I begin this address with a brief overview about Mbaitoli. As the name implies, it is made up Officers: of nine towns: Afara, Eziama-Obiato, Ogbaku, Ogwa, Orodo, Ifakala, Mbieri, Ubomiri and Umunoha. It is located in the center of Imo State and is a part of Owerri capital territory. Today, Boston is more Martin Dimunah remarkable as we host Mbaitoli USA convention; this breakthrough. makes me feel fulfilled. I must (President) Boston, Massachusetts begin by thanking the men and women who worked tirelessly to make it a success especially the entire 617 -721-9880 executive and board members. Nigeria Centre for Disease Control Protecting the health of Nigerians Cholera hotspots mapping in Nigeria Iliya Cheshi - NCDC [email protected] Profile: Nigeria • Nigeria is a federal republic comprising 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja • Inhabited by more than 250 ethnic groups with over 500 distinct languages • Nigeria is divided roughly in half between Christians and Muslims 195.9 million (2018) Census 2 NIGERIA CENTRE FOR DISEASE CONTROL Introduction • Cholera remains a global public health problem, disproportionately affecting the tropical and sub-tropical areas of the world, where focal areas or hotspots play a key role in perpetuating the disease transmission • Targeting these hotspots with proven interventions e.g. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH), as well as Oral Cholera Vaccines (OCV) could reduce the mean annual incidence of the entire sub-Saharan African region by half (Lessler et al) • The Global Task Force on Cholera Control (GTFCC) has thus advocated for a comprehensive cholera control strategy where the use of OCV plays a complementary role to other preventive interventions, chiefly, ensuring access to WaSH 3 NIGERIA CENTRE FOR DISEASE CONTROL • To align its cholera control strategies with the global road map of the GTFCC, the team at the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) released a document detailing their preparedness and response plans • Assessing cholera transmission dynamics in Nigeria and identifying cholera hotspots were outlined as immediate-term goals. This help to design and implement relevant long term and cost effective solutions to achieve the ultimate goal of cholera elimination 4 NIGERIA CENTRE FOR DISEASE CONTROL Cholera hotspot mapping in Nigeria “Cholera hotspot” is defined as a geographically limited area (e.g.

  • COLONIALISM, URBANISATION and the GROWTH of ONITSHA, 1857-1960 *Mmesoma N
COLONIALISM, URBANISATION AND THE GROWTH OF ONITSHA, 1857-1960 *Mmesoma N. Umeagudosi and Amarachi C. Obidiaju Abstract There is no gainsaying that colonialism changed the patterns of urbanisation in Africa. What this means is that there were existing patterns of urbanisation in most African communities before colonial incursions and these have inspired scholarly researches of various depth and volumes. Considering an identified problem in African historiography, which tends to give minimal attention to the exigencies that led to changes in patterns of urbanisation in particular African communities, this paper adopts the historical research method, with effective use of primary, secondary and tertiary sources of data that were subjected to qualitative interpretation, to document and analyse the processes of urbanisation in Africa since colonial incursion, with the commercial city of Onitsha as a study area. The study observes that urbanisation in Onitsha was not necessarily an impact of colonialism. Instead, the colonial administration only effected changes on the pattern of urbanisation in the city. Such changes were precipitated by the colonial economic policies, which among other things, used the inland waterways as effective transport facility for primary produce extracted from the various produce centres around the Niger River. However, other factors of change encouraged rapid urbanisation of Onitsha during colonialism in Nigeria. A conspicuous factor is colonial administrative measures, which saw to the establishment of Onitsha

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Research Papers in Economics Alabi M. O. URBAN SPRAWL, PATTERN AND MEASUREMENT IN LOKOJA, NIGERIA URBAN SPRAWL, PATTERN AND MEASUREMENT IN LOKOJA, NIGERIA Michael Oloyede ALABI Department of Geography and Planning, Kogi State University P.M. B. 1008, Anyigba, Nigeria ement [email protected] Abstract Lokoja have been experiencing a large influx of population from its surrounding regions, which had led to rapid growth and expansion that had left profound changes on the landscape in terms of land use and land cover. This study uses the GIS techniques and the application of Shannon’s entropy theory to measure the behavior of sprawl which is based on the notion that landscape entropy or disorganization increases with sprawl, analysis was carried out based on the integration of remote sensing and GIS, the measurement of entropy is devised based on the town location factors, distance from roads, to reveal and capture spatial patterns of urban sprawl. Then Entropy value for each zone revealed a high value, especially areas outside the core city area; like Felele, with the entropy of 0.3, Adankolo, 0.2 and Lokongoma, 0.2. These areas are evenly dispersed settlement, as one move away from the city core. Study shows a correlation of population densities and entropy values of 1987 and 2007, for areas like Felele ,Adankolo, and Lokongoma , which is indicative of spread over space , an evidence of sprawl. But as we go down the table the entropy values seem to tend towards zero.

The results of the interpreted VES data suggest that the layering in the region range from three to five layers. The geologic sections derived from the analyzed geoelectric section suggest that the alluvial deposits of sand, sandy clay, medium to coarse sandstones, as well as the weathered and fractured basement constitute the aquifer found in this sedimentary region. Furthermore the results of the interpretation of the VES data indicate that the thickness values of the aquifer vary from 6.01 m to 58.60 m. The geoelectric section generated also suggest that the resistivity values of the aquifer components range from 4.2 Ω-m to 106.7 Ω- m for the alluvial deposits; 33.7 Ω-m to 108.6 Ω-m (weathered basement); and 345.7 Ω-m to 564.0 Ω-m for the fractured basement rocks.
