Frente a Odontura Spinulicauda Rambur, 1838 (Orthoptera, Tettigoniidae) Eos, t. LXII, págs. 209-214 (1986). This species has been syno- nymised by FISCHER (1852, Orth. Europ.: 234) with Barbitistes glabricauda CHAR- PENTIER, 1825, but Charpentier's type, examined by FISCHER was a female larva and the synonymy appears, at least, highly doubtful, as has already been suggested REHABILITACIÓN DE «ODONTURA GLABRICAUDA» (CHARPENTIER, 1825) ... 211 by I. BOLÍVAR (1876, Sin. Orth. Esp. Port.: 229). The doubts are further in- creased by the fact that Fischer's conception of spinulicauda was based on Ram- bur's description and on a mixed series of specimens from Sardinia and Algeria ; he has definitely stated that he has not seen a female taken in Europe, so that his identification of Charpentier's female type is obviously unreliable, while his dra- wings illustrating female characters are only poor copies of Rambur's figures. Even bis figure of the male genital appendages represents some other species than spinulicauda, since in the type of the latter the cercus is distinctly curved with acute apex while Fischer's figure shows a straight cercus with an inner spine at the apex. Thus, Fischer's re-description of spinulicauda, based on a mixture of species, has to be rejected. A re-examination of the types of B. glabricauda CHAR- PENTIER made at my request by Dr. W. RAMME at the Berlin Museum, has shown that there are one male (without abdomen) and two female larvae ; this makes Charpentier's species indeterminable, and spinulicauda RAMBUR is a valid species. Brunner's descriptions of it (1878: 73 y 1882: 282) are correct and agree in every detail with Rambur's type specimens." Lectotype , Spain (I. E. E., Madrid) ; designated by UVAROV (1948: 380)". Type-species : Barbitistes glabricauda CHARPEN- TIER, by subsequent designation (KIRBY, 1906: 386) ; according to UvARoy (1948: 379) this name, based on a male without abdomen and two female nymphs, is a nomen dubium."

S. de Medeiros1 & Cassandra G. Extavour1,2* Over the course of evolution, organism size has diversified markedly. Changes in size are thought to have occurred because of developmental, morphological and/or ecological pressures. To perform phylogenetic tests of the potential effects of these pressures, here we generated a dataset of more than ten thousand descriptions of insect eggs, and combined these with genetic and life-history datasets. We show that, across eight orders of magnitude of variation in egg volume, the relationship between size and shape itself evolves, such that previously predicted global patterns of scaling do not adequately explain the diversity in egg shapes. We show that egg size is not correlated with developmental rate and that, for many insects, egg size is not correlated with adult body size. Instead, we find that the evolution of parasitoidism and aquatic oviposition help to explain the diversification in the size and shape of insect eggs. Our study suggests that where eggs are laid, rather than universal allometric constants, underlies the evolution of insect egg size and shape. Size is a fundamental factor in many biological processes. The size of an 526 families and every currently described extant hexapod order24 organism may affect interactions both with other organisms and with (Fig. 1a and Supplementary Fig. 1). Biodiversity Journal, 2020, 11 (2): 405–434 https://doi.org/10.31396/Biodiv.Jour.2020.11.2.401.434 Endemism in Italian Orthoptera Bruno Massa1 & Paolo Fontana2* 1Department Agriculture, Food and Forest Sciences, University of Palermo, Italy (retired); email: [email protected] 2Fondazione Edmund Mach, San Michele all’Adige, Italy *Corresponding author, email: [email protected] ABSTRACT The present paper discusses about the distribution of orthopterans endemic to Italy. This coun- try is located in the centre of the Mediterranean Basin and its palaeo-geographical origins are owed to complex natural phenomena, as well as to a multitude of centres-of-origin, where colonization of fauna and flora concerned. Out of 382 Orthoptera taxa (i.e., species and sub- species) known to occur in Italy, 160 (41.9%) are endemic. Most of them are restricted to the Alps, the Apennines or the two principal islands of Italy (i.e., Sardinia and Sicily). In addition, lowland areas in central-southern Italy host many endemic taxa, which probably originate from the Balkan Peninsula. In Italy, the following 8 genera are considered endemic: Sardoplatycleis, Acroneuroptila, Italopodisma, Epipodisma, Nadigella, Pseudoprumna, Chorthopodisma and Italohippus. Moreover, the subgenus Italoptila is endemic to Italy. For research regarding endemism, Orthoptera are particularly interesting because this order com- prises species characterized by different ecological traits; e.g., different dispersal abilities, contrasting thermal requirements or specific demands on their habitats. The highest percentage of apterous or micropterous (35.3%) and brachypterous (16.2%) endemic taxa live in the Apennines, which are among the most isolated mountains of the Italian Peninsula.

Chromosomes of the males of five species of Odontura, belonging to the subgenera Odontura and Odonturella, were ana- lyzed. Intensive evolution of the karyotype was recorded, both in terms of changes in the numbers of chromosomes (from 2n = 31 to 27) and the sex chromosome system (from X0 to neo-XY and X0 to neo-X1X2Y). Karyotype evolution was accompanied by tandem autosome fusions and interspecific autosomal and sex chromosome differentiation involving changes in the locations of nucleolar organizer regions, NORs, which were revealed by silver impregnation and confirmed by FISH using an 18S rDNA probe. O. (Odon- turella) aspericauda is a polytypic species with X0 and neo-X1X2Y sex determination. The latter system is not common in tettigo- niids.

  • The Biogeography of Iberian Orthopteroids'
The biogeography of iberian orthopteroids' by S. K. GANGWERE and E. MORALES AGACINO The Iberian Peninsula is of interest to biogeographers, ecologists, and systematists because of its striking zonation, isolation, and strategic location between two continents, Europe and Africa. It is remarkably diverse in its biotic communities. Not surprisingly, its orthopterous fauna is rich, cornposed in reality of severa1 distinct subfaunae. The only pre- vious discussion of them was CAZURRO(1888), whicli pioneering effort is now antiquated. Our treatrnent oi the subject, below, will be given after comment on the Peninsula itself. The Iberian Peninsula is a shield-shaped Jand mass of approxiinately 650 by 600 miles in dirnension and 229,640 square miles in area (including certain nearby insular provinces). Though its basic plan was not really completed unti1 late Tertiary times, it was actually roughed out by the end of the Niocene; thus, the land is old if not ancient. It is today compri- sed of Spain (appr~ximatel~five sixths of the total land area), Portugal (about one sixth), and the minute territory of Gibraltar. It is bounded on three sides (or about seven eighths of its total boundary) by water and on the fourth by the towering Pyrenees Mountains that effectively seal it from the remainder of Europe to the north. To the south it comes within 14 miles of Africa at the Straits of Gibraltar and within 8 112 at the point between Tarifa and Cape Cires. The Iberian cozst t3nds to be rnountainous, dropping preripitously to the water's edge, but varies according to region.

SCHMIDT † (*), ANA PAULA MArtINHO (**) and MARIA ROSA PAIVA (**) INTRODUCTION For the Iberian Peninsula, most faunistic studies of Saltatoria refer to Spanish populations. The orthopteroid fauna of Portugal is still poorly known. In the first half of the 20th century, De Seabra (1942) presented the first survey of the Portuguese Saltatoria, as well as a list of the litera- ture then available, including a study of the orthopteran species of Setúbal Peninsula (Cordeiro 1914) and a list of the species kept at the museum of the University of Coimbra, with an identification key (Aires & Me- nano 1916). Ebner (1941) reported on 40 species found at Monchique. Fernandes (1959a, 1959b, 1960) found some species new for the Por- tuguese fauna; since then, no intensive survey was carried out in Portugal. However, Harz published two valuable books entitled “The Orthoptera of Europe” (1969, 1975), in which the Orthopteroidea (Ensifera and Caelif- era) of Portugal were related to the European fauna. Schmidt & Lilge (1997) reported on the distribution of the subfamily Oedipodinae in Eu- rope and adjacent regions, discussing the orgin of some species. Ragge & Reynolds (1998) added the male songs to the morphology and distribution of the western European species, as a further species-specific character, but without checking the Portuguese populations, except for Callicrania selligera (Charpentier), syn. Platystolus (Neocallicrania) selliger (Char- pentier) (compare Pfau 1996). Furthermore, two short notes were recent- ly published on grasshoppers found in the province of Baixo Alentejo by Gonzáles Garcia (1985) and Hochkirch (1999).
