Our work demonstrates how local decisions and private, and political issues can interplay increasing risks and converge in creating a small-scale disaster. On January 18 th 2017, an avalanche of size 5 (200,000 m 3) buried under 4 meters of snow the Rigopiano Hotel, in the National Park of Gran Sasso and Maiella, in Italy. In this four-star resort, 38 people were blocked inside when the avalanche hit. Two people, who fortuitously escaped the avalanche because they were outside the hotel, contacted the Operational Center for Emergency. Rescue activities started after some hours of misunderstanding about alarm truthfulness. After some days of frantic efforts, carried out 24h/24 by up to 330 people, 9 people were pulled out alive and in good conditions, whereas 29 victims were pulled from wreckage. Our research demonstrates how the coincidence of structural and contingent factors of natural and human origin converged into a disaster. -

Atlas of Rare Endemic Vascular Plants of the Arctic Technical Report No. 3 About CAFF Theprogram for the Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF) of the Arctic Council was established lo address the special needs of Arctic ecosystems, species and thcir habitats in the rapid ly developing Arctic region. Itwas initiated as one of'four programs of the Arctic Environmental Protcction Strategy (AEPS) which was adopted by Canada, Denmark/Greenland, Finland, lceland, Norway, Russia, Swcdcn and the United States through a Ministeria! Declaration at Rovaniemi, Finland in 1991. Other programs initi ated under the AEPS and overlaken hy the Are.tie Council are the ArcticMonitoring and assessment Programme (AMAP), the program for Emergency Prevention, Preparcd ness and Response (EPPR) and the program for Protection of the Arctic Marine Envi ronment (PAME). Sinceits inaugural mccti.ng in Ottawa, Canada in 1992, the CAFF program has provided scientists, conscrvation managers and groups, and indigenous people of the north with a distinct forum in which lo tackle a wide range of Arctic conservation issues at the cir cumpolar level. CAFF's main goals, which are achieved in keeping with the concepts of sustainable developrnertt and utilisation, are: • to conserve Arctic Jlora and fauna, thcir diversity and thcir habitats; • to protect the Arctic ecosystems from threats; • to improve conservation management laws, reg ulations and practices for the Arclic; • to integrale Arctic interests into global conservation fora. CAFF operates rhrough a system of Designated Agencies and National Representatives responsible for CAFF in thcir rcspcctivc countries. CAFF also has an International Work ing Group wh.ith has met annually to assess progrcss and to develop Annual WorkPlans. -

Olomouc 2020 © Martin Bitomský, 2020 Department of Ecology and Environmental Sciences Palacký University in Olomouc ABSTRACT Phylogenies are a crucial (but still overlooked) source of information in ecology. Accompanied with trait data, phylogenetic information can be used to study the most important ecological questions and processes that have implications for nature conservation and community ecology. This recent scientific field is often called community phylogenetics. In this thesis, I summarise our current knowledge about the concept of phylogenetic diversity, the relationship between phylogenetic and functional diversity, and functional and phylogenetic patterns in herbaceous vegetation in response to productivity. I primarily focus on analytical approaches and also provide an up-to-date critical review of some of limitations and issues with popular methods, while I also highlight some important considerations related to every ecological analysis with a phylogenetic and trait framework. Finally, I encourage to routinely implement phylogenetic information (and phylogenetic comparative methods) in ecology because it is needed due to both biological and statistical reasons. ABSTRAKT Fylogeneze jsou stěžejním (ale pořád stále přehlíženým) zdrojem informací v ekologii. Společně s daty o funkčních znacích může být fylogenetická informace použita pro studium těch nejdůležitějších ekologických otázek, které mají důsledky pro ochranu přírody a komunitní ekologii. Tento čerstvý vědecký obor se často označuje jako komunitní fylogenetika. -

Sono stati regolarmente prelevati campioni di erba, funghi, muschi e terreni all’interno del Parco Naturale Regionale Sirente-Velino, del Parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo Lazio e Molise, del Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e dei Monti della Laga e del Parco Nazionale della Maiella. The Burren 2018 species list and trip report, 7th-12th June 2018 WILDLIFE TRAVEL The Burren 2018 s 1 The Burren 2018 species list and trip report, 7th-12th June 2018 Day 1: 7th June: Arrive in Lisdoonvarna; supper at Rathbaun Hotel Arriving by a variety of routes and means, we all gathered at Caherleigh House by 6pm, sustained by a round of fresh tea, coffee and delightful home-made scones from our ever-helpful host, Dermot. After introductions and some background to the geology and floral elements in the Burren from Brian (stressing the Mediterranean component of the flora after a day’s Mediterranean heat and sun), we made our way to the Rathbaun, for some substantial and tasty local food and our first taste of Irish music from the three young ladies of Ceolan, and their energetic four-hour performance (not sure any of us had the stamina to stay to the end). Day 2: 8th June: Poulsallach At 9am we were collected by Tony, our driver from Glynn’s Coaches for the week, and following a half-hour drive we arrived at a coastal stretch of species-rich limestone pavement which represented the perfect introduction to the Burren’s flora: a stunningly beautiful mix of coastal, Mediterranean, Atlantic and Arctic-Alpine species gathered together uniquely in a natural rock garden. First impressions were of patchy grassland, sparkling with heath spotted- orchids Dactylorhiza maculata ericetorum and drifts of the ubiquitous and glowing-purple bloody crane’s-bill Geranium sanguineum, between bare rock. A closer look revealed a diverse and colourful tapestry of dozens of flowers - the yellows of goldenrod Solidago virgaurea, kidney-vetch Anthyllis vulneraria, and bird’s-foot trefoil Lotus corniculatus (and its attendant common blue butterflies Polyommatus Icarus), pink splashes of wild thyme Thymus polytrichus and the hairy local subspecies of lousewort Pedicularis sylvatica ssp. -
