A prayer from Pastor Chris

Most gracious and loving God, 2020 continues to be a year engulfed by stress, anxiety, and difficulty for so many as all the events that have transpired this year continue to drain our strength. With the end of the year fast approaching we are caught between optimism and hope for 2021; yet still feeling as though we are awaiting the next event to disrupt our lives and normalcy. Caught in this in-between-time, we ask and pray for Your continued presence and guidance to help remind us that we are held securely in Your embrace from the Cross, and the light of Your resurrection shines in our darkness to help us hold on to today and Your promises that lift us and carry us forward to tomorrow, trusting that tomorrow is securely held in Your hands. AMEN +

RADIO MINISTRY We invite you to listen on Sunday mornings at 11:00 am on Pottsville AM/FM radio stations: WPPA 1360 AM OR 105.9 FM to listen to our radio ministry. You can also sponsor the radio ministry by calling the church office. $25 for half sponsorship or $50 for full sponsorship. "We are modifying the current format of our Radio Ministry ("The Connecting Link") in hopes that it will help enhance everyone's listening and worshipping experience and enjoyment. Our new format will more closely reflect the worship services that are currently available on Trinity's website. We thank everyone for tuning in and listening to our Radio Ministry services all these years. It has been, and continues to be our privilege to bring them to you."

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace. (1 Peter 4:10) DOING OUR ROLE When two of my grandchildren tried out for the musical Alice in Wonderland Jr., their hearts were set on getting leading roles. Maggie wanted to be young Alice, and Katie thought Mathilda would be a good role. But they were chosen to be flowers. Not exactly a ticket to Broadway. Yet my daughter said the girls were “excited for their friends who got the (leading roles). Their joy seemed greater cheering for their friends and sharing in their excitement.” What a picture of how our interactions with each other in the body of Christ should look! Every local church has what might be considered key roles. But it also needs the flowers—the ones who do vital but not-so-high-profile work. If others get roles we desire, may we choose to encourage them even as we passionately fulfill the roles God has given us. In fact, helping and encouraging others is a way to show love for Him. Hebrews 6:10 says, “(God) will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people.” And no gift from His hand is unimportant: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace” (1 Peter 4:10) Imagine a church of encouragers diligently using their God-given gifts to His honor (Hebrews 6:10). That makes for joy! Do you know someone who received a position, task, or role you wanted, yet could use your encouragement? Why is it good to thank God for the tasks He’s given you in serving others?

Sovereign God, help me not to focus on other roles, but to serve You in the sacred calling You’ve given me. Enable me to help others by a word of encouragement for what they do for You.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As Church Council President here at Trinity, I need to discuss an urgent matter with you today. I hope you are all doing well during this difficult time. No one could have imagined back in January when we first heard about Coronavirus, that we would still be dealing with it in late October. We all assumed after a few weeks that it would be over, and we could get back to our normal lives. We certainly never thought that we would see Trinity close down like we did in March. It seems like we’re all getting accustomed to new “first” in our lives.

When the decision was made to reopen in July, we were aware that not everyone would be comfortable coming back to Church. That’s why the option of a taped version of our service was offered, so people could view from the safety of their own residence. Based on the number of people attending service in person, most of us are still not coming to Church in person yet. We have taken every precaution to assure the safety of everyone who attends. Everyone has their temperature taken before they enter the building. Pews are marked to assure social distancing, and masks are required to be worn at all times.

Even with all these precautions, we understand the need to feel safe. That’s why we encourage folks to worship with us using the digital platforms we have available. Whether it’s YouTube, Facebook, the Church’s website, or the radio ministry.

Now here comes the issue. Remember the saying “out of sight out of mind?”. While folks are not yet returning, the work of the Church goes on. And to continue to do God’s work here at Trinity, we still need your support. Our giving, year to date, is well below what is needed. We understand these are trying times for a lot of us, but please remember to keep up with your offering whenever possible. You can drop off your envelope at the Church office, or mail it in. There is also an electronic option on the Church’s website. We all look forward to the day we can worship together. The and doughnuts will be ready. Until then, please be safe and have faith that God will see us through this difficult time.

Sincerely, Ron Brennan Church Council President

CONFIRMATION CORNER

CONFIRMATION EXPECTATIONS

Trinity’s hope is that your confirmation experience is one filled with grace, wonder, learning, growing and having some fun along the way. Confirmation is a time for you to gain a better understanding of who God is and what He’s all about; do some hands-on service ministry; and what it means to be “Lutheran”. Over the next year, it will take you, your parents, confirmation teachers, and the Holy Spirit to make that happen! We ask you then, to put in the commitment to meeting the expectations so you can get the most out of our time together and to have a great confirmation experience.

Our expectations are fairly simple to understand, but it will take your commitment to complete. Just like any other program, organization, or sport you might be involved in, in order to get anything “out of it”, it requires your commitment. Our main expectation for our confirmation program is participation – participation in Worship, Confirmation Classes and Service Ministry. Participation is different than attendance. Participation means taking an active part, by listening, responding, asking questions, being enthusiastic, and offering your thoughts and questions. We all know it’s easy to “show up” for something but a whole other thing when we participate.

CONFIRMATION CORNER (continued)

Below are the expectations for participation in worship, class and service:

Worship: Worship is at the center of our faith. Taking time out of our lives to thank and praise God; to hear His Word and to experience God’s grace through the sacraments is what worship is all about. So, our expectation is that you’ll participate in worship on a regular basis. We’d love for you to worship in the Sanctuary every week, but we know that’s not always possible. You get sick, you go away, weather too bad to drive in, etc. The good news is that you have options. You can worship in the Sanctuary, worship in another church, or watch online (trinitypottsville.com) any day of the week. This year, you’ll have the opportunity to reflect on worship through Worship Notes. Worship Notes are to be completed and turned in at the next class. In order to complete this expectation, you’ll need to hand in 20 for services held between October 26 – May 20. Notes will be available before class and/or can be emailed out.

Confirmation Class: Learning happens in a variety of ways – listening, discussing, asking questions, sharing concerns and good news, praying and blessings should be a part of each class. We have 13 classes scheduled. If you are unable to attend class, you have two options: -Attending an “alternate week” class or, -Completing lesson at home. If you choose to complete lesson at home, completed lesson is to be turned in at next class. In order to complete this expectation is 100% of class work completed. 3 Service Ministry: As of now, we have 3 Service Ministry projects planned. As the year goes on, more may be added. Our current plan is to participate in the Mason’s Christmas Gala by making ornaments and decorating one of their Christmas trees; leading Advent and Lenten Readings, and bread making w/mini retreat. The expectation is 100% participation. As we stated earlier, we hope you enjoy your confirmation year – and we are so glad to have you involved! If there is anything you need, have any questions, concerns about confirmation, etc. please call either Pastor Chris (570-622-9910) or Karen Wood (570-985-7524).

Thanks, and have fun!

Time to start thinking about Christmas

Poinsettia memorial/shut-in delivery

This year, we will be doing the tribute booklet, but we have added something to it.

When putting in your poinsettia memorial, you have the opportunity to have your poinsettia delivered to a Trinity shut-in, as long as they are not in a nursing home or hospital that prohibits the delivery of flowers. These will be delivered a few weeks before Christmas.

As in the past, you have the opportunity to pick-up your poinsettia after services, which you would indicate on the order form.

We will also be looking for individuals to deliver the poinsettias to the shut-ins.

The beginning of October…no better time than right now to think about Christmas Eve! Unprecedented, sure, but this is 2020 after all. We have experienced, suffered, and lived through, and continue to live through quite a bit this year. Affecting all of us; and all of us differently. So why not look to Christmas…to the Manger, to the Christ Child, to that night in Bethlehem so long ago…Yes, let’s look now!

We have begun the planning for our socially-distanced Christmas Eve services. We lost our in-person Easter celebrations and we don’t want to lose the coming of Christ Jesus into our lives at Christmas. We are planning to open the sanctuary, main Sunday school room, and Trinity Hall for worship space to allow people and families to worship on the most Holy night of the year together again! We will of course be recording and have available on Trinity’s website (www.trinitypottsville.com) and YouTube channel, a Christmas service (just as we have been providing since the weekend of March 21-22) for everyone and anyone who still feels safer and more comfortable worshipping at home (which is something I wholly endorse and support for anyone who still has concerns as my mindset and first priority throughout this year has always been for the safety and then worship-life for all our members).

We will be limiting and socially distancing our available seating in each of these areas of the church for each worship service. And, as we normally have well over 300 people in attendance for our 5PM Christmas Eve service, we ask you to please contact the church office (570-622-9910) to reserve seating for the 5PM Christmas Eve service as each of our services will only be able to accommodate approximately 200 people in total (80 people in the sanctuary, 60 in the main Sunday school room, and 60 in Trinity Hall). As our 7:30 and 10PM services do not approach the same numbers, reservations may not be necessary for those services.

In addition, you will find enclosed within this edition of our newsletter, our Poinsettia ordering information and Christmas tribute form. We are bringing both these items to your attention a little earlier as there are a few changes to our normal Christmas season practices this year.

First, the Poinsettias. We are planning to have two “sets” of Poinsettias this year. The first set would be ordered early and distributed to our homebound members. We will not be able to distribute these to the hospitals or nursing homes as (even without the Coronavirus pandemic) those places have long stopped accepting flowers. This set would not be placed within the church but would be distributed at some point after Thanksgiving (and early during the Advent season). Therefore, Poinsettia orders must be placed by November 20th.

The second set of Poinsettias would be delivered to us prior to our Christmas Eve services (as normal) and will be placed within the sanctuary for Christmas Eve services (although the actual orders will need to be placed at the same time as the “deliverable” set of Poinsettias).

With your Poinsettia order, please indicate if you would like to “donate” your Poinsettia to one of our homebound members, or if you would like to pick up your Poinsettia after Christmas Eve.

There is also a new addition to the Christmas Tribute memorial options; the “Rismiller Memorial Carillon Fund”. This fund has been set-up to purchase and maintain a Carillon for Trinity. Briefly, this is a piece of equipment that can play music or chimes over a speaker system that can be heard throughout the community. My home church has one and it plays every evening at 6:30 PM (timing can be pre-selected) and the sound quality is beautiful and peaceful. We are currently in the process of making all the necessary arrangements and research for the best possible unit for Trinity and our community.

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and cooperation during this time as we continue to work very hard to serve you, the members of Trinity, with the light of Christ Jesus in light of our continued circumstances!

Peace be with you all! Pastor Chris
