Tuesday November 15 at 8.30Pm (AEDT) Tuesday October 25 Tuesday November 15 at 8.30pm (AEDT) “A hilariously irreverent triumph” “Louis Theroux at his very best…” Tara Watson, The Vine Leigh Paatsch, The Herald Sun Hot off its recent cinema release, Louis Theroux: My Scientology Movie will be heading to Australian TV screens next month when it premieres on BBC Knowledge. Louis Theroux is hilariously provocative in his first feature documentary, created in collaboration with director John Dower and two-time Academy Award® winning producer Simon Chinn (Searching for Sugar Man, Man on Wire). Following a long fascination with the religion, and with extensive experience dealing with eccentric human behaviour, Theroux won’t take no for an answer when his request to enter the Church of Scientology’s Los Angeles headquarters is turned down. Theroux’s insatiable curiosity motivates him to understand what life inside the Church is really like, and with the aid of former second-in-command at the Church, Mark ‘Marty’ Rathbun, he uses actors to replay incidents people claim they experienced with high profile members such as Tom Cruise and leader David Miscavige. Suffused with a good dose of humour and moments worthy of a Hollywood script, Louis Theroux: My Scientology Movie proves that what people do in the name of religion can be truly stranger than fiction. BBC doc-maker and journalist Louis Theroux teams up with director John Dower and double Academy Award winning producer Simon Chinn (Searching for Sugar, Man On Wire) to explore the self-mythologizing Church of Scientology. Following a long fascination with the religion and with much experience in dealing with eccentric, unpalatable and unexpected human behavior, the beguilingly unassuming Theroux won’t take no for an answer when his request to enter the Church’s headquarters is turned down. Inspired by the Church’s use of filming techniques, and aided by ex-members of the organization, Theroux uses actors to replay some incidents people claim they experienced as members in an attempt to better understand the way it operates. In a bizarre twist, it becomes clear that the Church is also making a film about Louis Theroux. Suffused with a good dose of humor and moments worthy of a Hollywood script, MY SCIENTOLOGY MOVIE is as outlandish as it is revealing.

  • Why Documentaries Matter Recognised As an Innovative Cultural Form
RISJ CHALLENGES CHALLENGES Documentaries have for many decades inhabited the schedules of public Why Documentaries Matter Why broadcasters. They have chronicled the lives and institutions of western democracies. In the past two decades, however, documentaries have become Why Documentaries Matter recognised as an innovative cultural form. Instead of being exclusively funded by television channels, documentaries receive money from a number of sources, including film funds, private investors and foundations. Rather than observing, documentaries are now thought capable of changing the world. Is this what they really do? How do we define a documentary? What does it mean to be the ‘author’ of a film? Nick Fraser has been editor of the BBC’s Storyville series since 1997; here he looks at the history of documentaries, showing how definitions of documentaries have changed – and how fragile is their funding. If we want good documentaries, he concludes, we have to find ways of encouraging their creators. “Nick Fraser writes about documentaries with unique authority. Not only has he made some good ’uns, he has commissioned more than practically anyone else on earth (for the BBC’s Storyville) and - as this book shows - he Nick Fraser has watched docs from their earliest days. His ideas on what the growth of the web and the decline of public service broadcasters mean for doc-makers are informed, imaginative and challenging.” Brian Lapping Chairman and Executive Producer, Brook Lapping “The rise of documentaries over the past two decades owes more to Nick Fraser than to any other single person. For so many of us who make non-fiction films, Nick’s peerless brand of tough love and mischievous curiosity have inspired us to aim higher as we try to promote greater understanding of the major events and issues of our time.” Eugene Jarecki Documentary film maker “This expert lament is beautifully written.

Your answers will help us improve The Conversation. Take the survey Academic rigour, journalistic flair Louis Theroux’s new Jimmy Savile documentary is a horrible misstep October 3, 2016 4.01pm BST Author Karen Boyle Chair in Feminist Media Studies, University of Stirling Theroux the looking glass. BBC The original BBC documentary by Louis Theroux in 2000 about Jimmy Savile, the former British TV star thought to have sexually abused at least 500 women and children, was uncomfortable viewing even before his crimes were common knowledge. Watching with the benefit of hindsight, one moment that really sticks out in When Louis Met Jimmy is when Theroux finds a notepad with his ex directory phone number on it. “There’s nothing I cannot get,” Savile tells him. Theroux revisits the moment in his new documentary, Louis Theroux: Savile. It is a statement of Savile’s power that helps us understand why his victims – a number of whom Theroux interviews in the film – found it so difficult to speak out while Savile was alive. Some are clearly still haunted by their failure to do so. Theroux mostly acts as witness to their testimonies, aware of his own complicity in the mythmaking that ensured their silence for so long. Yet as much as these victims deserve to be heard, the way their testimonies are framed is troubling. Louis Theroux: Savile is meant to be about the relationship https://theconversation.com/louistherouxsnewjimmysaviledocumentaryisahorriblemisstep66421 1/4 11/21/2016 Louis Theroux's new Jimmy Savile documentary is a horrible misstep between these two men.

Documentary discourse – both practice and theory – concerns itself with the search for an origin; an object in the real world with which the filmmaking apparatus interacts. The object is the nucleus of the documentary text. The fact that the object is taken from the historical world provides the text and its argument with immediacy and relevance. Writing on documentary focuses on the relationship forged between this object and the documentary text. The cynosure of documentary theory is an examination of the practices and processes deployed by the filmmaker in the representation of reality.
