Following a long fascination with the religion and with much experience in dealing with eccentric, unpalatable and unexpected human behavior, the beguilingly unassuming Theroux won’t take no for an answer when his request to enter the Church’s headquarters is turned down. Inspired by the Church’s use of filming techniques, and aided by ex-members of the organization, Theroux uses actors to replay some incidents people claim they experienced as members in an attempt to better understand the way it operates. In a bizarre twist, it becomes clear that the Church is also making a film about Louis Theroux. Suffused with a good dose of humor and moments worthy of a Hollywood script, MY SCIENTOLOGY MOVIE is as outlandish as it is revealing. -

Abstract: This paper is an exploratory sketch that considers how we C R might employ Jacques Lacan’s four discourses, as developed in his I seminar XVII, to analyze how the genre of non-fiction film deals with S The Documentary I its own internal limit (the film form) to document reality or adequately S disseminate knowledge. By first reading a series of documentary films alongside the master’s, university, and hysteric’s discourses (all of which & reify some social link), we then consider if the analyst’s discourse can be Form and Lacan’s C utilized by the documentarian to produce a knowledge of the unconscious; R a knowledge that can expose and potentially dissolve the social link. Preface This is a reproduction of the original 1983 publication, issued now in the interests of historical research. We have resisted the temptations of hindsight to change, or comment on, the text other than to correct spelling errors. The document therefore represents the period in which it was created, as well as the hard work of former colleagues of the BFI. Researchers will notice that the continuing debate about the definitions as to what constitutes a “British” production was topical, even then, and that criteria being considered in 1983 are still valid. Also note that the Dept of Trade registration scheme ceased in May 1985 and that the Eady Levy was abolished in the same year. Finally, please note that we have included reminders in one or two places to indicate where information could be misleading if taken for current. The publication includes commercial features either made and/or released in Britain between 1971 and 1981 and lists them alphabetically and by year of registration (where appropriate). Information given for each film includes production company, studio and/or major location, running time, director and references to trade paper production charts and Monthly Film Bulletin reviews as source of more detailed information. -

Chapter 19 Leaving New Religions Carole M. Cusack 1 Introduction Early studies of joining and leaving new religious movements (henceforth nrms) exhibited deficiencies found in research on religious conversion in general. These include a tendency to sharply distinguish the pre- and post- conversion identity of nrm members, and to view leaving as a simple process. New religions were compared to established religions, and the vocabulary used to describe nrm members differed from that used for Buddhists or Christians. Terms like “recruit” for “convert,” and “affiliation” and “disaffiliation” for “con- version” and “apostasy” showed that nrms were regarded as social movements or “cults” not “religions” (Richardson 1993: 352–354). Disaffiliation, except in cases of alleged “brainwashing” involving deprogrammers (Melton 2004: 232–235), was rarely of interest. From the 1980s the study of joining and leav- ing nrms became more nuanced; it is evident that people leave for a range of reasons. All leavers (like all joiners) are not identical; some retain faith while abandoning membership, while others abandon both. David Bromley has posited three exit roles for leavers departing organisa- tions: Defector, Whistle-blower, and Apostate (Bromley 1998a: 145). The status of each leaver depends upon the degree of tension with broader culture that the organisation manifests. The majority of leavers do not engage in public airing of grievances, loss of faith, or dispute with religious organisations, but experience departure as an “uncontested leave-taking” (Bromley 1998a: 146). Whistle-blowers and apostates have more difficult exits; they are perceived as disloyal and may be voluble critics of their former religion. Apostates may re- ceive threats and even go into hiding.
