burgeoning Democracy Amidst Tyranny 68 Conclusion: Human Potential and Felix Culpa 76 The “Happy” Consequences of Satan’s Rebellion 78 Ishmael, the Prophet of Democracy 82 Platt - 1 Introduction: The Flawed Revolutionary John Milton (1608-1674) and Herman Melville (1819-1891) loom large over their respective national literatures; Milton’s writing dominates the English poetic landscape while Melville’s magnum opus makes its case as “the great American novel,” a title that recognizes the national and political nature of textual works. In both Paradise Lost (1667) and Moby Dick (1851), a distinctly political vein can be detected, and these works contain incredibly similar characters, Satan and Ahab, who, in their kinship, seem to point to a consistent philosophy of political progression between these two texts that lines up with the ideologies of Milton’s and Melville’s other writings. John Milton was an outspoken critic of the English monarchy during the English Civil War (1642-1651). He railed against tyranny and the monarchy during a polemical career that carried him into a position in the cabinet of Lord Protector Cromwell after the execution of Charles I in 1649.

Lighthouse Society’s The Keeper’s Log – Summer 2007 <www.uslhs.org> Point Cabrillo Light Station, California By Bruce Rogerson and James Kimbrell n terms of age Point Cabrillo Light Station is a mere youngster, having first been lit in June 1909. However, the location I of the lighthouse on a fifty-foot bluff two miles north of Mendocino Village on the rugged coast of northern California is of great historic significance. Less than half a mile to the north lies Frolic Cove, the site of one of the most important ship wrecks on the Pacific Coast. Two miles to the south, at the mouth of Big River, is the site of the first lumber mill on the Mendocino Coast. Point Cabrillo is named for Juan Rodri- guez Cabrillo, the earliest European navigator and explorer to visit the Pacific Coast of Cali- fornia. One of his lieutenants is reported to have sailed this coast in 1542 and to have named Cape Mendocino after the Spanish Governor of New Spain or Mexico, Antonio de Mendoza. Early 19th Century Portuguese settlers and fishermen in nearby Fort Bragg, who claim Cabrillo as one their countrymen, may have given the name to the headland and subsequently to the Light Station.

M A G A Z I N E MENDOCINO COAST PROPERTY Volume 28 • Number 7 • Issue 669 • Mendocino County’s Own Real Estate Publication • January, 2015 • Published monthly Page 2 Real Estate Magazine December 19, 2014 n a wind-swept bluff two miles north of the village of Mendocino on the rugged coast of Northern California, sits the Point Cabrillo Lighthouse, a friendly sentinel for coastal mariners for over one hundred years. Its signature ten-second flash and once booming fog signal has provided a much needed navigational reference from the early days of the intrepid lumber schooners carrying redwood lumber for California’s expanding population in the early twentieth century, to today’s commercial and sport fishermen, to the huge container ships heading north to Portland and Puget Sound on the distant horizon. The Point Cabrillo Light Station has celebrated many milestones over the last twenty years: relighting of the beautifully restored Fresnel lens in August 1999; major awards from the governor for the restoration of the lightkeepers' houses in 2007; the centenary of the lighthouse in June 2009, and not least the new red roof on the Second Assistant Lightkeeper’s House last summer! This fall more exciting news was received at Point Cabrillo. Point Cabrillo Lightkeepers Association President Tanya Smart told volunteers, staff, and community supporters that the United States Coast Guard had decided after all to maintain the historic Fresnel lens at Point Cabrillo as the official federal Aid to Navigation [ATON for short] on our coast. The hundred-and-five-year-old lens will continue to burn brightly in the light tower guiding our local mariners, as it has done over all these years, even in this day of hi-tech aids such as radar and global positioning systems.
