Iran, a high plateau located at latitudes in the range of 25-40 in an arid zone in the northern hemisphere of the East, is a vast country with different climatic zones. In the past, traditional builders have presented several logical climatic solutions in order to enhance human comfort. In fact, this emphasis has been one of the most important and fundamental features of Iranian architecture. To a significant extent, Iranian architecture has been based on climate, geography, available materials, and cultural beliefs. Therefore, traditional Iranian builders had to devise various techniques to enhance architectural sustainability through the use of natural materials, and they had to do so in the absence of modern technologies. Paper describes the principals and methods of vernacular architectural designs in Iran with given examples which is predominately focused on some eclectic ancient cities in Iran as Kashan, Isfahan, and Yazd. Design and technological considerations of past, such as sustainable performance of natural materials, optimum usage of available materials, and the use of wind and solar power, were studied in order to provide effective eco architectural designs to provide the architectural criteria and insights. This study will be beneficial to today architects in the design of architectural structures to provide human comfort and a sustainable life in adverse climatic conditions.

Some cities have summer weather in winter, or have spring or autumn weather; at the same time in summer you might find some regions covered with snow, icicles or experiencing rain and breeze of spring. Iran is the land of history and culture, not only because of its Pasargad and Persepolis, Chogha Zanbil, Naqsh-e Jahan Square, Yazd and Shiraz, Khuzestan and Isfahan, and its tangible heritage inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List; indeed its millennial civilization and thousands historical and archeological monuments and sites demonstrate variety and value of religious and spiritual heritage, rituals, intact traditions of this country as a sign of authenticity and splendor. Today we have inherited the knowledge and science from scientists, scholars and elites such as Hafez, Saadi Shirazi, Omar Khayyam, Ibn Khaldun, Farabi, IRAN The Land of Glory and Beauties Ibn Sina (Avicenna), Ferdowsi and Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi. Iran is the land of souvenirs with a lot of Bazars and traditional markets.

    Fazel Khakbaz Tehran, 2014 the monument, its images and histories Niloofar Kakhi Visiting Research Fellow, University of St Andrews, Institute of Iranian Studies, Niloofar, [email protected] Architectural representations of national identities are often monumental buildings that similar to the national ideologies they support are essentially ‘constructed from above’. These monuments are constructed by the states in order to represent the official understanding of nationalism to the public. In 1971 and on the occasion of the celebration of the 2500th Anniversary of Persian Empire, a memorial building –Shahyad e Aryamehr– was erected in Tehran. Yet, Shahayad with its specifically calculated design and most carefully selected visual references, hardly managed to represent the event or the idea of a glorious past for that matter. Far from the idea of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, the king of Iran at the time, the monument constantly managed to represent the ‘present’ conditions of the country, and since its erection in Tehran, it has constantly been associated with a variety of often contradictory ideas: frustration vs. hope, freedom vs. constraint and revolution vs. stability. All these meaning has been associated with Shahyad in different episodes of modern history of Iran until today. This history could not have been narrated through Shahyad’s architecture and the visual appearance of the building, but only through its photographs. As part of an ongoing research, this paper will focus on how the photographs taken from a monumental building can represent a far more sophisticated and detailed historical narrative than the architecture of the building itself. It will analyse the photographs of Shahyad, published in the leading press as the representative of the most critical episodes of modern history of Iran until today and unfolds how the meanings that Shahyad was associated to, has changed during the last 45 years.
