ON TAQIYYA, OR ON HOW NOT to LIE Qusthan Firdaus Universitas Buddhi Dharma, Tangerang, Indonesia ABSTRACT This article attempts to clarify the concept of taqiyya (or dissimulation for religious purposes). It will examine if the concept is coherent, and whether practices of taqiyya follow its concept. The article first discusses the concept of taqiyya. Second, it reviews historical examples of its practice. Third, it examines the implications of the Ninth Commandment in the Bible. Fourth, it discusses the notion of ‘speaking justly’ in the Qur’an. And fifth, it examines the manner in which the practice of taqiyya, often deviates from its concept. Introduction Can we lie in order to protect ourselves and protect our faith? This article aims to examine the concept and the practices of taqiyya. By examining it, I wish to demonstrate that taqiyya is conceptually coherent though its practice might be abused to the degree that it deviates from the concept. In other words, this article will be an intellectual exercise comparing the concept and practices of taqiyya. Moreover, Prajñā Vihāra Vol. 17 No 1, January-June 2016, 1-32 © 2000 by Assumption University Press Qusthan Firdaus 1 one of the Ten Commandments prohibits us to bear false witness. This article brings into focus some questions such as: What is the concept of taqiyya? Is such concept coherent? Do practices of taqiyya concur with its concept? Does taqiyya violate the Ninth Commandment or the duty to not lie? What I mean by ‘to violate’ is failing or breaking to comply with a rule. In this particular case, the rule is the Ninth Commandment.

  • A Comparative Exploration of the Spiritual Authority of the Awliyā' In
A Comparative Exploration of the Spiritual Authority of the Awliyā’ in the Shi‘i and Sufi Traditions Rebecca Masterton Abstract This paper aims to engage in a critical comparison of the spiritual authority of the awliyā’ in the Shi‘i and Sufi traditions in order to examine an area of Islamic belief that remains unclearly defined. Similarities between Shi‘i and Sufi doctrine have long been noted, but little research has been conducted on how and why they devel- oped. Taking a central tenet of both, walāyah, the paper discusses several of its key aspects as they appear recorded in Shi‘i ḥadīth collections and as they appear later in one of the earliest Sunni Sufi treatises. By extention, it seeks to explore the identity of the awliyā’ and their role in relation to the Twelve Imams. It also traces the re- absorption into Shi‘i culture of the Sufi definition of walāyah via two examples: the works of one branch of the Dhahabi order and those of Allamah Tabataba’i, a popular twentieth-century Iranian mystic and scholar. Introduction This paper aims to engage in a critical comparison of the spiritual authority of the awliyā’ in the Shi‘i and Sufi traditions to examine more closely and po- tentially uncover an area of Islamic doctrine that remains unclearly defined. Throughout history some Shi‘i ‘urafā’ have also called themselves “Sufi,” or Rebecca Masterton obtained her doctorate in the Islamic and Francophone literature of West Africa in 2006 from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. After serving as senior lecturer at the Islamic College for a number of years, she launched Online Shi‘a Studies.

Carney, ‘Early Shi’ite Mysticism: Imamology and the “GhulAh” Tradition’, Submitted to the School of Oriental and African Studies for the award of a PhD in Languages and Cultures of the Near and Middle East. This is the third time this thesis has been submitted for approval to the external examiners. On this occasion there has been some progress made. The analysis of early ImAmD IadDth literature is more nuanced than in previous versions, and there is (limited) recognition of the problematic method of adducing simple theological factions from IadDth reports found in later collections such as those of al-Saffar and al-KulaynB. The focus of the thesis has narrowed to a comparison of the material within the IadDth collections and the ghulAh accounts in early fira q literature.

  • FORWARD ISMAILI Historiography Was Connected
FORWARD ISMAILI historiography was connected with the beginning of orientalism when French scholar A.I. Silvestre de Sacy (1758-1838) wrote his famous "Expose sur la religion des Druzes" (1838). But this was only a compilation of Sunni sources which were in general very hostile. That is why the real Ismaili historiography begun indeed under Sultan Muhammad Shah, the Aga Khan III at the very beginning of xxth century. A Persian scholar, Fidai Khurasani was invited by the Imam in Bombay where he was able to achieve around 1902 his "Hidayat-i Mu'minin". But this work was not really realized from a scientific point of view. The author included some miracles of the Imams even in modern times. With scholars like W. Ivanow (1886-1970) or L.Massignon (1883-1962), Ismaili studies growth but curiously, if the knowledge and the understanding of the Ismaili literature and doctrine increased, historiography was forsaken. However, in 1936, the editor of the review "Ismaili", A.J. Chunara wrote the famous "Noorum Moobin" in Gujrati. It was the very first attempt in historiography from an Indian point of view. The book became very popular and it was reprinted; until now, most of the Khoja families possess it. A few years later, in 1940, A.S. Picklay produced the first synthesis in English. In 1964, a Libanese scholar, M. Ghalib, published the first attempt in the Arabian world. Since that period, F. Daftary published in 1990 his masterly "The Ismailis: Their History and Doctrines". Next year, in 1991, the Syrian scholar, Arif Tamir proposed his "Tarikh al- Ismailiya".

(January 2020) (Learn how and when to remove this template message) After the death of the Prophet Muhammad in 632, there was a crisis of succession, because Muhammad did not leave a recognized heir. Ansar (natives of Medina) gathered to decide on a new leader of the Muslim community among themselves. Abu Bakr, a prominent ally of Muhammad, said an attempt to elect a leader outside the Muhammad tribe, Kuraisha, was likely to lead to a split in the community. He presented Umara and Abu Ubaid ibn al-Jarrah as an a potential choice. Another suggestion was that Kuraish and Ansar choose a leader among themselves, who would then rule together. In the end, Umar swore allegiance to Abu Bakr, citing his fame among his comrades.
