Bibliography 273 Abstract The nation-state is now the dominant form of sovereign statehood, however, a century and a half ago the political map of Europe comprised only a handful of sovereign states, very few of them nations in the modern sense. Balkan historiography often tends to minimize the complexity of nation-building, either by referring to the national community as to a monolithic and homogenous unit, or simply by neglecting different social groups whose consciousness varied depending on region, gender and generation. Further, Bulgarian and Serbian historiography pay far more attention to the problem of "how" and "why" certain events have happened than to the emergence of national consciousness of the Balkan peoples as a complex and durable process of mental evolution. This dissertation on the concept of nationality in which most Bulgarians and Serbs were educated and socialized examines how the modern idea of nationhood was disseminated among the ordinary people and it presents the complicated process of national indoctrination carried out by various state institutions. -

I sat toward the front of the theater, spellbound. They sang in a clear, sometimes grating tone that I had never heard before, in a language I did not understand. After their first song, they announced themselves to be Slavei, Wesleyan’s only Eastern-European a cappella group. It would be another year before I auditioned for and joined Slavei, but I already knew that this music was special. Three years later, during my senior fall at Wesleyan, I sang with Slavei for a professional vocalist of Bulgarian music named Eva Salina, whom we had brought in for a workshop. -

B ‘‘Badai-Tigai,’’ nature reserve – located on the right bank of the Amudarya in the southwestern part of Karakalpakstan, 85 km south of the Takhiatash dam (see) and 130 km north of the Tuyamuyun dam. It was created in 1971 for conservation of typical intra-zonal tugai ecosystems that in the Amudarya lower reaches and delta have been practically lost by now. It was the model ecosystem of the Amudarya lower reaches. In the past, tugai (see) covered approximately 70% of the territory in the Amudarya lower reaches, but due to regulation of the Amudarya flow and agricultural development of floodplains, they disappeared nearly completely. At the time of the establishment of the preserve, it contained about 167 varieties of higher plants. By 1985, their quantity had shrunk to 61. In addition, it became a habitat of many species of animals now rare in the lower Amudarya, such as Bukhara deer (re-introduced), fox, jackal, badger, rabbit tolai, pheasant, little owl, long-eared owl, purple heron, peregrine, black kite, little cormorant, and others. -

PROMINENT GEOLOGISTS VSEGEI Portrait Gallery 135 years of the Geological Committee of Russia A. P. Karpinsky Russian Geological Research Institute (VSEGEI) is the successor of the Geological Committee, the first Russian state geological institution established in 1882. Portrait Gallery, housed in the historic building, begins on the second floor with portraits of first directors of the Geological Committee of Russia: academicians G. P. Gelmersen, one of main initiators of establishing the Geological Committee, A. P. Karpinsky, the founder of a number of scientific geological schools, the President of the Academy of Sciences from 1916 to 1936, F. N. Chernyshev, the initiator of creating the Geological Museum, which bears his name since 1935. On the third floor, the portraits are placed in the order of researchers’ decease, starting with the senior geologist of the first Geolcom scientific staff I. V. Mushketov, one of the founders of the geological and cartographic research school. Then, this important trend of geological studies was successfully advanced by A. P. Gerasimov, D. V. Nalivkin, and A. P. Markovsky. N. N. Yakovlev, A. A. Borisyak, A. N. Krishtofovich are fairly recognized as the founders of the paleontological-stratigraphic scientific school, I. F. Grigoriev, S. S. Smirnov, Yu. A. Bilibin are founders of the metallogenic school, L. I. Lutugin, P. I. Stepanov, I. I. Gorsky established the coal geologists school, A. N. Zavaritsky, V. N. Lodochnikov, D. S. Korzhinsky, the petrographic school, S. N. Nikitin and N. F. Pogrebov, the hydrogeological school, Ya. S. Edelstein and S. A. Dear Parti cipants, We, as citi zens of Ohrid, are very happy and honoured to live in a place like Ohrid. Our city is surrounded by amazing natural beauti es like the lake, the mountain Galicica and many many more. At the same ti me, we are proud to say that Ohrid is one of the oldest citi es in Europe which has been conti nuously inhabited. The archeological fi ndings that date back from prehistoric, anti que and medieval ti mes to recent history are clear evidence. There are also a lot of ancient monuments, buildings, churches and houses that make Ohrid a place where history and modern life are bond together in very diverse and unique ways. Ohrid is beauti ful during the whole year, but the summers are special. That is why the Sun is one of the most famous Macedonian symbols. The sum- mer sunshine makes the lake water warm and pleasant for swimming, and gives the fruits and vegetables which grow here a very delicious and unique taste. Talking about natural beauti es, the history and the sunshine - the story of Ohrid is not going to be complete if I don’t menti on the music of this place. The music is so rich and diverse: from the spirituality of Christi an orthodox church music, through the passion of the love songs, to the complex rhythm of the folk dances. The nature, the history, the sun, the music. We are fortunate to enjoy them, but we will be even happier if we can share them with others. -

Djordjevski Master of Arts in History San Diego State University, 2012 This work examines how force has been used in the process of nation-building in the Balkans from the Balkan Wars to the end of World War II, particularly among the Slavs of Macedonia and the Serbs of Croatia. By looking at the development of nationalism from its conception in the 18th and 19th centuries to its “apogee” in the first half of the 20th century, this thesis also explores Balkan events and ideas of nationality and nationhood in the region while putting them into a broader European context. -

The discourses the article analyses are nationalism, Orientalism, Occidentalism and Balkanism. Scholars have handled the awkward Ottoman issue in several manners: They have represented ‘Oriental’ musical characteristics as domestic, claimed that Ottoman Turks merely imitated Arab and Persian culture, and viewed Indian classical raga scales as sources for Oriental scales in the Balkans. In addition, some scholars have viewed the ‘Oriental’ characteristics as stemming from ancient Greece. The treatment of the Segâh family of Ottoman makams in theories and analyses reveals several features of folk music research in the Balkans, the most important of which are the use of Western concepts and the exclusive dependence on printed sources. The strategies for handling the Orient within have meandered between Occidentalism and Orientalism, creating an ambiguity which is called Balkanism. Key words: The Balkans, the Orient, folk music research, scales. The centuries of Ottoman domination in the Balkans had a marked effect on the populations and cultures of the peninsula. After the intro- duction of nationalism in the area during the first half of the nineteenth century, ‘the Turkish yoke’, or the Ottoman political and cultural influ- ence, became a serious problem for the Western-oriented members of the educated classes.
