on Thorpe, Vice President and Director of Education at WNET.ORG, believes in R the power of education. A former Latin and Greek teacher who earned an Ed.D. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and an A.B. from Harvard College (Classics), Ron oversees all educational initiatives at THIRTEEN and WLIW21. He is also responsible for a variety of new online resources for New York State schools, outreach efforts and the annual Celebration of Teaching & Learning, a professional development conference serving K-12 teachers and administrators. Why is It all starts with our basic mission, which is to education such offer viewers television and web-based experiences a priority for that educate, inform, enlighten, and entertain. We want to give teachers the tools that really help connect their WNET.ORG? students with the content and the learning skills. Given the right tools, teachers can do wonders in the classroom.

Can you tell The centerpiece of the Education Dept is the LAB, me more about which stands for Life After Broadcast. Producers come the Education to us with ideas for television shows they’re thinking about making and want to know what we might do with Department at those shows from an education perspective. The people WNET.ORG? in the LAB bat it around and come back with some ideas. We want to extend the life of these wonderful television shows so that people can use them for years and years. We want to web-based curriculum that students can benefit from for decades. Funders of our national broadcasts often look very closely at what the plan is beyond the broadcast—that’s the essence of what the Education Department does here.

What makes It’s not your typical education conference. Our Celebration participants get access to the best people in different unique? fields. We think that kind of an approach to professional development raises the expectations of all educators by putting teachers back into the position of being learners themselves. Celebration is the place where knowledge meets inspiration. We don’t believe there’s anyone in the world who is too important to speak to teachers. We’ve had Tom Brokaw, Majora Carter, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, and Alan Alda as guest speakers over the years—people that teachers never in their lives thought they’d be in the same room with. That’s transformative.

What is the The ability to keep learning. I can’t believe I get best part of paid to learn new things. It’s very, very exciting. your job? TEACHING EXCELLENCE

New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) members help New York state students to learn. With over 600,000 members in New York state’s schools and colleges, NYSUT is committed to improving the quality of education in New York state, and to ensuring that all students have the chance to succeed. NYSUT’s Education and Learning Trust and Program Services offer a range of comprehensive services to improve the professional lives of educators and the students we serve. Celebrate Teaching Students Education

Let’s give every child a great education. It’s what children deserve—and what teachers want to provide. But teachers need the tools, time and trust to help their students succeed. The Celebration of Teaching & Learning Conference will empower teachers to help our kids.

Strengthening our schools will take shared responsibility and a shared commitment to excellence. Students, teachers and parents must form a working bond. Teachers unions and their management counterparts need a genuine partnership for reforms to succeed.

The AFT is leading changes that foster great teaching and great prospects for our young people. We invite our fellow educators, elected officials, business leaders and community groups to join us.

Together, we can forge a new path for our public schools—and change public education for our changing world.
