  • Planning the Horticultural Sector Managing Greenhouse Sprawl in the Netherlands
Planning the Horticultural Sector Managing Greenhouse Sprawl in the Netherlands Korthals Altes, W.K., Van Rij, E. (2013) Planning the horticultural sector: Managing greenhouse sprawl in the Netherlands, Land Use Policy, 31, 486-497 Abstract Greenhouses are a typical example of peri-urban land-use, a phenomenon that many planning systems find difficult to address as it mixes agricultural identity with urban appearance. Despite its urban appearance, greenhouse development often manages to evade urban containment policies. But a ban on greenhouse development might well result in under-utilisation of the economic value of the sector and its potential for sustainability. Specific knowledge of the urban and rural character of greenhouses is essential for the implementation of planning strategies. This paper analyses Dutch planning policies for greenhouses. It concludes with a discussion of how insights from greenhouse planning can be applied in other contexts involving peri-urban areas. Keywords: greenhouses; horticulture; land-use planning; the Netherlands; peri-urban land-use 1 Introduction The important role played by the urban-rural dichotomy in planning practice is a complicating factor in planning strategies for peri-urban areas, often conceptualised as border areas (the rural-urban fringe) or as an intermediate zone between city and countryside (the rural-urban transition zone) (Simon, 2008). However, “[t]he rural-urban fringe has a special, and not simply a transitional, land-use pattern that distinguishes it from more distant countryside and more urbanised space.” (Gallent and Shaw, 2007, 621) Planning policies tend to overlook this specific peri-environment, focusing rather on the black-and-white difference between urban and rural while disregarding developments in the shadow of cities (Hornis and Van Eck, 2008).

  • Clusters Agriculture
Clusters Agriculture How can clusters in agriculture be measured and identified in the Netherlands? Wageningen UR, 2011 M.A. Schouten Registration number: 890713747040 Economics and Policy (BEB) Agricultural Economics and Rural Policy Group Supervisor: prof. dr. W.J.M. Heijman Second supervisor: dr. J.A.C. van Ophem Abstract There are several methods to measure clusters in agribusiness: . Shift share analysis: a method of estimating the competitiveness of a certain area. Location quotient: a tool to measure economic strength of a certain industry in a region. Clustering based on number of farms. Clusters can be identified by type of knowledge: . Factor endowment clusters: clusters that exist because of comparative advantages. Techno clusters: clusters that are based on sharing of knowledge. Historic knowhow-based clusters: clusters that exist because of traditional knowhow advantages. Clusters can be identified by type of development: . Geographical clusters: clustering because of the location or availability of resources. Sectorial clusters: clustering of firms from the same sector. Horizontal clusters: clustering of firms on a horizontal level. Vertical clusters: clustering of firms from the same supply chain. Location quotients agriculture in the Netherlands: According to location quotients calculation (based on number of jobs in agriculture and number of farms) agriculture is overrepresented in the less urbanized and more remote parts of the Netherlands with the exception of horticulture; horticulture is mainly located in the urbanized western part of the Netherlands. Cluster analysis based on number of farms in the Netherlands: . Arable farms: mainly located in the provinces Zeeland, Flevoland and Groningen where the soil type is suitable for arable farms.

TULIP TIME, U. S. A.: STAGING MEMORY, IDENTITY AND ETHNICITY IN DUTCH-AMERICAN COMMUNITY FESTIVALS DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Terence Guy Schoone-Jongen, M. A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2007 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Thomas Postlewait, Advisor Professor Dorothy Noyes Professor Alan Woods Adviser Theatre Graduate Program ABSTRACT Throughout the United States, thousands of festivals, like St. Patrick’s Day in New York City or the Greek Festival and Oktoberfest in Columbus, annually celebrate the ethnic heritages, values, and identities of the communities that stage them. Combining elements of ethnic pride, nostalgia, sentimentality, cultural memory, religous values, political positions, economic motive, and the spirit of celebration, these festivals are well-organized performances that promote a community’s special identity and heritage. At the same time, these festivals usually reach out to the larger community in an attempt to place the ethnic community within the American fabric. These festivals have a complex history tied to the “melting pot” history of America. Since the twentieth century many communities and ethnic groups have struggled to hold onto or reclaim a past that gradually slips away. Ethnic heritage festivals are one prevalent way to maintain this receding past. And yet such ii festivals can serve radically different aims, socially and politically. In this dissertation I will investigate how these festivals are presented and why they are significant for both participants and spectators. I wish to determine what such festivals do and mean. I will examine five Dutch American festivals, three of which are among the oldest ethnic heritage festivals in the United States.

  • The Effect of the Incentivized Gradual Retirement Plans on Municipalities’ Employment Rate
The effect of the Incentivized Gradual Retirement Plans on municipalities’ employment rate JEL code: J26, J45 A.T.G.J. Rutten M.G. Knoef D.J. Van Vuuren We investigate the effect of incentivized gradual retirement plans (GRPs) on the retirement behavior of older civil servants and the employment levels of younger civil servants at municipalities. The GRP wants to establish that older workers remain employed up to the pension eligibility age, by offering older-employees a reduction in working hours with only a limited decrease in net earnings and little to no reduction in pension accrual. Municipalities use this freed-up capacity by hiring younger employees. Using variation in the availability of GRPs between Dutch municipalities, we use a differences-in-differences design to test whether GRPs succeeded in achieving its goals. We find that this is not the case. More precisely, we find that the adoption of a GRP has a minor significant effect (close to zero) on the exit age of older civil servants. We as well find that GRPs do not increase the hiring rate of young civil servants in the age group 18-30. 1 I Introduction Most western countries are confronted with an increasing life expectancy and a decreasing fertility rate. Because of these developments, most countries implemented numerous reforms to increase the labor force participation rates among older workers (OECD, 2011). However, the implementation of these reforms raised questions about whether older workers can work longer. Therefore, different countries proposed different solutions. For instance, Austria implemented an early retirement pension option for workers in heavy occupations.

Van Wijk’s skills in sculpting were obvious from a young age and encouraged by his father. Drawing lessons began with his uncle Arie Stortenbeker, an amateur painter, and at the age of twelve he was enrolled at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague. The chief instructor was the Belgian sculptor Antoine ‘Eugene’ Lacomblé who taught Van Wijk the art of modeling. The painter Fridolin Becker, another professor at the academy during this period, was also influential. Throughout his formal studies he continued to work in his father’s shop. After completing his schooling, Van Wijk was granted an internship at the famous Parisian foundry F.
