Nina de Villard, musicienne, poète, muse, animatrice de salon » Marie Boisvert Doctor of Philosophy Degree Département d’études françaises University of Toronto 2013 Résumé De 1862 à 1882, Nina de Villard attire chez elle à peu près tous les hommes qui laisseront leur marque dans le monde des arts et des lettres : Verlaine, Mallarmé, Maupassant, Manet et Cézanne figurent tous parmi ses hôtes. Ayant accueilli ces grands hommes, Nina et son salon trouvent, par la suite, leur place dans plusieurs livres de souvenirs et romans qui, loin de rendre leur physionomie et leur personnalité, entretiennent plutôt la confusion. Portraits fortement polarisés présentant une muse régnant sur un salon brillant d’une part, et de l’autre, une femme dépravée appartenant à un univers d’illusions perdues, ces textes construisent une image difforme et insatisfaisante de Nina et de ses soirées. Face à cette absence de cohérence, nous sommes retournée aux sources primaires en quête de la véritable Nina et de son salon. ii La première partie de notre thèse est consacrée à Nina qui, malgré des années de formation conformes à la norme, remet en question la place qui lui revient : celle d’épouse et de femme confinée à l’intérieur. Nina est avide de liberté et revendique l’identité de pianiste et une vie où elle peut donner des concerts, sortir et recevoir quand cela lui plaît. -

One of the movie’s famous scenes depicts Edward (Richard Gere) and Vivian (Julia Roberts) at the Libretto by Francesco Maria Piave opera, watching a performance of La traviata, and Vivian is brought to tears. As the viewers, we’re meant to see the similarity between the movie and the opera—a courtesan falling in love with a wealthy suiter. But in Verdi's day, fiery romances at the opera often didn't turn out so well. It’s useful to remember that in 18th- and 19th- century Europe, operas were a popular form of entertainment, similar to our movies today. Verdi based his oper a on the play, The Lady of the Camellias, a thinly-veiled autobiographical account by Alexandre Dumas fils, about his love affair with a Parisian courtesan in the mid 1800s. Verdi fought the Italian censors to set the opera in his present day and was also willing to take on Italian conservatives who disapproved of his living with a woman he had not married. However, opera Giuseppe Verdi companies insisted on setting the story in the early (1813 –1901) 1700s and, famously, the 1853 premiere was not Giovanni Boldini's 1886 successful, partly due to bad singing, and partly portrait of Verdi hangs in due to audience reaction to the change in setting. -

Desire, Fantasy, and the Writing of Lesbos-sur-Seine, 1880-1939 by Lowry Gene Martin, II A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in French And the Designated Emphasis in Women, Gender, and Sexuality in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Michael Lucey, Chair Professor Ann Smock Professor Barbara Spackman Professor Charis Thompson Fall 2010 1 Abstract Desire, Fantasy, and the Writing of Lesbos-sur-Seine, 1880-1939 by Lowry Gene Martin, II Doctor of Philosophy in French University of California, Berkeley Professor Michael Lucey, Chair My dissertation challenges a commonly accepted view that literary representations of lesbianism were merely a momentary fashion, linked to Symbolist and Decadent movements in literature. More than a trope for artistic sterility, the explosion of Sapphic representation emblematized the social fractures prevalent during the Third Republic. This dissertation illustrates that “Sapphism”—in literature and beyond—became a type of shorthand to discuss everything from declining natality to changing gender roles, from military fears to urban space to the nature of artistic production. Using legal, racial and other social discourses to provide different kinds of contextualization, my readings of such canonical authors as Zola, Proust, and Colette reveal how lesbian depictions were not merely about sexuality or art but addressed a host of social and political anxieties. Beginning with an analysis of censorship of lesbian themed novels between 1885 and 1895, I demonstrate the randomness of censorship and its failure to stem the growing number of lesbian depictions. This chapter is followed by an investigation of the role of racial and ethnic othering of the lesbian in French literature as a means to discuss French fears of contamination from its colonies and perceived threats from other world powers. -

Weis’s book constitutes the latest and most comprehensive outcome of the interest already surrounding the figure of Marie Duplessis for quite a number of years. As the title suggests, Marie (or, better, Alphonsine) embodies the rather rare case of a real-life character inspiring not only a major writer’s work, but also what the author himself considers “probably the best loved opera in the world” (p. 1). In the case of an operatic work that has almost completely displaced its literary sources, the interest towards the real “fallen woman” has already produced quite significant fruits, both in English and, most notably, in French. Weis’s book not only operates a comprehensive summary of the existing literature produced around the figure of Duplessis in her links to both Dumas and Verdi (see the extensive bibliography), but also supplements it with what can be considered the most extensive research ever carried out specifically on this figure. The amount and variety of sources used is astonishing, from spa police records in Baden-Baden to cartographical documents of mid-nineteenth-century Paris, from the detailed descriptions of the places visited by Duplessis herself to a varied palette of precious iconographical sources (see also the detailed acknowledgements at the beginning and the references and index at the end). -

Baudelaire's conflicted relationships with the female sex were well documented in his poems, most notably in the cycles of Les fleurs du mal (1857) devoted to the "Black Venus," Jeanne Duval, and her foil, the "White Venus," Apollonie Sabatier.[1] The dichotomies Baudelaire invoked in these poems—of black and white, female and male, carnal and intellectual, attraction and repulsion, life and decay—were the linguistic ingredients of a putrid yet poetic bile upon which successive generations of symbolist writers and artists nursed.
