Free-to-play games are widely played on mobile devices and endless runner mobile games, a type of game genre has been in the game industry since 2009. Endless runner games allow players to play endlessly while the game mechanic progressively becomes difficult. While such free-to-play business models aim to incentivize player retention, to date retaining players in a game for a long time remains challenging. This study investigates the use of textual feedback as a possible enhancer of player retention. I study textual feedback in free-to-play games under three different conditions, namely high-positive, ​ ​ low-positive, and no-textual-feedback. A study with 20 participants revealed that high-positive ​ ​ ​ textual feedback impact player retention in free-to-play endless runner games, while low-positive has no impact. I conclude by discussing what the results mean to player retention and provide design recommendations for designers of free-to-play mobile games.

Power managers of modern operating systems reduce the processor's power consumption by scaling the processing frequency and voltage merely based on the processor's current utilization and without considering the requirements of running applications. Since high frame rates are commonly attributed to a good gam- ing experience, most games process as many frames as possible resulting in a high system utilization. Traditional power managers in turn select constantly high processing frequen- cies resulting in a high power consumption. It remains to be seen whether a new operating system or new devices will affect the types of apps we download. But a new report from app-tracking firm App Annie shows that our habits on our iOS devices haven’t changed much over the years. Facebook—first released in 2008—is the most downloaded app in the world of all time, and Candy Crush Saga, which debuted November 2012, is the most downloaded game ever. According to App Annie, which tracks the app stores in each country daily, US iPhone users have downloaded the top 10 apps of all time the most. The US dominated revenue earned for game downloads as well, apart from two games— Puzzle & Dragon and Monster Strike —where the Japanese spent the most. App Annie also said Apple’s Pages app is the only app on the list that doesn’t have a free version or in-app purchases (meaning it made all its revenue from people buying the app). Facebook-owned apps accounted for 40% of the most downloaded apps, a week after the company announced 1 billion people accessed the social network in a single day. Facebook also happens to be the only app in the top downloads chart that’s lasted since the initial launch of the App Store in 2008.
