The area is home to Sliabh Liag HIGHLIGHT OF THE ROUTE: (Slieve League) one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe and also a key signature discovery point along the Wild Atlantic Way. The breathtaking Experience the spectacular views from one of Europe’s highest sea cliffs at views at Sliabh Liag rightly draw visitors from all four corners of the globe. Sliabh Liag Unlike most, who fail to stray far from the roads, you get the chance to see SCHEMATIC TRAIL MAP: the cliffs in all their glory. The walk follows the cliffs from the viewing point at Bunglass to the ruins of the early-Christian monastery of Saint Aodh McBricne. The views from around the monastery are simply jaw dropping, with the great sweep of land to the east and the ocean far below to the west. The tour follows much of “Slí Cholmcille” part of the Bealach Na Gaeltachta routes and takes in the village of Glencolmcille where wonderful coastal views across the bay to Glen head await and a number of pre and early- Christine sites in the valley can be visited. In writing this thesis, I hope that I have, in some way, managed to explain the reasons for this cultural diversity. This booklet is a pocket guide to some of the interesting and historic places in the town of Killybegs. When you have had a look at these local landmarks, remember you’re only getting started. The town was famously the last port of call for the “Girona”, the most ill-fated ship of the Spanish Armada in 1588. These locations include the registered national monument which incorporates St Catherine’s Church and graveyard, St Catherine’s Well and the ruin of Kit’s Castle. A short distance away is St John’s Church of Ireland, a beautiful building in its own right and a fascinating visit to see the graveyard where there are several WWI burials. Overlooking the town is the factory built by Scot, Alexander Morton, in 1898 to house his Donegal Carpets enterprise, producing beautiful handcrafted floor coverings which today grace such buildings as Buckingham Palace and the White House in Washington. It was also attacked by pirates on at least one occasion and later was a convenient haven for the ships of Dutch corsair, Klaas Campaen, as he awaited a royal pardon before retiring to Holland with his ill-gotten gains.

Various studies of the problems have been conducted from time to time, remedies have been proposed and solutions sought and different approaches have been tried. Considerable national effort and finances are being devoted in various ways in an attempt to overcome the problems but these areas are still largely underdeveloped. The economic, social and cultural well-being of the people of these areas and of the entire nation stands to benefit from any development that can be achieved. Some of the most adverse conditions obtaining in the whole western region of Ireland are those to be found in West Donegal - an area poorly endowed in physical resources and reflecting all the ills of a high rate of emigration, an adverse population structure, an underdeveloped agriculture, low income levels and several other rural problems. Against this background, the Council of An Foras Taluntais decided that the com­ plex situation prevailing in West Donegal should be examined and appraised in a systematic, scientific manner and, having thoroughly analysed the findings and within the context of modern knowledge and techniques, some models for the agricultural development of the area should be established. While there was a certain background of experience and information on such problems as emigration and farm resources and income this knowledge was of a general nature, the position in this respect being akin to that for many other areas of the country.

TAYMAN Introduction My great-great-great grandmother, Mary Haggerty, immigrated to the New World in the 19th century from Donegal, Ireland. From letters that were written about her travels, historical sources, and imagination, I have put together what I believe to be an accurate account of her voyage. The life and journey contained in the following pages describe plausible experiences that Mary Haggerty had on her way to the New World. The immigration of Mary Haggerty plays a crucial part in my family’s history. Unfortunately, her journey is not well documented. Letters written by my great-grandmother contain little more than her name, where she grew up, and where she settled upon arrival to America. Being such an important event for my family, I want to fill as many gaps as possible in the hopes that her experiences will not be swept up in the tides of time. This is her story. Ireland Nestled in a protected bay, Donegal is a place of immense natural beauty. Much like the rest of Ireland, it is characterized by its loping shamrock-colored hills and striking cliffs that peer across the Atlantic Ocean. Despite its visual splendor, Donegal is a difficult place to live. Most of the year it is plagued by ferocious winds and high precipitation. The winters are cold and long, and there are only a few months of the year where outdoor activities are tolerable. Mary Haggerty grew up in Teelin, County Donegal. Teelin is a small fishing village on Donegal Bay, just east of Slieve League, the highest sea cliffs in Ireland.
