The biological diversity on these islands is unknown and so a rapid assessment was conducted in January 2014 as part as a region wide assessment to determine the butterfly diversity on two of these islands, Biobio and Agbasiagba. Diversity indices were computed for both islands using the Shannon-Weiner index, Margalef’s index for richness and Whittaker’s index for comparison of diversity between the two islands. A total of eight hundred and eighty-one (881) individual butterflies representing forty-five (45) species belonging to eight (8) families were recorded during the study. Thirty-nine (39) species of butterflies were recorded on Biobio island whiles twenty-eight (28) species were recorded on Agbasiagba. This was expected as the larger islands are expected to support more species than smaller ones, with Biobio island being relatively bigger than Agbasiagba. The shared species of butterflies on both islands were twenty-two (22) representing 48.9% of the total species accumulated. Indicator species like Junonia oenone, Danaus chrysippus and Papilio demodocus were also recorded indicating the degraded floral quality of the Islands. -

The original description of almost every name in this catalogue has been examined for the correct reference, and where the sex or habitat was wrongly quoted, the necessary correction has been made. -

Bivar de Sousa 2 Keywords: Lepidoptera, Cape Verde Islands, distribution, new data ABSTRACT Butterflies of the superfamilies Hesperioidea and Papilionoidea collected in the Cape Verde Islands and deposited in the Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical, Lisbon, Portugal, were studied. Some novelties are reported at the insular level and one Palearctic species of Nymphalidae is reported for the first time in the islands. The identification of the only species of Colias (Pieridae) present in the Cape Verde Islands and its biogeographical affinities are discussed. RESUMO Este artigo apresenta resultados de um estudo de amostras de lepidópteros das superfamílias Hesperioidea e Papilionoidea, provenientes de ilhas de Cabo Verde e em depósito no Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical, Lisboa, Portugal. [Read 7th November, 1895.1 ONE of the first genera which 1 ever otudieil, and the Erst which I monographed, was the geiius Charaxes, a paper ou which I published in 1865 in the ' Proceedings ot the Zoological Society,' in which I recorded sixty-eight species (two of which, however, were noted as doubtful and ere subsequently suppremed) : the present paper enumerates no fewer than one hundred and fifty- nine. I have followed Prof. Aurivillius in uuiting Palla to Cliaraxes : if kept separate, it would have to be broken up into several geucra, and Charaxes ithelf would in like inanuer have to be sub- divided ; tliis, indeed, has been done for the Iiidian species by Mr. Moore ; but apart from outline of wing 1have been unable to discover any constant structural characters ou which to base these genera. FINAL REPORT Biodiversity assessment, and strategic conservation planning, for the riparian forests of the Spiny Forest Ecoregion of Madagascar. By: Alison Cameron (PhD student, Leeds University, UK) and Maminarina Dutel Ravoninjatovo (DEA student, University of Tulear, Madagascar) Introduction Madagascar has been called the highest biodiversity priority in the world but biodiversity conservation priorities within Madagascar are only now being identified. Recent research, biodiversity planning and conservation action have focused on east coast rainforest areas, while other areas of potentially very high biological interest have largely been ignored. The WWF Spiney Forests Ecoregion action plan indicates that West coast dry forests and riparian forests are under-represented in Madagascar’s reserve system, and are being degraded and fragmented at very high rates. This project is therefore addressing deficiencies in biodiversity data for this region in collaboration with The University of Tulear, WWF, and Frontier. Project Aims and Objectives To provide an opportunity for transfer of entomological survey skills from Alison Cameron (PhD student) to a Malagasy DEA student (Maminarina Dutel Ravoninjatovo). To provide the DEA student with experience of project decision making processes and meeting project by providing opportunities to integrate with project teams from WWF (World Wide Fund For Nature) and Frontier Madagascar. The production of a DEA thesis, co-supervised by the University of Tulear and WWF staff in Tulear. To make field survey data publically available through the national biodiversity data base, known as the “Platforme D’Analyse” (PDA)*. Training Initial training was conducted in Beza Mahafaly Special Reserve, between the 29th - 31st Oct 2002. Alison spent 3 days in the field training Dutel (Photo 1 right) and also Edidy (Photo 1, left) who runs the small natural history museum at Beza Mahafaly. -

PART 3. BUTTERFLIES OF THE CHYULU RANGE. A systematic list of the species taken by the Museum Expedition to the Hills. April-July, 1938. By V. G. L. VAN SOMEREN,F.L.S., F.R.E.S., Etc. INTRODUCTION. The following account of the Lepidoptera (Rhopaloc.era) taken by members of the Museum Expedition to the Chyulu Range, is mainly a systematic list of the species obtained. At the time of the visit, April to July, 1938 (that is just toward the end, and after the long rains) insect life was remark• ably scarce, and although systematic search was made over all portions of the hills from 3,000 to 7,000 feet, at no time were butterflies numerous. The material taken can be considered representative of the range for that particular season, but there is little doubt that insect life would be more plentiful just after the short rains, as it undoubtedly is on the surrounding plains, especially in the Kibwezi- Voi areas. In spite of the paucity of insect life, certain new records have been established, thus Papilio hornimani is recorded for the first time from within Kenya boundaries, although known for many years to inhabit the forests of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Charaxes ful• vescens nr. acuminatus, also of Tanganyika, was taken on the range. Two new races of Liptenines of the genus Pentila are recorded, whilst a new ACTaea,a new Papilio, and a new race of Amauris are described. The Lepidoptera collected have a definite relationship to the vegetational zones and the distribution of certain plant species at various altitudes and portions of the hills. -

DE FREINA eingegangen am 6.VI.2011 Zusammenfassung: Die Arbeit liefert eine kommentierte Auflistung der im Februar 2003 vom Verfasser auf Mauritius nachgewie- senen Lepidoptera-Arten, ergänzt durch bekannte und neue Daten über deren Biologien. Der Autor konnte Arten wie Danaus ple- xippus (LINNAEUS , 1758), Chilades pandava (HORSFIE L D , [1829]) und Leptomyrina phidias (FABRICIUS, 1793) beobachten, die, erst seit zwei Jahrzehnten als neu für die Inselfauna gemeldet, inzwischen auf der gesamten Insel heimisch zu sein scheinen. Ein Nachweis für Cacyreus darius MABI ll E , 1877, die seit rund 40 Jahren nicht mehr festgestellt wurde, belegt, daß die Art nicht wie angenommen ausgestorben ist. Schließlich wird die Lepidopterenliste von Mauritius durch den Erstnachweis einer bisher unbekannten Art der Gattung Hyblaea FABRICIUS, 1793 (Hyblaeidae) ergänzt. Abstract: A survey of Lepidoptera, collected by the author on Mauritius in Februar 2003, is listed with some comments. The present paper also reviews current knowledge of Mauritian Lepidoptera bionomic details. The author observed some Mauritian species like Danaus plexippus (LINNAEUS , 1758), Chilades pandava (HORSFIE L D , [1829]), and Leptomyrina phidias (FABRICIUS, 1793), which are recently reported since the last twenty years and which seem now well-established throughout the island. The recent proof of Cacyreus darius MABI ll E , 1877, not seen or taken during the last fourty years and assumed to be extinct, indicates that this spe- cies is still present in the island.
