Br«f quotations from this document are allowable without special permission, provided that accurate acknowledgment of source is made. Requests for permission for extended quotation from or reproduction of this manuscript in whole or in part may be granted by the copyright holder. SIGNED 4 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The author gratefully acknowledges the active support and involvement of Mr. John de Lancie, Principal Oboe Emeritus of the Philadelphia Orchestra, during the completion of this document. His generous spirit and incomparable attention to detail throughout many hours of interviews and the editing of this document have greatly enriched its content. Mr. de Lancie also participated in a series of events at the University of Arizona organized by Dr. Neil Tatman, Professor of Oboe at the University of Arizona, in conjunction with the presentation of this document during the author's lecture recital. On 26 February 2001, Mr. de Lancie attended the dress rehearsal for the performance of his version of Richard Strauss's Concerto for Oboe and Small Orchestra and shared detailed insight into the work with members of the orchestra. The following day, he conducted a morning master class followed by an afternoon discussion entitled, "The American Symphonic Oboist" attended by a large international audience of oboists and fans of Mr. de Lancie. That evening, Mr. de Lancie also shared closing remarks at the author's lecture recital that featured a full orchestral performance of Strauss's Concerto for Oboe and Small Orchestra with the de Lancie revisions. Mr. de Lancie's enthusiasm and gracious attitude were greatly appreciated throughout all of the events associated with the writing and presentation of this document. The author is also profoundly grateful for the mentoring of Dr. Neil Tatman. His discovery of an early (1946) copy of the piano reduction to Strauss's Oboe Concerto, wUch he found in a recent acquisition of used oboe music, gave further depth to this project. From the fffst phone call to Mr. de Lancie to the hosting of an event on the University of Arizona campus featuring Mr. de I^ancie, Dr. Tatman accommodated countless hours of discussion, revising, and editing with great enthusiasm. The author also expresses deep gratitude for the support of Dr. Tatman's wife, Mutsuko Tatman, who allowed many intrusions on fjunily life during the course of this project. Her warmth and perspective were greatly appreciated at many work sessions. In additk>n, the author appreciates the artistic and editorial assistance given by the following family members and colleagues: Earl and Sharon Calkins, Jean and Walter Maxwell, Peter W. Cooper, and Dr. Michael L. Miller. Appreciation is also offered for the exceptional and time-consuming work of Randi Weinstein, who transformed the musical graphs found in Chapter Four from rough pencil drawings to clear computer generated graphs, and Jacquelyn Sellers, who achieved the same efifect with many of the musical examples. A special acknowledgement is offered to the author's friends and colleagues, as well as conductor Dr. Thomas CockreU, for their beautiiiil performance of Strauss's Concerto for Oboe and Small Orchestra given 27 February 2001 at The University of Arizona. The author is extremely grateful for their overwhelming support during the completion of both the lecture recital and this document. 5 Dedicated with love and gratitude to my parents, Linda A. and Bruce L. • Open Farrand - Under Wagner S Shadow.Pdf
The Pennsylvania State University The Graduate School UNDER WAGNER’S SHADOW: DELIUS’S USE OF WAGNERIAN MODELS IN THE MAGIC FOUNTAIN A Thesis in Music Theory and History by Timothy M. Farrand © 2020 Timothy M. Farrand Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts December 2020 ii The thesis of Timothy M. Farrand was reviewed and approved by the following: Charles Youmans Professor of Music Thesis Advisor Eric McKee Professor of Music David Frego Director of the School of Music iii ABSTRACT After 1900, Frederick Delius’s unique compositional style bears little resemblance to any singular influence. In the thirty-eight year apprentice period that led to the development of this style, Delius drew upon a wide range of references from the Norwegian mountains, to the “Negro” spirituals sung by former slaves in Florida, to the dramatic style of Richard Wagner. Studies have been written detailing the impact that his two years spent in Florida had on Delius as well as the twenty visits that he made to Norway throughout his life, ten of which occurred during his apprentice period. Several scholars have pointed out the similarities between Delius’s early harmonic language and that of Richard Wagner but there has not been a study showing the importance of Wagner’s influence upon the development of Delius’s dramatic style. In the creation of his second opera The Magic Fountain (1894-95), Delius used the operatic works of Richard Wagner, specifically Tristan und Isolde and Parsifal, as musical, dramatic, and philosophical models. The use of Wagner’s works as a model for The Magic Fountain allowed Delius to discover his own artistic voice, which he continued to refine until it was fully formed in 1900.

  • Der Auftakt 1920-1938
Der Auftakt 1920-1938 The Prague music journal Der Auftakt [The upbeat. AUF. Subtitle: “Musikblätter für die tschechoslowakische Republik;” from volume seven, issue two “Moderne Musikblätter”]1 appeared from December 1920 to April 1938.2 According to Felix Adler (1876-1928), music critic for the Prague journal Bohemia and editor of the first eight issues of AUF,3 the journal was formed out of the Musiklehrerzeitung [Journal for music teachers] (1913-16, organ of the Deutscher Musikpädagogischer Verband [German association for music pedagogy] in Prague) and was to be a general music journal with a modern outlook and with a concern for the interests of music pedagogues.4 Under its next editor, Erich Steinhard, AUF soon developed into one of the leading German-language modern music journals of the time and became the center of Czech-German musical collaboration in the Czechoslovakian Republic between the wars.5 Adolf Weißmann, eminent music critic from Berlin, writes: “Among the journals that avoid all distortions of perspective, the Auftakt stands at the front. It has gained international importance through the weight of its varied contributions and the clarity of mind of its main editor.”6 The journal stopped publication without prior announcement in the middle of volume eighteen, likely a result of the growing influence of Nazi Germany.7 AUF was published at first by Johann Hoffmanns Witwe, Prague, then, starting with the third volume in 1923, by the Auftaktverlag, a direct venture of the Musikpädagogischer Verband.8 The journal was introduced as a bimonthly publication, but except for the first volume appearing in twenty issues from December 1920 to the end of 1921, all volumes contain twelve monthly issues, many of them combined into double issues.9 The issues are undated, but a line with the date for the “Redaktionsschluss” [copy deadline], separating the edited content from the 1 Subtitles as given on the first paginated page of every issue.

  • Einige Österreichische Flüchtlinge in Großbritannien
1. Schriftsteller, Journalisten, Übersetzer und Verleger 2. Maler, Grafiker, Plastiker und Architekten 3. Komponisten, Musiker,

After an analysis of journal articles (N =935) from The Double Reed, results indicated historical articles, interviews, and composition-related articles were the most prominent categories. There was a fairly even dispersion between oboe and bassoon articles, while the majority of published material was generated from American authors. Additional trends are noted to inform and advance the double reed community.
