COVERCOVERcover Garden State Preservation Trust DRAFT Annual Report INCOMPLETE FISCAL YEAR 2011 This is a director's draft of the proposed FY2011 Annual Report of the Garden State Preservation Trust. This draft report is a work-in- progress. This draft has neither been reviewed nor approved by the chairman or members of the GSPT board. The director's draft is being posted in parts as they are completed to make the information publicly available pending submission, review and final approval by the GSPT board. Garden State Preservation Trust Fiscal Year 2011 DRAFT Annual Report This is the Annual Report of the Garden State Preservation Trust for the Fiscal Year 2011 from July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011. It has always been goal and mission of the Garden State Preservation Trust to place preservation first. This report reflects that priority. The most common suggestion concerning prior annual reports was to give more prominent placement to statistics about land preservation. This report is structured to place the preservation data first and to provide it in unprecedented detail. Information and financial data concerning GSPT financing, recent appropriations and agency operations are contained in the chapters which follow the acreage tables. This is to be construed as the full annual report of the Garden State Preservation Trust for the 2011 Fiscal Year in compliance with P.L. 1999 C.152 section 8C-15. It is also intended to be a comprehensive summary of required financial reporting from FY2000 through FY2011. This document updates the financial and statistical tables contained in prior annual reports.

  • Introductions to Heritage Assets: Hermitages
Hermitages Introductions to Heritage Assets Summary Historic England’s Introductions to Heritage Assets (IHAs) are accessible, authoritative, illustrated summaries of what we know about specific types of archaeological site, building, landscape or marine asset. Typically they deal with subjects which have previously lacked such a published summary, either because the literature is dauntingly voluminous, or alternatively where little has been written. Most often it is the latter, and many IHAs bring understanding of site or building types which are neglected or little understood. This IHA provides an introduction to hermitages (places which housed a religious individual or group seeking solitude and isolation). Six types of medieval hermitage have been identified based on their siting: island and fen; forest and hillside; cave; coast; highway and bridge; and town. Descriptions of solitary; cave; communal; chantry; and lighthouse hermitages; and town hermits and their development are included. Hermitages have a large number of possible associations and were fluid establishments, overlapping with hospices, hospitals, monasteries, nunneries, bridge and chantry chapels and monastic retreats. A list of in-depth sources on the topic is suggested for further reading. This document has been prepared by Kate Wilson and edited by Joe Flatman and Pete Herring. It is one of a series of 41 documents. This edition published by Historic England October 2018. All images © Historic England unless otherwise stated. • Lighthouse Lidar Lights up Offshore Wind Farm Plans with Zero Downtime
Lighthouse Lidar Lights Up Offshore Wind Farm Plans With Zero Downtime 18 June 2018: Details of a novel three year project to enhance the energy assessment and revenue forecasting for the proposed Inch Cape Offshore Wind Farm 15km off the Angus coast in the East of Scotland demonstrates significant benefits of adopting bespoke technology to gather data. A ZephIR wind Lidar system was installed on an existing lighthouse structure thanks to a custom-built solution developed by SgurrEnergy (now Wood). This innovative solution not only negated the need for an independent offshore structure but the Lidar also took a comprehensive data set at heights from its installed location up to the projected turbine height, required no servicing and reported no major faults for the duration of the project. The project was carried out in cooperation with the Northern Lighthouse Board. The ZephIR wind Lidar, attached to the world's oldest surviving sea-washed lighthouse at Bell Rock in Scotland, achieved up to 95% data availability and conducted measurements remotely at heights of more than 180m above the sea during the 3 years of detailed wind direction and wind velocity measurements. These data sets were taken to complement the wind data from an offshore met mast. At the end of the campaign the Lidar and supporting structure were removed with no trace left on the historic lighthouse. Matt Smith, Offshore Expert at ZephIR Lidar, said: “At ZephIR Lidar, we understand that no deployment is the same and we provide the very best solution and customer service for every unique case. Seeing a ZephIR wind Lidar mounted on a heritage piece of infrastructure like Bell Rock lighthouse was a great experience! We thoroughly enjoyed working with Inch Cape Offshore Limited to get the best wind measurements possible with this a one-of-a-kind solution.” Pre- and post-deployment validations of the ZephIR wind Lidar were conducted against a 91m IEC compliant mast at the UK Remote Sensing Test Site.

This booklet was compiled by Kerry Kelly, Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes. Much of the content for this booklet was taken from Seeing the Light – Lighthouses of the Western Great Lakes a web site researched and compiled by Terry Pepper www.terrypepper.com. This web site is a great resource if you want information on other lighthouses. Other sources include research reports and photos from the National Park Service. Information about the Lightships that were stationed in the Manitou Passage was obtained from David K. Petersen, author of Erhardt Peters Volume 4 Loving Leland. http://blackcreekpress.com. Extensive background information about many of the residents of the Manitou Islands including a well- researched piece on the William Burton family, credited as the first permanent resident on South Manitou Island is available from www.ManitouiIlandsArchives.org. Click on the Archives link on the left. 2 Lighthouses draw us to them because of their picturesque architecture and their location on beautiful shores of the oceans and Great Lakes. The lives of the keepers and their families fascinate us as we try to imagine ourselves living an isolated existence on a remote shore and maintaining the light with complete dedication.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION: Ahnapee grew rapidly in the mid to late 1870s and became the home to the largest commercial fishing fleet on Lake Michigan. When the government would not approve a lighthouse to mark the entrance to the harbor, locals erected a couple of post lights at the outer end of the two piers at the harbor entrance. Congress finally appropriated money to build some range lights in 1891 to mark the entrance of the harbor at Ahnapee which was renamed Algoma. The light was built in 1892 after new piers were completed but the light was not lit until the beginning of the 1893 shipping season. The piers were unique in that they were split and off-set. There was not a single continuous pier. To get to the lighthouse a bridge had to be built to span the gap between the off-set portions. The range initially consisted of a front post light and a wooden skeletal tower rear range. In 1895 the rear range tower had an upgrade to the lens. A fifth order lens was installed that increased the range from 9 miles to 11 miles.
