A second species is here reported from Tahiti, Glycyphana stolata (Fabricius, 1781). P. fusca is also reported from the Marquesas Islands for the first time. Résumé. – Une nouvelle Cétoine pour la faune de Polynésie française (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae). La faune des Cetoniinae de Polynésie française, qui ne comprenait jusqu’à présent qu’une espèce introduite, Protaetia fusca (Herbst, 1790), compte désormais une seconde espèce, connue en Polynésie pour l’instant de Tahiti seulement, Glycyphana stolata (Fabricius, 1781). P. fusca est également citée pour la première fois des Marquises. Keywords. – Glycyphana stolata, Protaetia fusca, Cetoniini, French Polynesia. _________________ Until now only one species of Cetoniinae was known in French Polynesia, Protaetia fusca (Herbst, 1790) (PAULIAN, 1998). This species was reported only from the Society Islands, and it appears that it is also present in the Marquesas Islands. A second Cetoniinae, Glycyphana stolata (Fabricius, 1781), has been collected recently on Tahiti. It seems that G. stolata is now settled in French Polynesia and will probably spread in the different archipelagoes. A survey of Wisconsin Scarabaeoidea (Coleoptera) conducted from literature searches, collection inventories, and three years of field work (1997-1999), yielded 177 species representing nine families, two of which, Ochodaeidae and Ceratocanthidae, represent new state family records. Fifty-six species (32% of the Wisconsin fauna) represent new state species records, having not previously been recorded from the state. Authors previously recognized anywhere between two and fi ve subgenera. We present the fi rst cladistic analysis of Cremastocheilus based on 51 external adult morphological characters. Th e monophyly of the subgenera Macropodina, Trinodia and Cremastocheilus is supported. Cremastocheilus (Anatrinodia) wheeleri is most closely related to other C. (Cremastocheilus). Th e three species groups comprising C. (Myrmecotonus) are paraphyletic with respect to C. (Cremastocheilus). Th e pronotum, which bears most of the glands that enable beetles to interact with ants, provides important characters, while characters associated with setae and tomenta are homoplastic. Cannon Nutritional Ecology of the Carpenter Ant Camponotus pennsylvanicus (De Geer): Macronutrient Preference and Particle Consumption Colleen A. Cannon (ABSTRACT) The nutritional ecology of the black carpenter ant, Camponotus pennsylvanicus (De Geer) was investigated by examining macronutrient preference and particle consumption in foraging workers. The crops of foragers collected in the field were analyzed for macronutrient content at two-week intervals through the active season. Choice tests were conducted at similar intervals during the active season to determine preference within and between macronutrient groups. Isolated individuals and small social groups were fed fluorescent microspheres in the laboratory to establish the fate of particles ingested by workers of both castes. Under natural conditions, foragers chiefly collected carbohydrate and nitrogenous material. Carbohydrate predominated in the crop and consisted largely of simple sugars. A small amount of glycogen was present. Carbohydrate levels did not vary with time. Lipid levels in the crop were quite low. The level of nitrogen compounds in the crop was approximately half that of carbohydrate, and exhibited seasonal dependence. Peaks in nitrogen foraging occurred in June and September, months associated with the completion of brood rearing in Camponotus. -

PEELER Department of Entomology, University of Georgia, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Griffin Campus, 1109 Experiment Street, Griffin, GA 30223-1797, USA ABSTRACT Ground-dwelling ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) were sampled at 29 sites in 26 counties in Georgia with pitfall traps, leaf litter extraction, visual searching, and bait stations. We found 96 ant taxa including nine species not previously reported from Georgia: Myrmica ameri- cana Weber, M. pinetorum Wheeler, M. punctiventris Roger, M. spatulata Smith, Pyramica wrayi (Brown), Stenamma brevicorne (Mayr), S. diecki Emery, S. impar Forel, and S. schmitti Wheeler, as well as three apparently undescribed species (Myrmica sp. and two Ste- namma spp.). Combined with previous published records and museum records, we increased the total number of ground-dwelling ants known from Georgia to 144 taxa. 1 A checklist of arthropods associated with rat carrion in a montane locality of northern Venezuela. Apartado Postal 21827, Caracas 1020-A, Venezuela Tel.: +58-212-504.1052; fax: +58-212-504.1088; e-mail: [email protected] Abstract This is the first report of arthropods associated with carrion in Venezuela, using laboratory bred rats (Rattus norvegicus). Rat carcasses were exposed to colonization by arthropods in neighboring montane savanna and cloud forest habitats in the state of Miranda. The taxonomic composition of the arthropods varied between both ecosystems. Scarabaeidae, Silphidae, Micropezidae, Phoridae, Vespidae and one species of ant, were collected only in the cloud forest. Dermestes maculatus, Chrysomya albiceps, Termitidae and most species of ants, were found only in the savanna. Fourteen species were considered to be of primary forensic importance: Dermestes maculatus, Oxelytrum discicolle, Calliphora sp., Cochliomyia macellaria, Compsomyiops sp., Chrysomya albiceps, Phaenicia cuprina, P. sericata, P. eximia, Fannia sp., Puliciphora sp., Megaselia scalaris, Ravina sp. and Sarcophaga sp. Introduction There is relatively little information available regarding insects associated with animal carrion and human corpses in South America [1]. In Brazil, Moura et al. [2] made a preliminary analysis of the insects of medico-legal importance in Curitiba, in the state of 2 Paraná; Carvalho et al. [3] identified arthropods associated with pig carrion and human corpses in Campinas, in the state of São Paulo. Recently, forensic entomology was applied to estimate the postmortem interval (PMI) in homicide investigations by the Rio de Janeiro Police Department, Brasil [4]. -

Accepted February 11, 2000 Eriopis connexa presents a chromosome number of 2n = 18 + XX for most females analyzed and a meioforrnula of n = 9 + Xyp for all males. A small metacentric B chromosome restricted to females occurred in 10 o/o of our sample and, when submitted to C-banding, it was shown to be almost completely euchrornatic. Chromosome pairs 2 and 3 had satellites and probably contained the nucleolar organizer regions (NORs). C-band analysis also revealed that the constitutive heterochromatin was localized in the centrorneres of all chromosomes in the complement. Price Department of Biological Sciences Salisbury University This document is a pictorial reference of Maryland Scarabaeoidea genera (and sometimes species) that was created to expedite the identification of Maryland Scarabs. Our current understanding of Maryland Scarabs comes from “An Annotated Checklist of the Scarabaeoidea (Coleoptera) of Maryland” (Staines 1984). Staines reported 266 species and subspecies using literature and review of several Maryland Museums. Dr. Price and her research students are currently conducting a bioinventory of Maryland Scarabs that will be used to create a “Taxonomic Guide to the Scarabaeoidea of Maryland”.
