Ibeje There are many land uses applied at Ikeduru L.G.A. in Imo State, Department of Civil Nigeria, thus, the area is selected as a case study. The objective of Engineering, Imo State University, P.M.B. 2000, study is to determine the effects of land use on infiltration by three Owerri, Nigeria. different land use types; 34 of them are in farmlands, 34 in Bamboo field and 32 in forestlands. Within each land use type, multiple regression are used to determine degree of association between the rates of infiltration, moisture content, porosity, bulk density and particle sizes. Non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis analysis of variance is used to determine whether significant differences in infiltration rates existed between different land uses. The mean steady state infiltration rate of farmlands, bamboo fields and forestland are 1.98 cm/h, 2.44cm/h and 2.43cm/h respectively. The regression model shows that infiltration rate decreases with increase in moisture content and bulk density but increases with the increase of soil particle sizes and porosity. -

Research Article DETERMINATION OF THE ERODIBILITY STATUS OF SOME SOILS IN IKEDURU LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF IMO STATE, NIGERIA Chukwuocha N., *Amangabara G.T., and Amaechi C. 1Department of Environmental Technology, Federal University of Technology, PMB 1526 Owerri *Author for Correspondence ABSTRACT Determination of soil erodibility status in four selected communities of Ikeduru LGA was conducted. Soil samples were collected randomly from Cassava farm, Bamboo field, Fallow land and sparse grassland and were analysed for moisture content, particle size distribution, textural class, organic matter content, permeability and aggregate structure using oven drying method, sieve analysis, triangular chart, and permeability/soil type table. Laboratory results were subjected to statistical analyses. Narrow variation was seen in all the particle size distribution (ranged from 25.10 – 35.15) with samples from sparse grass land vegetation having the least value (35.20), samples from cassava farm and bamboo field had their values as 35.15 and 29.40 respectively. The clay, silt and MC had a negative non-significant relationship with the erodibility status with values of correlation -.412, -.532 and -.836 respectively. While sand percentage content had a positive non significant relationship with erodibility factor K having the values of .670. OMC percentage content had a high positive significant relationship with erodibility factor K, with the value of correlation as 1.000**. There was a high level of significance between clay, silt, sand, OMC, and MC with values of correlation as -.753**, -.714**, -.831**, and .955** respectively. -

The overall objective of the Niger Delta Support Programme (NDSP) is to mitigate the conflict in the Niger Delta by addressing the main causes of the unrest and violence: bad governance, (youth) unemployment, poor delivery of basic services. A key focus of the programme will be to contribute to poverty alleviation through the development and support given to local community development initiatives. The NDSP4 aims to support institutional reforms and capacity building, resulting in Local Gov- ernment and State Authorities increasingly providing infrastructural services, income gener- ating options, sustainable livelihoods development, gender equity and community empow- erment. ABSTRACT: This study appraises the spatial problems and prospects of fertilizer use in agriculture on the Environment in Mbieri, Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State. Structured questionnaires were sampled in the each villages randomly selected from the seven autonomous communities of Amaike-Mbieri, Awo Mbieri, Ezi-Mbieri, Ihitte Isi-Mbieri, Obazu Mbieri, Obi-Mbieri and Umueze-Mbieri for collection of data. The data were analysed using descriptive statistical tools of tables, charts and graphs. The outcome showed that 71.2% of the farmers do not have University Education. All the kinds of fertilizer in use in the study area contain Nitrogen with NPK 20-10-10 the most sought-after (35%). The major source of fertilizer in the study area is the open market while 54% of the farmers say they prefer the application of fertilizer NPK for replenishing lost soil nutrients. Finally, 60% of the Farmers in the study area use surface broadcast method in application of fertilizer NPK on their farms. However, some of this nitrogen compounds are washed down through surface runoffs causing pollution and eutrophication of the Ecosystems and water bodies. -

Igbokwe2 1Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics, Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Nigeria 2Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Nigeria Abstract Catchment delineation and characterization are gaining increasing global attention as scientists seek better understanding of how runoff interacts with the landscape in the face of increasing flood devastations across the globe. All surface water flow systems occur in units of sub-catchments, the basic unit of landscape that drains its runoff through the same outlet to contribute to the main stream of the overall catchment. The delineation and characterization of sub-catchments would provide some basic data required for flood prediction, drainage design, water quality studies, erosion data, and sediment transport among others. In this study, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) were used to create a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of Owerri, South East Nigeria. The DEM was validated using Global Navigational Satellite Systems (GNSS) surveys. The DEM was processed through a number of steps in GIS to determine drainage routes with a minimum accumulation threshold. All cells that contribute into each stream were dissolved into a single unit of sub-catchment polygon and delineated. Characteristics of the sub-catchments including the average slope, the longest flow distance, the area and the centroid coordinates required for input in the Storm Water Management Model of the Environmental Protection Agency of U.S.A. -

N1 --- Chibo Christian N2 1,2Department of Geography and Environmental Management, Imo State University, Owerri ABSTRACT The menace of flooding ravaging different areas of Imo state Nigeria has been a recurrent phenomenon in recent years. This research investigated the socio-economic implications of flooding for sustainable development of the state. The paper aimed at investigating, identifying and documenting the socioeconomic implications of flooding to sustainable development of Imo state. The study tried to identify various locations affected by flooding and also examined the positive and negative effects of flood to the area. 500 copies of questionnaires were distributed using systematic sampling in six local government areas of the state used for pilot survey. About 96.8 percent of the questionnaires was retrieved and used for the study. Collected data were presented using frequency tables, charts and percentages. The study identified various locations affected by flooding, years of severe flooding and also identified various effects of flooding in the state. Finally the paper concluded by making recommendations which includes discouraging development of areas prone to flooding among others. Soil samples were collected from 12 locations across three regions of Imo State (Owerri, Okigwe and Orlu), using completely randomized design. Samples were analysed for erodibility indices: modified clay ratio (MCR), clay ratio (CR), dispersion ratio (DR), and erosion ratio (ER), alongside selected physicochemical properties. Results indicated that the soils are predominantly sand. Soils of Owerri region are loamy sand texture, while Okigwe and Orlu regions are Sandy loam and Sand textured respectively. Bulk density of soils ranged from 1.50Mg/m3 1.81Mg/m3, while soil organic matter (SOM) averages 2.27% for Owerri and Orlu, and 0.92% for Okigwe respectively. MCR varied across the various locations in the order of Orlu (65.23 80.01) > Okigwe (43.11 55.30) > Owerri (15.20 35.65) regions. Least DR (0.58) and ER (0.44) were recorded in Owerri region, while highest values of 0.99 and 0.91 were recorded in Orlu region. A simulated rainfall intensity of 165mm/hr resulted in 1.2 ton/ha and 6.6 ton/ha annual soil loss for Owerri and Orlu respectively. -
