THE NATIONAL ACADEMY of TELEVISION ARTS and SCIENCES ANNOUNCES WINNERS at the 31St ANNUAL NEWS & DOCUMENTARY EMMY ® AWARDS THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF TELEVISION ARTS AND SCIENCES ANNOUNCES WINNERS AT THE 31st ANNUAL NEWS & DOCUMENTARY EMMY ® AWARDS Documentarian Frederick Wiseman Receives Lifetime Achievement Award PBS NewsHour Honored with Chairman’s Award New York, N.Y. – September 27, 2010 (Revised October 14, 2010) – Winners of the 31st Annual News and Documentary Emmy ® Awards were announced tonight by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). The News & Documentary Emmy ® Awards were presented at a ceremony at Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, located in the Time Warner Center in New York City. The ceremony will be broadcast on Saturday, October 9 at 8pm ET on C-SPAN. The event was attended by more than 900 television and news media industry executives, news and documentary producers and journalists. Emmy ® Awards were presented in 41 categories, including Breaking News, Investigative Reporting, Outstanding Interview, and Best Documentary, among others. This year’s presenters included Diane Sawyer, anchor, ABC’s World News , Lester Holt , weekend anchor, NBC’s Nightly News , and weekend co-anchor, Today , Sheila Nevins , President, HBO Documentary Films , Dan Rather , anchor and managing editor, HDNet’s Dan Rather Reports , Bob Simon , correspondent, CBS’ 60 Minutes , Paula Zahn , Executive Producer/Host, On the Case with Paula Zahn , Investigation Discovery Network. The Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Frederick Wiseman , one of the most accomplished documentarians in the history of the medium, presented by Paula A. Kerger , President and CEO, PBS. In addition, the prestigious Chairman’s Award was given to the PBS NewsHour .     BIOGRAPHY BOB WOODRUFF ABC News Correspondent Bob Woodruff joined ABC News in 1996 and has covered major stories throughout the country and around the world for the network. He was named co-anchor of “ABC World News Tonight” in December 2005. On Jan. 29, 2006, while reporting on U.S. and Iraqi security forces, Woodruff was seriously injured by a roadside bomb that struck his vehicle near Taji, Iraq. In February 2007, just 13 months after being wounded, Woodruff returned to ABC News with his first on-air report, “To Iraq and Back: Bob Woodruff Reports.” The hour-long, prime-time documentary chronicled his traumatic brain injury (TBI), his painstaking recovery and the plight of thousands of service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with similar injuries. Since returning to the air, Woodruff has reported from around the globe. He has traveled to North Korea eight times, investigating the growing nuclear threats in the hands of Kim Jong Un. Since 2015, Woodruff has been ABC’s primary correspondent throughout Asia, especially China, reporting on topics ranging from the controversial treatment of Muslims in the Xinjiang province to the United States’ presence in the South China Sea. In 2008, ABC News aired his critically acclaimed documentary “China Inside Out,” which examined how China’s global rise impacts what’s being called the “Chinese Century.” On the streets of Manila, he has seen the rising violence and murders following President Rodrigo Duterte’s drug policies. He traveled to Japan in the wake of the devastating natural disasters to report on the stabilization of nuclear reactors in the country.

Despite their representation throughout the nation, women only make up twenty percent of the House and Senate. That is far from a representative number and something that really hurts our society as a whole. While these inequalities exist, they are perpetuated by the world in which we live, where the media plays a heavy role in molding peoples’ opinions, both consciously and subconsciously. The way in which the media presents news about women is not always representative of the women themselves and influences public opinion a great deal, which can also affect women’s ability to rise to the top, thereby breaking the ultimate glass ceilings. This research looks at a number of cases in which female politicians ran for and/or were elected to political positions at the national level (President, Vice President, and Congress) and seeks to look at the progress, or lack thereof, in media’s portrayal of female candidates running for office. The overarching goal of the research is to simply show examples of biased and unbiased coverage and address the negative or positive ways in which that coverage influences the candidate.

Journalists from Ethiopia, Gaza and Azerbaijan were honored in 2012 with Courage in Journalism Awards. “I knew that I would pay the price for my courage and I was ready to accept that price,” 2012 Courage Award winner Reeyot Alemu told the IWMF. A columnist for the independent Ethiopian newspaper Feteh, Alemu received a prison sentence after being wrongfully convicted of terrorism charges related to her reporting. IWMF initiatives help women journalists thrive in their profession across the world.
