An Analysis of Contemporary Manga Culture in Japan and Sweden
An analysis of Contemporary Manga Culture in Japan and Sweden with a study of the works of Naoki Urasawa A Master’s Thesis for the Degree “ Master of Arts (Two Years) in Visual Culture By Erika Fujiwara Master thesis: May, 2010 Grader: Anders Michelsen Author: Erika Fujiwara Supervisor: Måns Holst-Ekström Page: 50 Illustrations: 7 This thesis is an analysis of contemporary Manga Culture in Japan and Sweden. The objective of the study was to identify the potential and problems for Manga culture and its future in the international market. Also I try to examine the potential of Manga to establish its academic status. This research will be based on the analysis of the transition and features of Manga related with Japanese culture, and a case study of Urasawa Naoki’s works from a feminist and postmodernist points of view. The research method is basically the analysis of literatures, interviews with Manga artists and my own observation. The first chapter starts with the analysis of comic book features from visual cultural point of view, a historical overview of Manga and Japanese cultural introduction in a relation to Manga. The second chapter will analyze Naoki Urasawa who is said to be one of the best contemporary Manga artists in Japan, or the reincarnation of Osamu Tezuka, well-known as the father of Manga. The third chapter focuses on the comparative study of Manga in Japan and Sweden in order to evaluate Manga’s potential and to identify the problems using the interviews of those who work in Manga industry, and finally the last chapter contains the feminist perspectives on Manga. -

Abstract Political Science Fuller, Frank R. B.A
ABSTRACT POLITICAL SCIENCE FULLER, FRANK R. B.A. OGLETHORPE U1JIVERSITY, 2000 M.S. GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, 2001 THE ATOMIC BOMB: REFLECTIONS IN JAPANESE MANGA AND ANIME Committee Chair: Robert B. DeJanes, Ph.D. Dissertation dated May 2012 This study examines post-World War II “anime” and manga based on the bomb’s after-effects and changes in Japanese mindsets resulting from the War, especially as inspired by Osamu Tezuka and later artists influenced by his works. This study theorized that Japanese political culture elements, through particular plotlines, could be traced in manga and anime themes carrying hidden messages repeatedly referencing the bomb’s effects on Japan, citing Tezuka’s influence, in the 1945-65 and 1985-95 periods, in the post-apocalyptic, science fiction, and fantasy genres. Case studies were used to qualitatively assess data for historical evidence of Tezuka’s influence across specific genres, from scholarly studies and reviews of manga. comics, and related media. Evidence ofTezuka-inspired themes, such as hope out of endless devastation (the phoenix analogy) and man’s destructive obsession with technology by conquering nature (dependent variables), were analyzed from a comparativist, historical viewpoint, as influenced by atomic bomb-related themes. The researcher explains the Japanese fascination with technology and why many anime show status quo disagreements. Japan absorbed trauma from the bomb, was invaded by foreigners, and faced a complete overhaul. Post-war, the economy grew rapidly, but Japan must reduce rigidity and social conformity. The Japanese are aware of the US role in their dual defense arrangement; Japan felt discomfort as a junior-partner in the 1950s-60s. -

Manga: Studio Delle Caratteristiche Grafiche E Narrative Del Fumetto Giapponese
Corso di Laurea magistrale in Lingue e civiltà dell’Asia e dell’Africa Mediterranea Tesi di Laurea Manga: studio delle caratteristiche grafiche e narrative del fumetto giapponese Relatore Ch. Prof. Toshio Miyake Correlatore Cristian Posocco Laureando Davide Sarti Matricola 987555 Anno Accademico 2013 / 2014 要旨 日本の漫画とアニメは1980年ぐらいから世界に広がり、近くに、どこでもその 魅力が認められてきた。
Boys' Love for the Love of It: Progressive Prosumers and The
Boys’ Love for the Love of it: Progressive Prosumers and the Proliferation of Queer Culture through Manga Antonija Cavcic BA (Hons) in Communication and Cultural Studies Master of Arts in English Studies Image courtesy of Carolina Reyes (2017) This dissertation is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Murdoch University, 2017 School of Arts Murdoch University, Perth, Western Australia I declare that this thesis is my own account of my research and contains as its main content work which has not previously been submitted for a degree at any tertiary education institution. In addition, I confirm that the fieldwork conducted for the purpose of this thesis was approved by the Human Ethics Committee at Murdoch University. Permit Number: 2013/133. Permit Title: Dōjin and Fujoshi Culture. .................................... Antonija Cavcic ii ABSTRACT Boys’ love (BL) manga (as a genre of Japanese comics) with either homoerotic or homosocial graphics and content, is largely produced by and for female readers. Much like the audacious women writers in Victorian Britain, these amateur female BL artists (dōjin) and their respective consumers in Japan have arguably empowered themselves as a subcultural community, as well as the represented LGBT community, through progressive and often radical means. Although much scholarly attention has focused on the readers’ gratifications and why BL has such a large female readership, little attention has been given to how, or the extent to which, the popularity of BL manga has potentially fostered LGBT visibility; or to the illustrators who have continued to independently publish such content at their own expense. Essenitally, I analyse the positive socio-economic effects and greater significance which lie in autonomous authorship, exclusive fan rituals, and their potential by-product of progression towards equality in terms of gender and sexuality. -
Beyond Cultures and Identities
PALGRAVE STUDIES IN COMICS AND GRAPHIC NOVELS UNITING DIFFERENT BEYOND CULTURES AND IDENTITIES Edited by Fusami Ogi, Rebecca Suter, Kazumi Nagaike, John A. Lent Palgrave Studies in Comics and Graphic Novels Series Editor Roger Sabin University of the Arts London London, UK This series concerns Comics Studies—with a capital “c” and a capital “s.” It feels good to write it that way. From emerging as a fringe interest within Literature and Media/Cultural Studies departments, to becoming a minor field, to maturing into the fastest growing field in the Humanities, to becoming a nascent discipline, the journey has been a hard but spectacular one. Those capital letters have been earned. Palgrave Studies in Comics and Graphic Novels covers all aspects of the comic strip, comic book, and graphic novel, explored through clear and informative texts offering expansive coverage and theoretical sophistica- tion. It is international in scope and provides a space in which scholars from all backgrounds can present new thinking about politics, history, aesthetics, production, distribution, and reception as well as the digital realm. Books appear in one of two forms: traditional monographs of 60,000 to 90,000 words and shorter works (Palgrave Pivots) of 20,000 to 50,000 words. All are rigorously peer-reviewed. Palgrave Pivots include new takes on theory, concise histories, and—not least—considered provo- cations. After all, Comics Studies may have come a long way, but it can’t progress without a little prodding. Series Editor Roger Sabin is Professor of Popular Culture at the University of the Arts London, UK. -

Investigating the Revival of the Boy Detective in Japan's Lost Decade
Manga, Murder and Mystery: Investigating the Revival of the Boy Detective in Japan’s Lost Decade by Tsugumi Okabe A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Comparative Literature University of Alberta © Tsugumi Okabe, 2019 Abstract The past two decades have seen a sustained growth in the number of Japanese mystery and detective comics (manga) publications that feature boys (and girls) as crime fighting agents. While the earliest incarnation of the boy detective character type can be traced to the works of Edogawa Rampo (1894-1965), little critical attention has been paid to the impact of his works on contemporary manga narratives. This thesis takes up the genre of Japanese mystery/detective manga and explores the construction of the boy detective (shōnen tantei) to address the crisis of young adult culture during the so-called Lost Decade in Japan. It conducts a comparative textual analysis of three commercially successful manga: Kanari Yōzaburō and Seimaru Amagi’s Kindaichi Shōnen no Jikenbo (1992-1997), Aoyama Gōshō’s Meitantei Konan (1994- ), and Ohba Tsugumi’s Death Note (2003-06), and reveals that the boy detective is defined by his role as the other, but that each series deals with this otherness in thematically different ways in response to the discursive formation of youth delinquents in 1990s Japan. Additionally, because the boy detective tradition in manga emerged from more traditional literature, this thesis takes an interdisciplinary approach to contextualizing the deeply complex literary history of Japanese detective fiction as it contributes to an understanding of how (youth) identity can be analyzed in detective manga.
