BBC doc-maker and journalist Louis Theroux teams up with director John Dower and double Academy Award winning producer Simon Chinn (Searching for Sugar, Man On Wire) to explore the self-mythologizing Church of Scientology. Following a long fascination with the religion and with much experience in dealing with eccentric, unpalatable and unexpected human behavior, the beguilingly unassuming Theroux won’t take no for an answer when his request to enter the Church’s headquarters is turned down. Inspired by the Church’s use of filming techniques, and aided by ex-members of the organization, Theroux uses actors to replay some incidents people claim they experienced as members in an attempt to better understand the way it operates. In a bizarre twist, it becomes clear that the Church is also making a film about Louis Theroux. Suffused with a good dose of humor and moments worthy of a Hollywood script, MY SCIENTOLOGY MOVIE is as outlandish as it is revealing.

  • Leaving New Religions
Chapter 19 Leaving New Religions Carole M. Cusack 1 Introduction Early studies of joining and leaving new religious movements (henceforth nrms) exhibited deficiencies found in research on religious conversion in general. These include a tendency to sharply distinguish the pre- and post- conversion identity of nrm members, and to view leaving as a simple process. New religions were compared to established religions, and the vocabulary used to describe nrm members differed from that used for Buddhists or Christians. Terms like “recruit” for “convert,” and “affiliation” and “disaffiliation” for “con- version” and “apostasy” showed that nrms were regarded as social movements or “cults” not “religions” (Richardson 1993: 352–354). Disaffiliation, except in cases of alleged “brainwashing” involving deprogrammers (Melton 2004: 232–235), was rarely of interest. From the 1980s the study of joining and leav- ing nrms became more nuanced; it is evident that people leave for a range of reasons. All leavers (like all joiners) are not identical; some retain faith while abandoning membership, while others abandon both. David Bromley has posited three exit roles for leavers departing organisa- tions: Defector, Whistle-blower, and Apostate (Bromley 1998a: 145). The status of each leaver depends upon the degree of tension with broader culture that the organisation manifests. The majority of leavers do not engage in public airing of grievances, loss of faith, or dispute with religious organisations, but experience departure as an “uncontested leave-taking” (Bromley 1998a: 146). Whistle-blowers and apostates have more difficult exits; they are perceived as disloyal and may be voluble critics of their former religion. Apostates may re- ceive threats and even go into hiding.

Louis Theroux is hilariously provocative in his first feature documentary, created in collaboration with director John Dower and two-time Academy Award® winning producer Simon Chinn (Searching for Sugar Man, Man on Wire). Following a long fascination with the religion, and with extensive experience dealing with eccentric human behaviour, Theroux won’t take no for an answer when his request to enter the Church of Scientology’s Los Angeles headquarters is turned down. Theroux’s insatiable curiosity motivates him to understand what life inside the Church is really like, and with the aid of former second-in-command at the Church, Mark ‘Marty’ Rathbun, he uses actors to replay incidents people claim they experienced with high profile members such as Tom Cruise and leader David Miscavige. Suffused with a good dose of humour and moments worthy of a Hollywood script, Louis Theroux: My Scientology Movie proves that what people do in the name of religion can be truly stranger than fiction. Karen is trying to use the police as a weapon, to try to intimidate me, and strong-arm me, in order to remove my videos and to stop speaking up about her. Karen and her husband are applying Scientology’s Fair Game tactics ever since I released my video series about her, in order to try to destroy me and my credibility at all costs. Just like with Scientology, Karen wants to try to frame me as a criminal, in order to ruin my credibility so people don’t believe Steve Mango and what I have to say in my video series where I exposed Karen, Independent Scientology, and the ex-Scientology cult. Hey guys and welcome back to Mangotology. If you’re new here, let me introduce myself to you. My name is Steven Mango, and I’m an ex-Scientologist that works here on YouTube to expose Scientology. If you’d like to stay up to date on all my videos, please make sure to go down below and hit that red subscribe button, and turn on your bell notifications, and you’ll get an alert whenever I release a new video exposing Scientology.
